Schefter: Kayshon Boutte "deemed expendable" during draft weekend

30 catches for 381 yards isn’t close to what I would call solid.
Maye played 63% of the snaps so that would equal 48/600 over a full season. Thats not great, it’s well below acceptable for a starting WR.
I don't know what to tell you. Kid finished third on the team in total receiving yards in a bad offense where Maye spent most of the year running for his life. He was also consistently one of Maye's most reliable downfield threats. And I'm not comparing him to the rest of the NFL. I'm comparing him to the current roster.

You're essentially saying he's terrible. I'm saying I don't hate him as their fourth receiver and would certainly prefer they get some more talent. Hopefully someone else emerges eventually to take the #1 spot, then Diggs, Pop, and Boutte or whoever else at #4.

Problem is, he shouldn’t be expendable, he’s the Pat’s 3rd best receiver at this moment.

If I were to wager a guess it would be that he didn’t hit it off with Vrabel and the new coaching staff. Similar to Milton it could be that they don’t want him in their locker room. He’s had attitude issues in the past. I was hoping he had gotten over them, as he really improved last season, but some guys never lose the attitude.

Not to muddy the water further, but this is the final five games with Maye:

He led all receivers and everyone but Hooper in total yards. Add in the 7/7 117yd performance with Milton in the finale, and the numbers skyrocket:

Again, not saying he's great. Just saying he's not terrible. At least not on this current roster.

I would have to agree with this, and I do wonder if this might be why they're considering moving on from him.

Boutte is in a similar spot too he just doesn't have the rookie year Pop did. My opinion is Pop is the better of the 2 and the more likely to improve but you're entitled to like Boutte more.

I never actually said anything about Boutte....I just said that I think Pop may be used closer to the way Amandola was used than the Edelman/Walker slot.

I think it is important to reiterate that this is all based on Schefter writing an article looking around the league for players near the end of their rookie deals that could be moved.....it doesn't even pretend to hint at anything about what the team thinks.

Schaefer is pretty plugged in. Rarely a "throw **** against the wall" guy.

Agree. If Mike Reiss says something Patriots-related or Schefter says anything NFL-related, I listen because they’re not making things up. Not that Reiss has said anything about Boutte, just making the point in general. If Schefter thinks Boutte might be available, it means he is.

I would not be too keen on such a move. The Patriots are seriously understaffed as far as quality WRs and Boutte is pretty good. My other problem is that the Patriots would probably get fleeced again. As a poster here noted, other organizations must get excited when Wolf gives them a call, thinking he is an easy mark; I don't know if this true--maybe it was Bob who got fleeced on the Milton trade.

Playoff clutchness aside Pop already produces about the same as Danny did for us. I'm not saying Pop will get to Wes or Jules levels but hopefully year 3 as him improved. And really here's to hoping he gets a chance to show what he can do in the playoffs.

I can't see moving any of the kids before camp. No one has much of an idea of how they will look come mid-August.

On the other hand, Vrabel has to decide whether Bourne is part of the future or not. If not, then trade him whenever. His trade value isn't dependent on how he plays in camp or the pre-season. It is dependent on holes on the rosters of other teams, perhaps caused by injuries.

On the other hand, I could see us keeping Bourne. Bourne should be a contributor with Josh as OC.

For me, I see Diggs, Hollins and Polk as almost locks. The rest are all very, very expendable.
======
Polk will simply be given another chance. He might be the #6 WR and almost never active, or he could be a valuable contributor.

Schefter's credibility is pretty low these days.

Can't some of the players that flat out suck be expendable? I thought we were going to go into this offseason to replace Vederian Lowe and Demontrey Jacobs...

We've cut two Captains, traded a promising young QB for peanuts, and brought in 67 year old Morgan Moses to play tackle- who most recently couldn't make Aaron Rogers look like a competent quarterback.

Now the only homegrown wide receiver talent they've had since Jacoby Meyers is expendable ? Great Job guys...

It really wouldn't make sense to trade him whether or not they draft or trade for someone over keeping Polk and Baker who have shown absolutely nothing.

I saw Boutte shy away from contact a few times.

Why would you want that from your #4 WR?

The receivers were a big part of the problem. Being 3rd out of that crew isn’t saying much. He had more invisible games than good games.

We should compare everyone to the NFL. Better then bad players we have isn’t a solution, good compared to the league is.

I don’t know where I said he was terrible. You said he was great last year. I think he would struggle to get reps as the 4 ahead of Hollins. I think if it comes down to a guy who rarely plays and is in a developmental spot they would prefer to take a chance on Polk.

We agree he isn’t a 2, but I think they signed a 4 they like better.

The logic there would be either guy would be sitting on the bench so why not give your #2 pick a second chance?

I wouldn't want that from any player, but he was the one they had last season, and my comments had more to do with his production relative to the other players on offense last year. If they find a better player to add down the depth chart who puts up similar or better numbers, I'm definitely fine with that and wouldn't miss him.

I wouldn't be trading anyone outside of Bourne because he can get you something. The rest, they are young, and let them figure it out in training camp. They don't have enough talent to be trading away young guys who might be something.

He had a great year relative to the guys around him. I guess you can compare everyone to other guys in the league, but I don't follow everyone's 3rd or 4th receiver, so I wouldn't be able to give a good comparison of where he fits in.

But he turned out to be a pleasant surprise here in a season that didn't have many of them. And I'm fine with them replacing him. I do keep forgetting about Hollins. Honestly haven't even watched anything on him yet since they signed him. The Diggs signing sort of overshadowed it. I don't know how they feel about Bourne or Baker, but I'm sure Polk will get every opportunity to pull out of whatever funk he ended up in last season. And maybe they'll also draft somebody this weekend, so who knows.
