JC Jackson signs RFA tender

He can get more than that. Adore Jackson, who was a massive bust in Tennessee, somehow got $13M per year. Shaq Griffin just got $13.3M per year. William Jackson is at $13.5M per year. Trae Waynes is making $14M per year. The most overpaid CB is Byron Jones making $16M per year who is allergic to the football. Darious Slay is making close to $17 per year and is regressing.

Also, his teammate Jonathon Jones is making $7M per year. So you think JC is only worth $1-$3M more per season than him?
I know he possibly can - if he stays healthy and doesn't have a terrible year. But look what Butler just got after his abbreviated stint with the Titans. ACL tears happen all the time.

The Adore Jackson deal was just absurd.

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here. I'm always playing the longer game in my personal career - I wouldn't risk $30 million for $3 million on an injury. Jackson's still a kid at 25. He can do a 3-year deal, get all the money he'll ever need in the bank, and go for the "ego deal" next time, still in his prime. I'd want some serious guaranteed cash now, is all.

There's a HUGE difference between the $6million or so TOTAL he's made in 4 years and $30million on the deal I described. The difference between 30 and 39 is negligible, in terms of a person's life.

EDIT: Regarding Jon Jones...I think he's underrated here, and Jackson is overrated here. Don't get me wrong: JC Jackson is a really good #2 Corner. Really good, and yes, I think he's better than Jon Jones. But is he a true shutdown like Gilmore? There are only 16 corners in the league making more than $10million annually. So not just the number 1 corners, but the top half of the number 1 corners.

If I'm Jackson, it's too big a gamble, for me at least.

We'll see. If a CB is drafted, a Gilmore extension most likely doesn't happen.

Williams really should've never been drafted in the first place with a secondary already well stocked. I've hated this pick since 2019 and should've been a WR or TE.

At the time he was drafted Jackson was a udfa who played less than 400 snaps, Jones was a FA to be, Jmac was a 32 year old corner. We were not close to well stocked.

You’re not sure that Williams needs to stop hiding and step up?

Did Bill use a 2nd rounder on him so he barely plays?
Oh I agree he needs to step up. Just very unsure it'll happen. He's going into his third year and we still basically know nothing about him as an NFL player.

Yes to both.

JC though, I dunno... I like him, but I’d not be surprised if they move him. It’s so BB to trade him.
I think JC playing here in 2021 is 50/50. If hes playing hardball on a long-term deal and overestimating his value BB will ship him out.

Why? He's on the biggest contract year of his life, is still only 25 years old, and he's playing for $3.3million. A top-drawer 2nd CB for 3.3m? Sign me up.

His agent called all 31 teams - no takers.

Sometimes it’s necessary so you’re not caught in desperation when the need arises. Pats drafted Nate Solder in the first round when they were already set at the tackle spots (Light and Vollmer) and both were under contract beyond that season as well. Worked out because when Light left for retirement the next year, the team didn’t have to look far for his replacement because they already drafted him the year before. Realistically it’ll likely cost too much to keep both Gilmore and Jackson beyond this season, and the Pats don’t have an obvious replacement on the roster at the moment (Jones is a slot corner, Mills is more effective as a safety, and the jury is still out on Williams after two seasons).

Draft Jaycee Horn at 15 and not only do you have one of your starter spots locked up for next year, you also have your insurance policy in case extension talks hit a snag and Gilmore sits out games this season. Horn would still be involved this season as well, he’s not a guy they’d redshirt. This is a premium talent and not some reach like some of BB’s defensive backs in recent years.
Draft Horn and guarantee our starters for 2022? Who is the other starter?

I only said it would be one of the starters.

Granted it wouldn’t be a guarantee either, Horn would still has to prove he’s worth starting but I think the odds would be in his favor. I’m operating under the assumption that BB will try to keep one of Gilmore/Jackson as the 2022 starter. Otherwise your guess is as good as mine.

This is correct and key. JC did not look like a #1 corner in the Bills game when Gilmore was out. Sign Gilmore if his injury is OK, draft Horn at #15, and trade JC for a 3rd. Take a 2nd tier QB, like Mills, or a DT with the 3rd round pick.

LOL

I’d rather hang on to Jackson
If he will sign a reasonable 3 year deal. But I doubt he will, so we might as well get something for him. It would be great if he could be a ball hawking free safety, but I am not sure he is fast enough. D McC will not last forever.

They probably get a 4th, maybe a 3rd if they hang on to him now and let him walk when he's a real FA. Right now he's a solid and cheap starter on the team.

His salary for 2021 has been established. Teams were fearful of overpaying and also cap-constrained. Now they know.....and could be thinking the same as you. Maybe he is a nice add to a trade up or for Jimmy. Lots of possibilities.

Why? What’s to gain? He’s a clear starting corner this year and we are worse without him. We figure to get a comp 3rd any way so why give up a year of the guy playing for a contract at a cheap price? I see no chance he gets traded.

But a team trading for him only gets him for 1 year. Why would our starter be less valuable to us than to someone else?

Trade value for something bigger

He has a lot of value to us in 2021. Why dump a good starter at a cheap price? We won’t get anywhere near that in return.
