Here's the situation. Goff had a stupid cap hit for a team that already has cap issues regardless. The Rams think Goff is holding them back and that McVay is just saving his ass by scripting plays and reading defenses for him. There is no doubt in my mind that McVay after 4 years decided that Goff wasn't going to improve and that they were going to lose games because he wasn't able to be competent. The Rams have not used a first round pick since they drafted Stafford. They view those as better trade capital. To an extent they are right. Only like 11-12 first round draft picks become Pro Bowlers, less All Pro level. So if you can guarantee a proven talent with that pick, might as well go for it in a trade. In this case, they also needed to unload Goff's cap it. So they sweetened the deal. They weren't going to use those picks anyways, they would have packaged them for someone else. Since they feel like they need a QB to get over the hump, why not?
Trading 7 first round picks for proven but expensive talent is a good move, provided the coach/GM are planning on bolting before the ensuing five-year period of losing. The Rams will be the worst franchise in football within a few years.
11-12 first round picks will become pro bowl players on the cheap for 5 full seasons. Those picks are incredibly valuable. What‘s the breakdown for the second round? Third round?
