I don't hate the notion, especially given the difficulty of the kick. Although I'm a little old school in terms of I'm not big on rule changes, but it would certainly make things interesting.

My first reaction is that I like the concept. Worth thinking about how that might change the dynamics of the game, especially in late game tying or winning drives with limited time on the clock.

In fact, I wonder if they could limit that rule to the 4th quarter at least to start.

Teams will take the higher percentage 3 points throughout the game, for the most part, I'd think. But if you're down by 3 and driving with little time left, it strikes me as even more exciting to have a team, stopped at the 60 or further, bring out the kicker for a potential win if they're down by 3 and tie if they're down four.

That's a big change right there in the final quarter. Aside from that I wouldn't think teams would want to give up such good field position earlier in the game with a miss, so I only view this as beneficial in exciting game tying or winning situations.

Of course, the second the Patriots lose in such a circumstance we'd be down on it, but for now, I actually like it (in the 4th quarter)

How is kicking a 60+ yard Field Goal NOT earning it? It's 60+ Friggin Yards!

There were 22 field goals of 60+ yards attempted in 2025. Kickers made 12 of them.. That's 54.5%.

In the 2026 UFL season, there were 14 attempts with 8 completed (57.1%).

People are acting like they're a chip shot or something. How is 60+ yards "routine"?

There were 1,088 field goals attempted in 2025 So, 2% of them were from 60+ yards.

Only 876 of the field goal attempts were completed. That's 80.5%.


The league has made tweaks to kick-offs for "player safety" but also changed them to try and make them more relevant after a couple years of a ridiculous number of touchbacks.

Clearly they're examining the potential and what it's impact would be on the NFL.

Fun facts: Field Goals were initially 5 points when the game was created. It was reduced to 4 in 1904 and to 3 in 1909.

That's no different than when the rule was that a player could be out of bounds, touch the football, and get the flag for the ball being kicked out on kick-offs.

Or when the league had to change the rules about Time outs for Icing kickers.

Why not decrease points awarded to FGs from 35 or less to 2 points? I’d rather see teams go for it on 4th down in the red zone.

I think they should decrease the points awarded from 40 yards or more.

So, if you haven't advanced the ball inside the opponent's 25 yard line, you only get 2 points for a FG. That way teams would try to advance the ball more when they're at the 35-40. And the teams who can get a FG after one first down because of their strong-legged kicker should only get 2 points.

Let's not make this sport into Australian Rules Football.

That's an interesting idea but a 60 yarder is too close for a 4th point and shouldn't be worth 2/3 of a TD.

How does an indoor stadium only help one kicker? If anything, the team that plays outdoors may have the edge because they know the prevailing winds for their stadium.

No. A sixty yard field goal isn’t as difficult as it used to be.

No, I think 60 yarders are too commonplace. Maybe if you called it 65 yards, and you could only do it once per game (hit or miss) I could MAYBE get behind it. But 4 points are way too many for any field goal imo
