I think everyone's view of this trade would be a LOT different if the guy we get back for Boutte would have been a LB or an Edge guy. I was pretty happy with the S group backing up Woodson and KB. I was especially happy with Saunders play thus far. I think everyone's feelings would have been changed IF safety had been one of the more obvious needs.
Reed sounds like a rising player who looked good at the end of last season and into the playoffs and now during camp. But the question is do we need him?
The pick is what it is, an acknowledgement that the Texans are getting the more immediate impact from the trade. I would have been much happier if it had been a 7th in 26.
As this camp has gone on, I am FAR more comfortable with losing Boutte than I was before it. Not only have Brown and Doubs looked good, so have Pop, Hollins and Williams, as well as Chism and Degenero. Like most fans we over rate our own players most of the time. With Williams have a good camp, Boutte became redundant since Williams has a much higher upside. The fact is that Boutte is a JAG, and I mean that in the best way. He is a solid NFL boundary receiver, but nearly EVERY team has a guy just like him on their rosters and most of the time they are NOT starting.
He was a starter for US, but that was because our receiving room was so bad. Boutte did well in that environment, but he did no "excel" at it. Remember, the guy had 551 receiving yds last season and with the noise we make, we make it sound like he had over a thousand. Come on, he is NOT fast. He is NOT big. He is NOT twitchy quick. He has great hands and will come down with a contested catch. Boutte is a guy who is an asset in a WR room, a solid NFL WR, but Just Another Guy.
