Patriots Player Departure Patriots are sending WR Kayshon Boutte to the Texans for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick

A 5th would make me feel way better

If someone had offered more than they actually got, they would have taken it. Boutte has been on the trading block for some months now, and apparently the rest of the league wasn't jumping. He's a 1-year rental that will be looking to be paid.

Why didn't you urge Vrabel to get a better pick when you guys were in RKs office this afternoon? Bummer

Because he was on a phone call with Woody Johnson who was asking him advice on how to get your head out of his ass.

Jordan Love isn't Drake Maye. Love had more than a thousand yards less than Maye. Had a significantly lower yards per attempt than Maye. Had eight less TDs than Maye. And the Packers' offense is very different than the Patriots' offense. And Love was injured for part of the year last year.

But you are also discounting all the games after Boutte got injured as if he has an excuse for all those games even though it is almost half a season.
Injuries are usual bad luck. Are you saying Boutte is more likely to get injured than a typical player? I disagree.

He does miss a lot of games. I have no idea if that's more than a typical player.

I don't like it but here is my rationalization: Boutte is a better receiver than Reed is a safety. (This is why I don't like it). But Boutte is a depth outside WR who could see few snaps without an important injury. So are you going to carry him on the game day roster given he is unlikely to play? Over someone like Hollins who can also play outside and is a better blocker? Game day slots are too valuable to spend on an "extra". Reed can play special teams and Boutte cannot. So without injuries Reed is a more important contributor than Boutte.

Reed was unlikely to make the Texans roster so we could have picked him up on waivers. Essentially we gave up Boutte for a seventh round pick. Not great.

At the end of the day, I hate that Boutte’s gone. He’s a solid, classy & clutch player…but if LeBron gets to play with his son, why can’t Boutte? Who would pass up an opportunity like that?…Family over everything…

this feels like a really bad trade.
We traded:
our pick 187 in the 2023 draft
for
their pick 187 in the 2025 draft plus their seventh round pick in the 2028 draft.

Seems like we got more value back than we sent, based just on the picks right?

Why do you say that Reed was unlikely to make their roster? He had played well for them last year. Started both playoff games.

Do this with Brady. Pick is irrelevant once you have the player.

Looks like Reed is already a player. People are not looking past his sixth round draft status.

As a rookie last year he started on PUP, was activated to the roster in late October and played in seven games, starting one, before going on IR. Was brought back from IR and started both playoff games.

His line against Buffalo: 12 tackles, 9 of them solo, plus a fumble recovered. If he does that well against the Bills for us I’ll be happy.
I posted this ^ stat line about 2 hours before you sent this message.

Yes. That totally makes sense. Unless you ignore the fact that picks in later years have lesser value then picks currently. A 2025 pick 6 round pick is a UDFA equivalent in 2023. So is the 2028 pick.

Not to mention the 6 years of playing time lost.

Strange coincidence? It’s been a banner year for guys in Boston named “Jaylen” or “Brown”

Hey, at least we got Chism still!

.....

And he's going to be a valuable guy moving the chains on 3rd downs. Like Welker and Edelman he has the ability to find the holes in defenses, has excellent hands, and is as tough as they get.

And not having to use a waiver spot… or pay Boutte, which many here are seemingly ignoring.

This trade will just come down to how good a player creed can become for the Patriots. If they are right about him then it's a good trade. If he's just a special teamer it's a bad trade.

Houston acquired Reed Blankenship in the offseason to play safety. Reed became superfluous and would. have probably not made the team.

Bedard:

Also, as I reported repeatedly, the league's view of Boutte was not nearly on the same level as the local view - both media and fanbase. They told you that when the Pats put the 'For Sale' sign up around the NFL Draft and found no takers.
The acquisition of Reed bolsters the Pats' depth at the safety position, which is being tested not only because of veteran Mike Brown’s rough summer, but also by an injury to Craig Woodson (which occurred on day two of the joint practices with the Eagles).
