Stafford traded to Rams

Here's the situation. Goff had a stupid cap hit for a team that already has cap issues regardless. The Rams think Goff is holding them back and that McVay is just saving his ass by scripting plays and reading defenses for him. There is no doubt in my mind that McVay after 4 years decided that Goff wasn't going to improve and that they were going to lose games because he wasn't able to be competent. The Rams have not used a first round pick since they drafted Stafford. They view those as better trade capital. To an extent they are right. Only like 11-12 first round draft picks become Pro Bowlers, less All Pro level. So if you can guarantee a proven talent with that pick, might as well go for it in a trade. In this case, they also needed to unload Goff's cap it. So they sweetened the deal. They weren't going to use those picks anyways, they would have packaged them for someone else. Since they feel like they need a QB to get over the hump, why not?

Trading 7 first round picks for proven but expensive talent is a good move, provided the coach/GM are planning on bolting before the ensuing five-year period of losing. The Rams will be the worst franchise in football within a few years.

11-12 first round picks will become pro bowl players on the cheap for 5 full seasons. Those picks are incredibly valuable. What‘s the breakdown for the second round? Third round?

anyone else think the rams should have tried this exact offer except add another first rounder to just get Watson instead of Stafford? I don’t know if Houston would have accepted but it’s obvious the rams don’t care about first round picks

Baffling move.

I still wouldn’t put the Rams over the Bucs or the Packers (depending on who they lose) esp given that the Rams are still going to have to jettison some assets for cap relief. The move feels like they are overestimating what kind of team they have. They are not a team that’s just a “good” QB away, they are an “elite” QB away. This is what you pay for Rodgers not Stafford.

Unfortunately this sets the QB market price so high that I find it unlikely we will be able to find our new QB this year unless someone falls to us in the draft, which will be a crapshoot.

This is one of those rare trades that benefits neither team. The Rams do like making a splash though. I will give them that.

How does getting 3 picks, including 2 first not benefit the lions?

Goff is just the price they have to pay. This is a mega steal for them. And maybe next year they can get something for goff.

The lions essentially bought 3 picks and I **** with them hard for this. Great move.

100%

Am I having a fever dream right now? The Rams and Matthew Stafford are going to compete for a title? Much better chance of missing the postseason than even getting to the NFCCG next year.

the rams sort of remind me of the 2004-2007 yankees that just paid a ton for every single big name (most were way past their prime) and always flamed out

So as I understand it...

Detroit saves $14m on the cap as Stafford leaves but takes on a $13m cap charge from Goff, and gain multiple firsts. They move up to about $2m in cap space available for 2021...

LA loses multiple firsts and more, saves $13m on the cap from Goff leaving... but assumes a new $14m cap charge from Stafford... and we’re already $31m OVER the cap... so now they’re $32m over the cap... wow.
rams have now 22$ cap charge for goff. But if they had cut him he wouldve been 65$m or something ? is it true. They gave picks to reduce their cap charge.

The more I think about it the more I realize this was probably more like a 1st for Stafford, and then a 1st & a 3rd to get Detroit to assume Goff’s horrible contract.

I think that’s exactly what it is. Mathematically it appears Goff is being treated like a negative on LA’s end of the deal. But it’s still a great deal for Detroit if you’re only paying the base salaries. And someone told me the lions gm is the rams former head of college scouting so they are probably high on Goff too, even better. This makes me wonder what Watson’s trade will look like.

Stafford will be 33 on 2/7/21

He has been eating avocados or the Rams front office is on crack.

That D got carved up in the playoffs. Still way over the cap. I still like Seattle and the 49ers ahead of them when healthy.
The Seahawks defense is mediocre to terrible at times and Seattle doesnt have a 1st round pick in 2021 or 2022 from the Jamal Adams deal.

I guess McVay got tired of reading defenses for Goff

I don't think the price was too steep. Stafford is a much better QB, the Rams have a stacked offense - this could be the difference between superbowls - Goff wasn't gonna get it done.

People need to look at this as a 1st for stafford and a 1st and a 3rd to take on Goff's contract.

These types of trades happen in the NBA all the time. No one wants Goff and his albatross of a contract. So they have to give away capital just to get out of it

Huge overreach for Stafford yet somehow some of the pathetic b*tchers on this forum will say the Pats should have made it happen.
The thing is that is what it costs to acquire decent Qb talent. The Pats are not getting any legit Qb talent on the cheap. If we want someone we are going to have to pony up. Jimmy is not just going to come to us on a magic carpet because we drafted him 7 years ago. He will have suitors too and we will have to out bid and over pay to get him.

Taking Goff and his massive contact is a big lose for Detroit. He's not a good Qb and he just went from McVay to Campbell.

I doubt Detroit very much wants Goff. But it got them an extra 1st round pick and that's valuable.

NBA teams do this all the time. Take on bad contracts for draft capital.

The NFL has a hard cap though unlike the NBA and a much bigger roster obviously. You need quality players everywhere to win unlike the NBA where you just need a couple.

I had to read the trade twice just to make sure I was actually reading it correctly. Shocked at how much in return Detroit received. The Rams have a talented team, but still surprised. They obviously think they are a QB away from winning it all.
This is exactly the reason people who are down on BB don’t get it. Almost every other franchise - even the Rams who have had recent success - are willing to roll the dice and risk the future for that ONE championship... the Rams would gladly go 7-9 after a SB win.
