Schefter: Kayshon Boutte "deemed expendable" during draft weekend

What is the probability of a 5th or 6th round pick ever making a meaningful multi year contribution on offense or defense in the NFL? Something like 3%? Why trade guys for that?
If Boutte is judged to have no future with us, then a 5th or 6th is a win.

5th and 6th rounders are often special teamers or backups. That may be more than we hope for from Boutte.

As an aside, Douglas is in the same position. Folks have guessed that he really doesn't fit well into a Josh offense. Alternatively, he MIGHT be trained up to be a long-term starter in the slot.

A little harsh.
Harsh? Yes. True? Yes. I am sorry I hurt your feelings. Ummm na I am not. If there is a way to upgrade the roster and it costs Boutte to do it, you take it.

From Bert Breer. And I should point out that this was published earlier this morning, before I saw the report from Schefter. So, this would be two national reporters independently putting it out there that the Patriots might deal Boutte...

And if there is no trade down, I think the Patriots will keep looking for ways to build up their war chest of draft picks, maybe even with a trade of a veteran like receiver Kayshon Boutte.
Big assumption that they are making the reports "independently"'.

Many times they bounce off one another with schtick like what Breer stated. So they can LOOK like they are "in the know". Breer, Curran, and others have done this repeatedly over the years.

FWIW, Schefter gives no reasoning as to why Boutte might be traded; he simply lists a bunch of players: "Here are players on rookie contracts who could be deemed expendable," and Boutte is the last name on that list.

Fundamentally speaking, there's no compelling reason not to trade Polk or Baker if someone is interested.
I've heard reports that behind the scenes Boutte is a pain in the ass who thinks he's a whole lot better than he actually is. Vrable may not want to deal with a diva #4 WR.

Someone saying a Pats WR is expendable is an oxymoron.

Boutte put up very good numbers (relative to the other Pats WR) on a crappy team last year. He was the best WR that the team finished the season with. People ignoring how screwed up the Offense was last year with Mayo/AVP are doing all the WR an injustice.

Boutte has busted his arse for the team and improved tremendously from his time as a barely 21 yr old who fubared his chances to be a top WR pick. I think people have no idea what a "DIVA" mentality is for a WR and think that anyone who speaks up with a modicum of confidence is a "DIVA".

I'm not saying he's going to turn into a Stephon Diggs or Deion Branch, but he's already as good as David Givens was and he's younger than Givens was entering his 3rd year. If the O-line is even average this year, I would expect Boutte to put up 850-1000 yards. I expect Diggs to put up 900-1200 yards. I'd expect both Douglas, Hooper, and Henry to put up similar numbers to last season with Stevenson/Gibson putting up 12-18 Rushing TDs combined while also being productive in the passing game.

I wish him well on his next team. If any team has him as close to as good as you think, he will be given a significant opportunity somewhere.

Big assumption that he's going somewhere else.

no assumptions
I just think it unlikely that he will be here instead of the other SIX plus whoever we might draft.

Well I guess we could consider this progress. After all we’d probably bring in a 7th rounder for this 6th round receiver while last year we cut our 2nd round receiver (Thornton) for NADA!!

After the draft he may drop down the depth chart I see Diggs, Bourne, Douglas, Polk and Baker as 5 WRs
Polk and Baker are getting another year to prove themselves.

If Boutte could figure it out better than Polk and Baker last year, then that's something I wanna see under good tutelage.
