Patriots Player Departure Patriots are sending WR Kayshon Boutte to the Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick

it will be interesting to see what Pop does this year because I think that if he has a similar season as last year, he won’t be on the team next year also.

I think the Patriots would be perfectly fine playing Chism on the last year of his UDFA contract instead of paying Pop.
What do you mean last year in the case of Chism?? Don't UDFA's sign for four years??

I've always liked Boutte, but he's a WR3. Probably better than average, but a WR3. He isn't improving beyond this point; this is as good as he gets. I like the player and how he went about his business: no drama, bought in, and in sync with Maye. All true. I don't think he's bad, but this is as good as he'll be.

The Pats are weaker today by trading him, but it's best long-term for this year. Even with Brown and Doubs, I still believe that for this team to win, Williams must become the WR3 and fourth option.

I said last year that to reach the Super Bowl or advance in the playoffs, they needed home-run plays from either Williams or Henderson. They never got them, particularly in the Super Bowl, and that's a big reason why they fell short. One 50-yard bomb to Williams could have changed that game. Lacking explosive plays against great defenses, you either need amazing precision or explosion: consistently grinding out small chunks without getting tripped up, or hitting huge plays to manufacture extra points.

This team still needs that, even with Brown and Doubs. Can Brown provide it? Maybe. But Williams is probably still the best answer. If they want to win the championship, a cheap, easy TD would go a long way in the playoffs. Boutte can't give them that; Williams can. But he needs the reps, the sync with Maye, and room to develop.

Sucks, but Boutte wasn't going to be on the field much this year. Between AJ, Romeo and Hunter, he would be lucky to have as many catches as Pop.

Boutte wasn’t getting re-signed and Williams’ skill set is a better fit as a complementary WR to Brown & Doubs IMO. Douglas & Williams have to perform now though.
Dumb trade. Another of the many that Wolf has made.

Never should have added Brown. Should have let Boutte continue to develop.

You have no right using facts and data to override the emotionally weak idiots having tantrums. You are a sick, sick man.
He was injured and out several games. And most of those 30 some catches were big plays or first downs or really strong intermediate routes that most of our young receivers have never had the brains or hands for. Raw receiving yard stats doesn’t tell the story.

????? Unless Boutte was causing issues behind the scenes — which to our knowledge wasn’t the case — this return looks very, very light. Would rather have kept Boutte and rolled the dice on Chism getting through to the practice squad.
I agree - with the exception that holding players hostage that you don't plan on extending can have implications for other players on a team. Knowing that your coaches and the front office are trying to do you right sends a good message to others on the team.

The Texans may actually want to extend him (not for a ton but still more than his salary this year as Bourne undoubtedly wants some security, though I'd think they'd wait on that decision.

Since we don't play the Texans this year that may have contributed to finding a trading partner.

Another factor is that the Patriots are trading a guy in the final year of his contract with a guy on D that's signed for the next 3 years at @ $1 mil a year. So the Texans get a one year rental in return for a young cheaply signed defensive player.

I don't think Reed got a lot of snaps, but when he did, he actually grades out on PFF better than Woodson, although it seems like maybe he's more of a special teamer to start.

While Reed is probably more of a strong safety he's really more of a hybrid for D

I was already expecting him to be traded. And was expecting a 5th back, people here do tend to overvalue the players we get

But i do not understand the safety return. LB would be ideal, Houston has so many DEs...

Maybe Schooler is not close to return, but still, this is a head scratcher
Had Boutte remained through this season and walked in FA we would have gotten a compensatory pick likely. Instead the team took what Caserio offered them in a pick and a player.. in a perfect world Vrabel should have been adamant on an edge rusher..

That’s fair. JAG to me is literally Kyle Williams. I still believe Boutte contributed much more than you give him credit for last season. Drake went to him in several important, gotta have it spots.
While I agree on your take in regards to Boutte. I disagree with your take on Williams. Judging him because the Pats brought him along slowly is ridiculous.

This could be an indication as to why we couldn’t acquire an edge rusher in the deal. Houston seems to be banged up at edge behind their starters; or maybe they actually wanted Reed. Just my opinion..

Jaylen Reed draft profile coming out in 2025:
* 6’0”, 212 lbs
* 4.49 40-yard dash
* Penn State safety
* Second-team All-Big Ten in 2024
* 98 tackles, 3 INTs, 2.5 sacks his final college season
* Strengths: instincts, physical downhill play, run support, versatility, closing burst
* Concerns: open-field/one-on-one tackling, hip fluidity and deep coverage athleticism
* Projected more as a versatile box/strong safety and special-teams contributor than a true center-field safety.

The draft pick is a 2028 seventh-round pick???

Those are uhh... Pretty important skills for a safety of all positions lmao.

This is incorrect. The Pats MAY have been eligible for a 2028 Compensatory pick IF they didn't sign someone of equal or greater value to Boutte.

The Texans don't have an Edge Rusher that they were willing to Part with that is better than Swinson.

We’ll see. I should be fair to a second year receiver. It’s been hard to do so as a Patriots fan given our history. New times though.

All your posts are absolute crap and you are allowed to stay. Thats the pot calling the kettle black.

That’s your response? Tells me everything I need to know, ya jerk off. Stop quoting if you’ve got nothing worth dribbling out of your mouth.

Nope UDFAs get three years but they are RFA at the end of their rookie contract

Anyone saying Boutte is better than Doubs is ludicrous; and I love Boutte (I mean, who doesn’t?..) Doubs is a better all around receiver & better in the red zone.

You have no clue is we would have gotten a comp pick.
