Any Cooks follow-up?

Malcolm Jenkins took out Cooks, no penalty it really pissed me off.. if the NFL was serious about concussions there would be a rule that Jenkins sits out until Cooks returns.. but as they are not the status quo suffices.

The same thing for when Gronkowski was concussed.. there is a lot of real estate between the knees and head that he can be tackled.

BTW Malcolm Jenkins also took out Hogan on the final hail mary, that was a blatant foul. Can never understand why the so called, "letting them play" only applies to the Superbowl.. in the biggest game on the biggest stage you change the standard??

Cmon now. He was a runner at that point. If you want to complain that the rule for headshots to runners is garbage and needs to be changed, go for it. But, that play was clean and legal. Cooks is great at getting open and catching that ball, but my goodness does he leave a lot to be desired as a run after catch kinda guy. If helmet to helmet is illegal when the player is defenseless to prevent concussions, it should also be illegal when the player is a runner. It's still going to result in a concussion regardless of how defenseless he was.

This hit was similair to Smith-Schuster hit on Burfict that got him suspended.

If these hits aren't going to get called because "he's a runner" then no hits should be called

Cooks is great at getting open and catching that ball, but my goodness does he leave a lot to be desired as a run after catch kinda guy. When he took off after catching that ball, he looked like some dumbass playing Madden for the first time flickin’ the stick around.

He had to come back for the ball which his momentum took him back towards the LOS and he then cut back up-field , saw a defender coming and cut back another way. Then got blindsided.


People like you whine about him not getting the YARDS AFTER CATCH and then when he's trying to make moves to do that here you are complaining about it.

I do get the feeling that knocking out our best player or one of the best players is now a new tactic to defeat the pats

Of course it is, not sure it is a Pats thing but its clearly an excellent trade, 15 yards in the beginning of the game for one of the best players of the other team. I thing Peterson and Marone didnt give the order but they didn't need to. It was playoff games.

The NFL should implement the targeting rule from the NCAA.

The Hogan thing bothers me a lot still. Most of the game the refs let them play, but that one especially should have been called. Probably other ones too earlier in the game.

Maybe it was just coincidence, but it looked to me that both gronk and cooks were targeted, it is one way to slow brady and the offense down.

there's a valid point above by Andy - you're going to have incidental helmet contact on a lot of running plays.

I don't watch NCAA, but how does it work? Just if the refs think "yeah that looks like intent to injure"?

Have to agree. Cooks (lack of) awareness on that play was shocking, but it is hard to watch that play and not say that the defender had other options. Either try to protect guys heads by calling this **** or don’t, but the rule as it is applied turns out to be pretty arbitrary. It’s unclear, unenforceable on a consistent basis, and it doesn’t prevent injury.

That’s not to say I think potentially destroying a guys brain is offset by 15 yards or $27,421 or whatever the fine is. Just a ****ty situation. It’s as bad of a ‘rule’ as the catch rule.

Maybe dumbass was too strong of a word. How about immature, inexperienced?! Does that make you feel better? The man, and yes, he is a man, looks completely lost out there when he is running with the ball. He is always trying to work the field laterally, and drops first chance he gets to avoid taking a tackle as opposed to recognizing the situation to gain the extra yards. Good receiver, makes big plays, but at this time, not worth the big bucks. If you think anything he has done this year deserves a description otherwise, go for it. But don’t ever try to argue at this point in his career that Cooks is a savvy tough as nails route runner. He relies on his speed and natural talents above all else. Or, he isn’t being used properly and would perform better somewhere else. I believe he will get better, and hopefully tougher as he gets more experience with this team. Until then, he’s a deep threat, and I love him, but I’ll take a chain mover every day.

Are you kidding me? How can you lead with your shoulder AND your helmet?!? It’s not possible. You either lead with a helmet, or lead with a shoulder. Either way, one or the other follows. Cooks lacked some serious awareness on that damn play. If that was any Pats player laying a hit on an Eagle, I would’ve cheered with joy! Do i want a guy to get hurt? Of course not, but that’s gonna happen in the game of football. Do I believe Jenkins tried to hurt him? No! But I do believe he meant to knock the **** out of him, as he should’ve.

The helmet to helmet rule only applies to defenseless receivers. There is no “targeting” penalty in the nfl.
If you throw a flag for helmet to helmet on a runner first of all you will be throwing 20+ flags per game and then on half of them you have to decide which player to call it on when the rb lowers his head.

Yes. I know there isn't. My point is the rule needs to be changed because these flags are supposedly for player safety. But the fact that a defender can come in targeting a guy because he is a "runner" is half assed

If college football can review hits to determine if there is clear evidence of targeting nfl can too. They can tell the difference between intentional and incidental.

No way around it Jenkins came in looking to do more than just tackle Cooks and the evidence is there in the screenshots.

Cooks has to have his head on a swivel. Once he caught it and ran, he is a runner and not afforded protection of helmet to helmet. Think of the hit Michael Floyd put on the Dolphin (?) last year. Similar situation. Floyd was blocking for Edelman and the DB wasn't watching..... In those situations, either watch everybody to avoid getting lit up or go to the ground. Cooks looked disoriented and paid the price unfortunately.

The hit in cooks was entirely legal.

Church got fined $24,000 for his hit on Gronk. As with the Cooks hit by Jenkins, Gronk was already a runner at the time, so - no flag. I'd be surprised if Jenkins isn't also fined.

Anyway, there are consequences (though well after the fact), just no in-game penalty. I agree though. If the NFL is serious about protecting players from concussions, this type of open-field hit needs to get flagged, at the very least. Also, sitting the player who committed the foul (penalty box?) until the injured player is cleared would drive the point home not only to the player, but to his team.

Welker was a master at ducking under incoming hits and diving forward for a couple-three yards. Edelman actually took awhile to learn that. Cooks will need to be taught if he's going to expand his route portfoilo to include some of the Edelman/Amendola routes.
