The Brits are adopting a much different approach. Isolate the elderly and infirm- then let the virus work through the population to create herd immunity. The elderly can then renter the population with virtually no one to get them sick. So no school closures, no restaurants closed, open transportation systems etc. Keeping the elderly isolated will help ease the need for critical care. The initial recommendation is 4 months.
That approach is very controversial and they're already thinking about reducing large gatherings.

Dude, are you really this fcking dense? Still trying to downplay this? That was okay 3-4 days ago before every institution in the country shut down and before the global crisis became a sure fire reality. Now you’re just a moron.

Is it my fault you have a reading comprehension issue? I never once said it wasn't serious. All I said is that I am confident it will be beaten. If you want to panic and buy a bunch of ammo, be my guest. And every institution in the country is not shut down...there are federal agencies still open for business in Washington.

To any recruiters and HR background check specialists out there:

Is this guy ****ed if he ever has to get a new job? Will this come up on his background check? Will companies shy away from hiring "the price gouging guy" whose name and picture made national news during a pandemic?

Regards,
Chris
Abso-frigging-lutely. Most everyone checks on potential; hires. What was the guy thinking when he did the interview...?. Reminds me of the guy who bought the drug company making the AIDs drug and jacked up the price 500%... Karma will bite this guy too....

Remember, just because someone tests negative doesn’t mean the second they walk out the door they run into someone that does. This test is only a partial solution.

It’s worse than denial. It’s a partisan defense because he wants to prove that this isn’t a big deal so he can go whack off to Donald Trump porn again.

Agreed but trying to be generous...

Everything we do before a pandemic will seem alarmist. Everything we do after will seem inadequate

Barack didn't do it until 6 months after the 1st case of H1N1 in April of 2009. We'll be fine.

DECLARATION OF A NATIONAL EMERGENCY WITH RESPECT TO THE 2009 H1N1 INFLUENZA PANDEMIC
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
October 24, 2009

“NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, including sections 201 and 301 of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1601 et seq.) and consistent with section 1135 of the Social Security Act (SSA), as amended (42 U.S.C. 1320b-5), do hereby find and proclaim that, given that the rapid increase in illness across the Nation may overburden health care resources and that the temporary waiver of certain standard Federal requirements may be warranted in order to enable U.S. health care facilities to implement emergency operations plans, the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic in the United States constitutes a national emergency. Accordingly, I hereby declare that the Secretary may exercise the authority under section 1135 of the SSA to temporarily waive or modify certain requirements of the Medicare, Medicaid, and State Children's Health Insurance programs and of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Privacy Rule throughout the duration of the public health emergency declared in response to the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic. In exercising this authority, the Secretary shall provide certification and advance written notice to the Congress as required by section 1135(d) of the SSA (42 U.S.C. 1320b-5(d)).”4
Nice to see you and Trump have the same source for your talking points regardless of veracity. Deflect and distract, good job.

Pet food. Everyone forgets the pets.

65 deaths in USA from corona

18,000 from influenza

What am I missing?

That's a good question. I wondered the same thing.

It's 20-30 times more lethal than influenza and approximately twice as contagious.

The problem is the flu doesn't overload our medical system. Coronavirus will. When that happens the death rate goes up. People who need medical attention for whatever reason won't be able to get it.

Reading the article @Adam Seward posted paints a frightening picture especially in regards to reaction time. Countries that have reacted slowly to this virus have shown a death rate ten times more than those who reacted quickly.

The key is to slow it down enough so it doesn't overload the hospitals.

Edit to post Adam's link.

Trump’s H1N1 Swine Flu Pandemic Spin

Again, if you bothered to read the thread, you would know there is a difference between Public Health Emergency and a National Emergency. A Public Health Emergency can be invoked by the HHS Secretary, whereas a National Emergency is invoked by the President. A National Emergency gives the President even more powers to address the situation.

CDC saying school closures of 2 to 3 weeks are basically useless.

They're now saying 4 to 8 weeks... if not the rest of the school year.

The only realistic course of action that remains for us, as far as avoiding a fatal overload is to shut down as much as possible, and as soon as possible. Do now what Italy just started doing, while we still have that 10 day buffer.

It's completely up to the State and Local governments to pull this off. The federal government is not going to do ****.

A topic that doesn't get much discussion around here due to the gender skew of the membership:

Not only is TP in short supply, but there has been a run on feminine pads. Do your wives and daughters a solid and find some if you can.
