Cam Released

I hate to rain on anyone's parade. But it is highly debatable that Hoyer is any better than Cam should Mac go down or poop his pants in year one. We have no competent backups. That is true for most teams, but it would still be nice to have some insurance. Not saying Cam was that, but the unbridled joy from some at Cam being cut is a bit weird. It is pretty unlikely it will make the team better. It frees up a roster spot. But the odds of a bubble player making a significant impact are pretty low.

I totally agree that Newton is a better quarterback than Hoyer. But that doesn't necessarily make him a better backup.

A QB like Newtown who has a wildly different playing style and skill set than the starter, who is a huge personality and media draw and will create unending media chatter about QB controversies when the rookie inevitably hits rough patches, and who has never sat on a bench in his whole life is not a great fit for the backup job. Hoyer is the wise gray eminence who is like an extra coach in the qb room, who nobody looks twice at, and who is a more natural fit to execute a game plan drawn up for Jones in case of mid-game injury.

Now you’ve done it, you’ve let my imaginations and expectations run wild.

Week 4, Jones has some early struggles but hangs tough, defense can’t really stop Brady and the Bucs but comes to play and earns their respect.

Then, an unexpected February rematch…..
Start stitching #7

in other breaking news, Darth Vader is actually Luke Skywalker’s father!

**** you, you movie spoiling jerk! I’ve been waiting my entire life to watch Star Wars, but I was waiting until my oldest turned 13…which is tomorrow.

No mental gymnastics needed. We are left with only 1 of 2 options.

Option 1 BB intentionally avoided playing Mac with the starters believing he may be his week one QB, up to and including the ending of the final preseason game.
Option 2 Something changed sometime after the game to cause a drastic reverse in course than what was planned.

If you believe Mac just plain beat Cam out, then BB is an awful coach and did his young QB and offense no favors. There is no other way to spin it. If option 2, we must ask ourselves what could have changed? It wasn't the covid thing, BB knew about that before season 3. It wasn't Cam's performance in the final game. If BB was thinking about going to Mac up until that point he would have given him a few drives with the starters to see what it looked like. Was it something after the preseason game on the field that swung it? Unlikely. The joint practices and games were the best evidence.

So if it is option 2. It had to be non-football related, and not about the 5 days out, BB already knew about that before the 3rd game.

IMO BB didn't ask Cam what he wanted to do. He told him what he intended to do. And Cam didn't want to the the stop gap. He wanted to be the guy. He believes he has a better chance to catch on else where. It doesn't matter what the world thinks about Cam. It is about what Cam thinks about Cam. And Cam thinks an awful lot of himself. That is clear. If you don't see that then you haven't been paying attention.
Jones played against the Giants 1s with the patriots 1s in joint practice, which belichick values more than exhibition games. Giving Newton 2 series in an exhibition game while making final roster decisions is nothing.
2 series in an exhibition game does not a wild crazy conspiracy theory make.

If you are correct belichick just let the guy he wants as his starting QB leave for no reason.

What’s the saying? I think it’s when you have two quarterbacks, you actually have none.

You have to believe Bill would prefer a clear designation of an alpha and beta QB and avoid any potential schism, especially with all these new players coming in and looking to establish an identity in the locker room and on the field.

Good luck Cam (?)

Well that’s not true.
Russell Wilson, mark samchez, flocco amd
Rpethlisbwrger come to mind off the top
Of my
Head as rookie was who won playoff games…

Tua vs Mac week 1. Grudge match

Maybe. If the unlikely event of a Watson trade to Miami happens, I am assuming Tua would be part of the trade package.

He even alluded to this in his press conference yesterday. Curran asked him something like, "Doesn't it benefit you to keep the starting QB under wraps to make it tougher on Miami?" and Bill answered, "Don't you think it also benefits the players to have a clear view of what the situation is?" (paraphrasing on both). He was talking more about who was starting, but there's a case to be made that the situation he's talking about is muddied if you've got players on the team who are pulling for one QB or another who isn't starting.

Yes I do. I think that charger fans watching 7 losses in Herbert first 8 games and 9 in his first 11 were not happy at all to lose with pretty stats.
But the first 6 losses were by a total
Of 21 points … defense and special teams could have helped with a few wins..

Comments:

1.) I was in the "Cam will start week 1 and it will be difficult to unseat him" camp. I was WWWWWWWWRRROONG.

2.) I am excited to see Mac out there as the starter and playing with the ones! Although, still concerned about the pounding he will have to take....but he played in the SEC. Hope the kid can hold up for 17 grueling games...but if there was ever anyone up to the challenge, it's Michael McCorkle Jones.

3.) I want to take the time to show my appreciation for Cam. He came in to replace the GOAT, came in late, played 15 games despite playing 2 games the previous season, played without premier skill players, took his lumps, and was well liked in the locker room. Thank you, Cam Newton. I'll always be a fan. I hope he finds a job in the league (As a back up QB or possibly as a TE...hell...if Tebow could try out as a TE...ditto for Logan Thomas who is a TE now...why the hell not? He has the speed and the size).

4.) Yes, the big white elephant in the room.....I think his unvaccinated status played a part in this decision. And wonder if Cam will now get vaccinated? And Hoyer too?

5.) I still don't get why Stidham never got a chance to start a single game last year.... after week 6...it is going to be interesting to see what the Pats do about Stiddy and Hoyer....I think we go 2 QB's all year...we just have too many guys on PUP/NFI as well as desirable practice squad guys.

6.) So, Mac vs. Tua in week 1....Mac vs. Wilson in week 2.....Mac vs. Winston in week 3....then the Kid vs. the GOAT in week 4.... holy moley!!!! Lets' goooooooooo!!!!!

Who knows, maybe cam asked for his release rather than be relegated to a backup

Like mostly everyone else, I'm surprised. We'll never know what really went down, but BB has been consistently positive about Newton's play and practicing. I can't help but think this has something to do with stuff related to Newton's absence last week and BB's concern about the locker room if he pulled Cam in week three or four.

Adds up to lots of pressure on the young guy, but he seems to have Brady's desire to thrive on it.

Hard to imagine anyone from whom Mac could learn more than from Brian Hoyer after all these years...and Stidham is an insurance blanket.

We're on to Miami.
