Curran: "In my estimation... [Gonzo would like to] be treated as if he's at the table in 2027." [previous title: "say goodbye to gonzo"]

If true, it's $750k per year more than Witherspoon.

$1m more guaranteed.

Now we wait for the signing bonus.

Effectively, it's the same exact deal that Witherspoon got.

I never thought the Patriot punditry would be right that they should have done a bigtime deal with him last spring, but if this is true, in the end they were right. Witherspoon's deal forced the Patriots into a corner.

Always give your player the deal immediately if you want to sign him because it'll cost you.

Now up to Gonzo to ball out which I expect he will
Good news before the year starts elite CBs dont grow on trees

Just for my understanding: Is this an extension? So he plays the next two years on his current deal (plus 5th year option) and the new contract starts in 2028 or does this contract start now?

It's ****ing pathetic. The Krafts are genuinely shameless. I hope they're roasted the entire broadcast on Wednesday for being cheap.

And there it is. WRONG AGAIN. It's like watching a 3 year old have temper tantrum after temper tantrum simply because they didn't get what they wanted fast enough. At least you can take solace in the fact that your streak of stupidity is fully intact, and it's very doubtful you will ever break it, as stupid very rarely has a moment of clarity.

Yes, the current deal but with a signing bonus up front and guaranteed money.

Wonder if Vrabel's involvement in these negotiations helped seal this deal?
Without regard glad to see that this is taken care of before the season.
Interestingly it is currently 2:09 AM and the Globe just reported this 3 minutes ago, someone burned the midnight oil to resolve this.

Shut up you insufferable slug. The is the idiocy of the troll NE fans who can't be happy it got done and have to add some misery because you are never happy unless you complain. You have no idea if the Pats were backed into a corner or who caved. Maybe they just both met in the middle. You were just spouting off something about $38 million per and trade him. Seriously, its just embarrassing to be on the same forum with people like you. frikin clown show.

Good, can we move the fk on now?
Not until we trade him because he’s got character issues.

I fully expect another forty or fifty pages of heated discussion by game time, bemoaning the price, the terms (I’ll start: why not five years?), the fact that he wasn’t traded for being such a difficult player, and of course how cheap Bob Kraft is for giving him such a pittance.

SMH.

It’s 11:00 PM in Seattle.

Does anybody know where his agent is based? Think he might be visiting Seattle to watch two of his highest paid clients play?

I had to watch Jaws and Saturday Night Fever to make this happen... I'm sticking to it!

SMH @ folks thinking Gonzo was going to accept a deal last Spring.

He knew a deal last Spring would be less, so not accepting it would be putting more money in his pocket eventually.

It takes both sides to make a deal.

Why is this concept so hard?

Sign this deal after the Super Bowl, it's like 10-15 million less overall, here we are.

Depending on the structure, this will be a bargain at the end.

Do you really think Gonzo and his agent don’t know that?

If they sign it then they just left $10 - $15 million on the table instead of in Gonzo’s pocket.

Yet you and some other posters keep thinking all Bob Kraft has to do is snap his cheap fingers and Gonzo’s going to sign and give up that money.

Question for you all, if you were in Gonzo’s place would you give away that $15million?

BB and P Carroll both explicitly said that RK is cheap. In a court of law, BB and Pete would be considered expert witnesses because they are experts in their field and knew the inner workings behind the scenes. So we can say for sure that RK was considered cheap by his lead managers (expert witnesses) for 27 years. Your point is that there is no direct evidence up to this point for the last 2 years. 27 versus 2. Not a strong point for you to open with.

Yes the collective bargaining agreement requires a minimum spend. Kraft commonly under spent for a few years and then would spend big for 1 year. BB highlighted this pattern. I am not sure that repeating the pattern, as you note, is supporting your argument. The Pats were under the cap in '24, '25, and '26 by $35M, $47M, and $18M respectively. Again I am not seeing a lot of support for your position but the cap and cash spend are different, so maybe.

