Schefter: Kayshon Boutte "deemed expendable" during draft weekend

Those are called UDFAs, bud.
Ok I won't go in the light.

FWIW, Schefter gives no reasoning as to why Boutte might be traded; he simply lists a bunch of players: "Here are players on rookie contracts who could be deemed expendable," and Boutte is the last name on that list.

Fundamentally speaking, there's no compelling reason not to trade Polk or Baker if someone is interested.

This.

This thread is picture perfect training on how to change a title into clickbait.

Schefter: Kayshon Boutte "deemed expendable" during draft weekend

Amazing what dropping two words does.

To me this is evidence that the receivers currently on the roster won’t prevent the Pats from drafting a receiver or also multiple receivers.

Not sure it makes sense to trade Boutte for anything less than a 5th otherwise Pats should keep him into camp and see how it goes.

For full context, he was writing about "players on rookie contracts who could be deemed expendable". When making a list like that you go team by team and kind of force-fit guys in. This is different than him reporting NE is actually trying to trade him.

It does make some sense though. We've all broken down the WR room.

Diggs - Z/slot
Douglas - slot
Hollins - X
Bourne - Z
Boutte - Z that masqueraded as an X last year.
Polk - Z/slot
Baker - Z/X

They really need to add another X to the room but only so many roster spots. Boutte seems to be in that sweet spot of good enough that someone around the league might have interest, but also not good enough that they view him as a big part of their future. Ideally he's someone that gets replaced in the lineup to be relegated to a #4 type WR. If someone gives you something for that type of guy, it's worth exploring, especially because they do have a crowded depth chart of guys that they might view as worth keeping on the roster.

They do have to weight that against putting a respectable team out there though, so I'd be surprised if they made that move. But if they draft a WR high? I guess I can see it. Let's just say they took a WR in round 1 or 2... presumably that guy should be able to take a day 1 role. Then you have Diggs and Douglas. That'd be your top 3 and then you still have Bourne/Polk/Baker fighting it out for #4 and even Hollins who could justify a 5th gameday active spot as a STer as well. But we saw last year how risky it can be penciling in even some drafted high for a day 1 role.

Schefter making $h!t up to get views: his narrative works perfectly with K Bourne. Do some actual research Schefter lazy speculation. Yeah going Trade a 23 year old over a deserving 30 year old.

Hollins X he's more like a why?? no pun.

From Bert Breer. And I should point out that this was published earlier this morning, before I saw the report from Schefter. So, this would be two national reporters independently putting it out there that the Patriots might deal Boutte...

And if there is no trade down, I think the Patriots will keep looking for ways to build up their war chest of draft picks, maybe even with a trade of a veteran like receiver Kayshon Boutte.

I think this is one of two things.
A. They are making another move at receiver which will leave Boutte without a spot on the roster.
B. They are continuing to push out anyone who might not be a good fit culture wise.

What's Boutte get them? A 5th or 6th at best?

If they are viewing it as addition by subtraction then I think they take anything if they're going to cut him anyways. I think he showed enough last season to at least take him to camp but the timing of this makes me think they want to move on so my guess would be they think he's a pain in the ass/immature etc.

They need a 6th. Dump him for a 6th rounder, I'd take that as a win.

It only makes sense if they are bringing another WR in. Boutte has shown a lot more than Polk and Baker and should be ahead of them on the depth chart.

Current Depth Chart

Diggs - X or Z
Pop - Slot
Boutte- X or Z
Hollins - X
Bourne - Z
Polk - Left bench
Baker - Right bench

Realistically, looking at that depth chart we have a lot of 3rd/4th WRs and only 1 I’d consider a number 2 (Diggs). We really need to upgrade this position

You are gonna be the leader of Camp Hollins by week 3. He's gonna be making plays on STs and catching 4-5 per game, and you'll be president of his freakin' fan club.

Mack has most of the makings to become a fan favorite. I think his ceiling will be a Brandon Lafell/Chris Hogan type but if Diggs has anything left that would make Hollins the perfect complement.

I can't wait for your twin to get on board. It'll be hysterical.

Most players on the roster are expendable.

I think Diggs is still a borderline 1.
I also think Pop is a 2.

I think there are several that could be a 3 or 4 but none of them are so good that they aren't expendable except maybe Polk and that's just because we invested a 2nd rounder so let's at least see it through another training camp.

So basically I only see 2 as not expandable and best case we find a player who can compete to push Diggs and Pop down to WR2 and 3.

But we do have a decent amount of players that could be WR3 or 4 on the roster now but none are so good not to be upgraded or beat out. So in other words expendable.

The very least case we should be drafting someone (or trading for) to push that group to competing for 4 and 5.

Not sure why Schefter picks on Boutte as he might be the best of that second group. Polk probably should be but obviously proved nothing. And Bourne on year 2 after his injury could also still be best of those 3. I see Baker at the bottom of this group but maybe better coaching can still tap something.

Could be that of the three - Boutte, Polk, and Baker, only Boutte has any trade value. What have Polk and Baker shown that would excite a trade?
