Ed Reed released by Texans ... signs with Jets

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

The more I think about it, the more I think Ed Reed is a bad fit:

  • He was a below average safety last year and horrible this year.
  • He is a locker room lawyer. He campaigned against Harbaugh in Baltimore. Called out Wade Phillips publicly in Houston. Not a leader.
  • He is redundant since he plays McCourty's position and not Gregory's. Gregory is better than him, but injured. McCourty is worlds better than him.
  • He will likely be a problem unless the Pats make him a starter (he just shot his way out of town in Houston because of that reason).

Ed Reed is no longer Ed Reed that we remember. He might be a good 10-20 snaps a game type of player, but he refuses to accept that is his skill level anymore. I think the Pats should pass on him. And early indication is they will.

Quote from Reed:

“I’m not perfect and I know I am held to a higher standard because of what I’ve done in the past but that was the past and I am a totally different player now,” said Reed. “But, even when I did go out there, the ball didn’t come my way, but that’s neither here nor there.”

If nothing else, he's acknowledged that he isn't the player that he used to be. He's been pretty frank about it.

So basically he made ~$400,000 a tackle this season.

Oof.

Is he? Does he admit that he is no longer a starting quality safety or does he still think he is a very good starting safety and just not an All World safety? There is a lot of ground between the safety he was at the height of his career and the player he is today.

Admitting that he is no longer the Ed Reed of four or five years ago doesn't mean he has come to grips with the reality of the player he is today.

Per @JasonLaCanfora, Ed Reed is being courted by the #Patriots and #Jets. Retirement is a possibility. #NFL

I knew Rexie would do everything in his power to keep Edward out of a Patriots uniform. No surprise there at all. But don't read anything into BBs reported lack of interest.

Lack of Patriots interest at this point equates to BB and Reed dining out in Boston as we speak.

I read on some twitter feeds that Ed Reed was spotted at Logan Airport in Boston.

The Patriots have not shown any early interest in Ed Reed, I'm told. At this point, not sure if there will be

To me, Jets make most sense as an Ed Reed landing spot. Knows the scheme, Rex & need help there. But Idzik's call

I continue to hear Rex Ryan is very intrigued by adding Ed Reed, his former player, and Bill Belichick has long championed Reed's skills...

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

If a contending team is willing to give him a shot, I don't see why he'd retire -- he's already done the work of staying in shape, might as well continue to make use of it.
If he wanted to go out on top, he could've retired in the offseason.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

It seems to me that Ed Reed would be a great dime package pickup at the right price. McCourty, Gregory and Reed backing up Talib, Arrington and Dennard is an excellent defensive backfield. Reed should be able to handle a tight end or RB spread out wide a few snaps per game.

He's not the centerfield, read-and-react guy he was when he was younger. But that's okay. McCourty excels at that. Give Reed 10-12 plays per half on clear passing downs, keep his legs fresh, and have him work with Tavon and the Rutgers kids for the second half of the season. This has the feel of a Junior Seau fit for Belichick and the Patriots.

It struck me that the Texans brought him in as this big stopper after the Patriots torched them twice last season, and as a big defensive leader. He isn't needed to carry that sort of pressure here (amazing to even write that after the years of a revolving secondary door.)

I'd love to see Decker, Welker and Thomas matched up with the CBs with Reed, Gregory and McCourty behind them reading the Forehead's histrionic flapping and gimping crap out of the shotgun.

If Reed is a sane human being:

Pats (50%), Jets(0%), or retire (50%).

I'd be very surprised if Reed chose to make his finale and go out as a Jet. I also doubt Reed would sign with the Jets just because Ryan would stroke his shaft. You can argue the latter about BB as well, but at least the Pats are a contending team, while the Jets are.... well.... - the Jets...

Ed Reed released by Texans

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

My guess is Reed goes where the most $$$ is offered.

We have the cash, but, is there anything left in his legs (and hip)??

Seems to me that for red zone alone (where the need for speed is no acute) and his knowledge he would be a huge benefit. However, I am sure NE is all over this and will sign him if there is a good chance that he can still contribute.

If we do sign him, I would feel really good about it.