Again the state-of-the-art training facility was built only after 20+ years of limited facility upgrades. Same pattern. Did you see the players abysmal yearly ratings on the facilities and travel? The Pats planes' interiors will be upgraded in the next few years and then we are supposed to be impressed. The upgrades are late and normal business reinvestments. RK just sold 8% of the Pats for $700M, I don't think he is hurting.

So it is clever to be cheap? How successful would the Pats have been if the team had been clever AND NOT cheap? We will never know.

I do not see it that way. Gonzo is asking for what almost all great players get, what McDuffie and Witherspoon just got, to be paid slightly more than the last guy. The Panthers announced they were going to sign M Williams but he signed here because, at the last minute, we offered more money. Gonzo is asking for the same thing Williams got. It is normal. Williams will be happy for Gonzo. I will be happy for Gonzo. Seems like you will regret a market level contract for Gonzo.
Pete Carroll was so early on, the relevance to BB and after is zero. Kraft's understanding of being an ownerer was different.

Belichick never directly called Kraft cheap, but he did publicly point out that the Patriots were one of the lowest cash-spending teams in the league. Once Kraft aggressively pushed back and denied setting limits, Belichick changed his tune, stating on the record that low cash spending was actually the correct football strategy to maintain a healthy salary cap

Since BB left they are spending. They roll the cap forward, and have only 18 million going into this yera and the highest cap spend of any team, How is that being cheap, they rolled it forward and spent most of it?

He's Rich, yay! not sure the relevance. Other owners are Rich and snce BB left he's sent more than almost all of them factoring in player salaries, the building, the increased staffing.

More successful than a Super Bowl appearance every other year? You mean more Adalius Thomas signings and less Mike Vravel like signings? They may have been less successful. Thye may have been more, they may have been the same, another irrelevant point.

Personally, I believed they would sign him and they should sign him, it is just what has to be done.
Him not signing had nothing to do with Kraft being cheap. It's called negotiations.

Now that he signed, I assume the new response from the Kraft is cheap despite no evidence crowd is he had no choice? He was backed into a corner? Yeah right, as I pointed out the Patriots had some leverage to.

1. Gonzalez has played 34 out of the last 38 games.

2. It's pretty rare for players to play under franchise tags anymore except for running backs.

3. Why bother controlling a guy in a contract when you have to pay him more 2 or 3 years from now than you otherwise would have (if you give him an exclusive rights tag, that is)?

4. Yes, of course he'll be disgruntled. Gilmore advised that he begins his holdout now.

5. If it were me in this situation, I would play this year but I certainly would never sign with the Patriots. And I would play the first 9 games of the next season then commence my holdout. This would force the Patriots to trade me away for peanuts.
-All those things are negotiating tactics. This was a negotiation. Tee Higgin played on the tag.
-I'm not sure why you would have turned down a record-breaking deal for a CB and risked injury to play 9 games, I think he's better off signing a record-breaking deal but to each his own.

Unless of course you do it early and they get hurt. Of it comes out they attack massage givers. Of they get suspended for PED's. Should I go on? Football players have very brief careers, guaranteeing their pay with a hard salary cap is a big gamble, especially at the numbers that Gonzales is getting. Not saying he isn't worth it. Just he is commanding a huge pay day and has had some injuries in the past, so that had to go into consideration. In the end it is done, we still have salary cap space and we have one of the two or three best dbacks in football locked up for a long time.

Wait, are u guys claiming Kraft is stupid and could have paid less, the same guys saying Kraft is cheap and should try to waste more money? (With Kraft meaning “the front office”?)

Oh look. An 11th hour signing. Shocking.

Here’s my take:
First, yay, we got our guy.
Second, the deal is fine so far as we know. Nobody is taking about a guarantee the he always be at x% of new England’s cap…AFAIK.
- Your New England Patriots are considered an especially well run team. Other teams and fan bases envy us.
- narratives that divide, in all media but especially sports media, are gold.
- we, the fans and sports media, are idiots. We want to argue about things we just don’t have data on.
- nice to have Gonzo back in the fold.
