Cam Released

I don't get why people want Garoppolo back. He is very injury prone, I question his toughness, and he still makes a lot of mistakes. I doubt Garoppolo would come back to the Pats. Jones is going to get at least two seasons to prove he is the QB of the future and I think Jimmy is going to want to go somewhere he can have a shot at starting if not the guaranteed starter.
I could see Jimmy ended up in NYG replacing Daniel Jones in 2022.

I think Miami is going to put a hurting on Jones. While we are overjoyed at no more Cam, the rest of the league is psyched to get a rookie QB with only 13 games of college experience and only 10 sacks in his college career.

Still, I would rather grow with Mac than be stuck with Cam.

Are you sure about that? The Pats have one of the best starting o-lines in the league. And if Jones is anything like he was in the preseason during the regular season, I don't think teams will be looking at him as a rookie with only 13 games experience and 10 sacks.

I hope so but preseason is not real games. Flores is good at scheming things up defensively and the Fins have a good defense. I am not expecting Mac to light the world on fire as a rookie and playing the Fins in game one will be no cake walk. I am glad it is at home.

This is a good example of being able to pretty quickly measure the type of QB he's going to be then - isn't it?

Let's say they do blitz him a lot...a lot of press man. I assume you think this coaching staff can make the appropriate adjustments to such a defensive strategy? I also assume that unlike last season there is the TE talent to exploit such a strategy (for example - chip and go hot routes or screen game).

Given the Giants game - I would also think a good assumption is the coaching staff working Jones through a lot of throw aways, quicker decisions to either throw or scramble, etc to reduce the high sack totals he experienced.

We cant know what kind of pro QB he'll be if he doesn't experience the "hurting" moments, but this situation, with this staff and team, the elements are there to enable him to either demonstrate that ability to adapt and change as the NFL throws him curve balls...or we'll know pretty damn quickly we'll need to go into another draft looking for the heir.

I'm anticipating better QB play this year. NOT that Jones will be a world beater as a rookie. But Cam sucked so bad last year I honestly don't think the guy is good enough to play in the league anymore. And Bill has proven to me that he knows how to evaluate QB talent. Cam doesn't get cut if Jones is not ready. Team will be better than it was last year. Whether Jones is the guy or not remains to be seen.

Preseason aren't real games, but you can see that Jones is way ahead of where most rookies are at reading defenses and going through progressions. Jones looked better this preseason than Garoppolo looked in his third or fourth preseason.

Not saying that he won't struggle as a rookie, but many rookie QBs do well even against good defenses right out of the gate. A huge advantage for Jones right now is no one has a "book" on his with all his strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies. This means Flores will have difficulty scheming things to explicitly exploit Jones' weaknesses and tendencies like he would with a seasoned pro. It usually takes at least 4-6 six starts from a QB before teams start to develop a book on him.

STOP. He was the holder for FGs in most of the games which counts as games played. He started 4 games when Tua was out and then 13 last year. So he had 17 not 13, my mistake.

You're mistake your inability to actually read Game Logs. He threw passes as a freshman, a sophomore and a Junior (when he was the starter). Just because he didn't START in the other games doesn't mean he didn't take snaps other than as the holder for FGs.

Look at the game logs.

He took snaps as the QB in 30 games. NOT 17. Care to try again?

Plus he's now going to have two full weeks facing the absolute worst the number ones on D can throw at him.

you heard me
Well it wasn’t hearing you it was that you make no sense. I assume you are saying Brady didn’t attract receivers?
AB, Gordon, Demaryios Thomas all came here in 2019.

Wait. Let me get this straight.
You think that belichick wanted to start newton in week 1 but sat him down and said the guy he drafted in the first round is eventually going to play, so he asked the guy he wanted to start whether he would like to play or get paid to go home?
And you think the guy no one has wanted for 2 years thought he had better options elsewhere?
The mental gymnastics required to reach that conclusion are epic.
No mental gymnastics needed. We are left with only 1 of 2 options.

Option 1 BB intentionally avoided playing Mac with the starters believing he may be his week one QB, up to and including the ending of the final preseason game.
Option 2 Something changed sometime after the game to cause a drastic reverse in course than what was planned.

If you believe Mac just plain beat Cam out, then BB is an awful coach and did his young QB and offense no favors. There is no other way to spin it. If option 2, we must ask ourselves what could have changed? It wasn't the covid thing, BB knew about that before season 3. It wasn't Cam's performance in the final game. If BB was thinking about going to Mac up until that point he would have given him a few drives with the starters to see what it looked like. Was it something after the preseason game on the field that swung it? Unlikely. The joint practices and games were the best evidence.

So if it is option 2. It had to be non-football related, and not about the 5 days out, BB already knew about that before the 3rd game.

IMO BB didn't ask Cam what he wanted to do. He told him what he intended to do. And Cam didn't want to the the stop gap. He wanted to be the guy. He believes he has a better chance to catch on else where. It doesn't matter what the world thinks about Cam. It is about what Cam thinks about Cam. And Cam thinks an awful lot of himself. That is clear. If you don't see that then you haven't been paying attention.

Anyone know when NIKE'S contract with the NFL is up? I don't want to feed a dime into that SLAVER Company..

I don't think it's about Covid or who should or shouldn't get vaccinated rather it's about the NFL's Covid policies and how an unvaccinated player could miss significant time whether he tests positive or not. BB may not personally care whether a player gets vaccinated or not but he does care about how it will affect the team.
Exactly. How do you think the Colts feel today about Carson Wentz' $21,300,000 cap number?

Flip side of this is that Cam is the best and least expensive proven free agent QB on the market, but because he's not vaccinated there may be no market for him, Cam should be in the car right now on the way to Bristol CT to let Stephen A give him the shot on First Take. His phone will ring off the hook. (Do phone's have hooks any more?)

Frankly I just wanna see the progression of mac jones even when he makes a mistake. They will run the ball a lot but i hope they don’t get conservative with mac either.
Dust off the 2001 playbook.........then take the training wheels off when he is ready.....

Yin and yang:

I'm looking forward to true play action capability again at all three levels (short, mid and long) - two-TE alignments that can truly be run or pass and making a defense pay for the mismatch either way (running on light formations and passing on heavy ones).

I'm fearful of McDaniels overusing the shotgun again. We saw in preseason a lot of Jones in shotgun. While you can run out of shotgun, the play action tends to not be as effective in freezing the defense causing hesitation.

Better qb - check
Better wr's- check
Better O-line- check
Better Rb's- check

Better D-line- check
Better lb's- check
Better secondary- possibly with Gilmore

but agree totally with your premise, this is a much better team than last year when we won 7 games and were lacking talent throughout the roster.
And had a tougher schedule with extensive travel.
