We gotta go get him (Tee Higgins)

$35m is a lot, and I bet that's what he gets.

Signing him is like buying a boat. The two happiest days are when you buy it and when you sell it.

He’s a good #2 that wants #1 money.

This is a great method to suck.
so is when you don’t have a good number 2 cause we don’t spend the money we have for difference makers.

What would you do to fix the wr position?
Thanks to Mayo we don’t have an abundance of picks to use in a trade down from 1.

This is the price to play.
I’d happily give him 25 mill a season.

Unless we have something better to spend the money on, I'm okay spending it on Higgins. I'd rather overspend and have a decent enough WR1 than save the money and suck at WR and say, "Well at least we didn't overspend Kraft's money." That said, if there are better options, I'm all for that.

In general, I think spending top dollar for guys who aren't top players is a bad idea. That's not sustainable long term and leads to mediocrity.

That being said, I think this is a case where it might make sense as a strategically isolated incident. We're devoid of anything resembling top of the depth chart ability at WR. It's to the point that it's detrimental to the development of other players. Our receivers all lack confidence because we have a bunch of #3s and #4s (at best) being covered by #1 and #2 CBs. They're overmatched. The boxes are stacked and teams can blitz all they want so the OL is overmatched. The QB is always under duress with no one open. Playcallers are so limited in what they can do. It's such a succubus of negativity and feeling like ****. It's awful.

If you add a guy like Higgins, he's a threat outside the numbers and downfield that's going to open things up for others to some degree. He'll help make the run blocking easier up front if teams have to shade guys back at least some. He'll put our lesser receivers in more reasonable CB matchups. He'll make the QB reads a bit easier because at least there's something the defense has to anchor itself off of to some degree. It'll open up new playcalling opportunities.

If we sign Higgins to a top of the market deal I think it'd end up a bust on the face of it. BUT, I think there'd be some intangible value in how it helps develop other players that would make it worth it in an isolated splurge signing.

Until someone else puts another bona fide receiver, who has produced and isn't over the age of 30 in front of us as an option, you take the options that are available...

I don't care about the money... Let Kraft pony up... God knows he's saved hundreds of millions over the past two decades because TB took the home team discount and BB was stingy with the checkbook... Time to pay the piper... and if it means overpaying for a guy, then you do it...

My thinking is you're right on both counts, three if we count the boat
Higgins is going to get stupid money and I'm not comfortable he warrants it, he's not a proven WR1. Darius Slayton could probably be had for 2 years at what Higgins is going to get for one, leaving more cap space to be used elsewhere. He'd be my preferred target

I actually think it'd make sense to target both. Higgins opens up space for crossers underneath because he's a downfield threat at the X (despite a lack of speed himself - more of a body control, contested catch guy). Problem is, we have no speed at all to take advantage of that other than Douglas who's limited to lining up in the slot. Slayton adds that element of a guy who can be a Z receiver with speed.

Cut Bourne, sign Higgins and Slayton. Run a 4 man depth chart of HIggins/Slayton/Douglas/Boutte. Higgins is your every down X. Slayton is your primary Z that can also play the slot, allowing Douglas and Boutte to rotate in depending on matchups/schemes for that given week's gameplan.

Polk and Baker can be kept on the roster as developmental guys. Inactive on gameday unless/until they earn playing time. If you love someone in the draft you can take them, but you can also punt on adding new blood to the WR room this year if it feels like forcing it based on who's available.

Slayton fits that bill

Objectively, it's not the money Hiiggins is going to get that concerns me, Krafts' pockets are plenty deep enough and it's past time the lint got shaken out of them. My concern is with the % of the cap he's going to take up that might be better utilized elsewhere

He's probably the BPA that's under 30 and not named Higgins or Godwin. I'd kick the tires on Elijah Moore as well. 24 years old, been reasonably productive for chitty teams. He's probably the same as who is in the WR room already, but there's likely going to be a big change in personnel with this regime. Hopefully, anyway.

So much on FA WRs is can they keep up with JMcDs packages.

Elijah Moore seems a bit redundant with Douglas, whereas Slayton is more like a Bourne type. Slayton has also played in Daboll's offense which might have more transferability to McDaniels' system.

I really think Slayton is among the best FA fits for us. He doesn't address the desperate need for a #1 WR, but he does address the desperate need for more speed at WR overall. He's a guy I'd target early on in free agency and try to lock in a deal while other teams chase the higher ranked options. Just a really solid fit for us in our overall roster building, IMO.

Any of them play in offenses similar to McD's?
