Going back to Erhardt Perkins is a terrible idea. Keep Maye in a west coast offense.
If McDaniels was the OC, I would be surprised if he hasn’t changed gears a little and incorporate some of what his brother does in Miami while still using some aspects of EP.

We’re not talking about Vrabel who was 260. Hunter is 190. It would be a mistake for him to play both often in the same game.
Beyond the injury risk, it would be virtually impossible for a player to be able to fully participate in two different sets of drills/skills and game plans. Maybe that is part of the master plan for this year. Dumb down the offense and defense to the point where the team is bad enough to draft Hunter and simple enough for him to play both sides of the ball.

Good point. My guess is they would play mostly man anyway with Gonzo on the other side so perhaps there wouldn’t be as much game planning as opposed to zone. But regardless…it would be dumb to play him on both sides in the same game.

How about D Trench? That's not working out either Ross.
Yeah the DL needs work, absolutely. But again signing Higgins doesn’t stop that and you’re not taking a DT at #2.

I’d hate to see him play both in the same game. I think that’s a recipe for disaster. He can play WR for an entire game and then switch to CB the next game if the matchup warrants it. But both in the same game is too much and he will break down.
He can do both in the same game if his coaching staff knows what they’re doing and coaches him well, but he would need to have a heavy focus on one vs the other. So either a full time CB who has package plays on offense (like Marcus Jones) or a full time WR who substitutes in on defense in specific situations (maybe like dime, 3rd and more than 10, 2 minute defense, etc)

He’ll get destroyed in no time at 190. I disagree.

At which point I’ll start criticizing him heavily for wasting resources.
Again, I agree with this conceptually, but it also doesn't make a ton of sense if we end up with more KJ Osbournes, which are decent players on value deals who don't actually do anything to help us win.

That said, we've also seen that free agency rarely helps a team win. Generally they have to get the best players through the draft.

He’s the same weight as Marcus Jones, should be able to hold up to 10ish defensive snaps a game.

The often banged up Marcus Jones who is on IR? Ok

I expect to have actual NFL tackles on the OL next season. As AVP is limited on what he can call due to the OL. But Hunter should be 90% on offense for sure.

I simply can't get enthusiastic about a thread like this for obvious reasons.

I agree with you conceptually, and if we were in the Bill/Brady era of spending to the cap every year, then every dollar needs to be allocated correctly. I just don't trust Wolf to take the $7 million you're proposing we save on Higgins and believing he'll spend it on capable defensive pieces. He'll probably go bargain hunting and get the wrong players.

I'd rather pay $32 million on the combination of Tee Higgins and Travis Hunter and worry about how that needs to adjust in 4 years when Hunter reaches the tail end of his rookie contract.

I don’t look at the $$$ that way. I look at the cap in terms of unit spending and internal salary cap. You can’t spend 70 million a season on 2 WR’s, you can afford a 1 and a 2, which is closer to 50 million per. So if you sign Higgins you can’t sign a #1. for the next 4-5 years because he’s getting the #1$$$.

I still think the best case scenario is to get the #2 pick, trade it for a 1st next year and a 2nd this year. Use the pick #5-6 on BPA, which would be Graham, Carter, MacMillan on most boards ( not mine), then trade back into the first with the surplus pick for the OT.

Free agency is going to really change how we look at the draft. How their needs are addressed there will shape draft strategy, so the better the needs are addressed prior to the draft the more flexibility they will have.

Does Marcus Jones play 10 defensive snaps a game or does he play significantly more than that?

This year. He’ll miss a total of 20 games so far in 3 years.
I really think this has more to do with the way he plays than his slight stature. He really is very explosive and runs with disregard in the punting game, and on offense.

Last year's injury was similar to Gonzalez's, torn pec.

He's on the field all the time. They always have 5 DBs out there, and he is frequently one of the 5. Always out there on 2nd and 3rd down.

Just as an example:

I’m not saying go get more low rent WR’s, I think SF will trade Deebo for a reasonable pick(4th), and throw in Bourne. Deebo’s deal should run out just as they are turning into an actual contender, which would free up another 25 million they could use at that point.
