OFFICIAL 2024 League Cutdown Day Discussion

Good OL coaches generally can create a unit that is better than the sum of parts, especially when having a consistent group out there. Hard to have any confidence at this point that Peters can accomplish that but we’ll see. They really couldn’t snag Popovich and promote him from his role with the Texans this offseason after the nefarious reasons he had to be dropped several years ago?
It never happens overnight.

When FA happened this year, I suggested getting Jonah Williams to at least play OT for a couple of years until we draft a stud in 2026 (Williams can plat LT or RT). I got ridiculed at the time by some, but now that he signed a 2 year deal for not horrible money, and considering what we have now, getting him would have provided anything better than we have at LT now and we'd still have a boatload of cap money. He's only in his mid 20's and was worth taking a shot at.

Jonah Williams was the WORST OT 2 years ago. He didn't really improve last year. So it's very VERY understandable why you were ridiculed. Pretending that you were some kind of savant by suggesting it really isn't the "Look at Me" Moment you think it is.

And if ypu look at the original post, I was commenting that the Pats OLine Coach is seriously lacking but you were more interested in yelping.

I read your original post. It's as asinine NOW as it was when you posted it. You're claims about Peters are ridiculous and you thinking that he's lacking shows that what's lacking is your knowledge of the game.

How far off the line was Okorafor.. If his head is at the hip of the OG, then no flag should be thrown.. That's been the NORM for a LONG time.

The "talking head" ref that they asked said that the foot needs to be at the belt line of the player next to them, not their head. Totally NOT the norm for a long time. Every penalty in that game has not been a penalty for many years, although I think it should have been one. What drove me crazy was that they did it 3 times. Once is bad. Twice is stupid. Thrice is ridiculous.

Have you watched our OL?

What's the over/under on how many players cut today end up on the Patriots' opening day roster?
My bet is 3 and at least 2 will be OL.

It used to be teams checked the Pats cut downs to feed their teams. How the mighty have fallen.....

Bill found some decent cut down day treasures. Most notably Woodhead.

There were many, many players better than the ones we have available in free agency. We are a 4 win team that got worse, the bar isn’t very high.

This idea that a terrible team should avoid free agency because none of those players are any good is ridiculous.
Do you advocate spending money on a FA OT that is at the end of his career and is probably not better than what we currently have?

They should back the brinks truck up to Dante's place and sign him as a "consultant"
I don't disagree, but at some point, they have to come up with a solution that isn't involving Dante.

The problem with finding an OT at this point is that the number of teams who have such a glut of talent at the position that they would be forced to cut one could be counted by someone who lost both their hands in a fireworks accident.

Last year we needed tackle depth after camp, and we got Wheatley and Lowe. That's the caliber we're talking about. Now, due to injuries, that may still be necessary. We need professional BODIES as much as we need a talent upgrade. So I definitely think they should be in the market, be it waivers or trades.

But as an aside to the above, if any of the veterans that are still available in free agency haven't been signed yet, despite the overall lack of tackle depth in the league, it should paint a giant BUYER BEWARE sign on their back. Individual NFL teams are stupid. The league as a whole is not so stupid as to leave a valuable tackle on the street through the entirety of the preseason.

The solution in 2024 is to survive. The real solution to OT comes in 2025.

True, but it is going to be difficult to accept now with the entire unplayed 2024 season staring us in the face.

I am all for picking up cut players to see if we can improve, but I don’t want to make knee jerk trades of our 2025 and later draft assets.

Oh yeah, they need to do SOMETHING. I'm just tempering my own expectations because barring a surprise blockbuster trade for Trent Williams there really isn't a savior out there. But bringing in some new blood is smart, because you never know who's going to respond well to Peters' system, and it sends a message to the team. For the good players it says they're not standing pat, and for the bad players it says "You're not safe just because we don't have anyone behind you."

Sounds like a Clancy novel.

Some Team gotta have a Quality Backup who can "Start": knowing where we are going to pick *Top 6* have to be appetizing for a Team. We should be thinking about at least a Fourth Rounder we also have a an extra Third For Judon we have Draft assets.

During the telecast they said the head has to on the belt line of the center. I think thats what was said. Someone please correct me if I am wrong

That's what I heard as well. It seemed like he was definitely off. Happening once I can understand, because it's a new emphasis and you want to kind of test where that line is. I think that's why we saw Onwenu get one as well. But once it's warned, and then called once, having it happen twice more for Chuks was inexcusable.

We could start by getting our 6 rounder back from minny for lowe.
