I guess that 2nd half rally against the New England backups was the tipping point.

Reports: Stafford now highest-paid player in NFL history

Stafford, 29, was set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. He is earning a total of $22 million this year, the last year of a three-year $53 million contract signed in 2013. Stafford’s new deal is worth $135 million over five years, $10 million more than the Raiders’ Derek Carr, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports. The contract includes $92 million guaranteed and $50 million signing bonuses, according to Schefter.

Lions, Matthew Stafford agree to 5-year contract extension; $27 million a year

Matthew Stafford’s deal is done, and the Detroit Lions quarterback is – for now, at least – the highest paid player in NFL history.

How Matthew Stafford became NFL's richest player, and why he isn't done

The contracts of Stafford and Carr show just how much leverage quarterbacks have over front offices. In the past, players often were graded in part by playoff success and wins. Carr has never played in a playoff game, and Stafford has never won a playoff game. This should help other quarterbacks in the future who have been unable to experience the success of a QB like Rodgers or Tom Brady.

Stafford's new contract also will keep him on pace to become the highest career earner in NFL history. He was one of the last two beneficiaries (Sam Bradford was the other) of the old CBA that gave rookies the ability to negotiate large contracts before stepping foot on the field. Stafford’s rookie contract paid him $72 million, which is more than double what the 2017 No. 1 pick earned. If Stafford plays out this next contract, which is likely given his age, he will have earned $262 million for his career.

While it's easy to laugh at, this is the reality in the NFL and something we've been completely insulated from with Tom.

Stafford may not be elite, but he's better than any QB that's going to make it to free agency or that the lions could probably get in the draft.

Crazy money though

He's not even

It's not gonna help them build a team.

We have seen two Great Players Quit that crap organization already nuff said!

Stafford is the type of QB you could maybe win with if you were getting him at a crazy discount (like minimum salary) so that you could spend max dollars on his entourage.

A 29 year old ? He should be "getting it" by now... stupid stupid move on their part.

Bob Quinn is an idiot. Nothing more to say here...

It's not all on Quinn.

I grew up in and around Detroit and lived there for 40 years. Since William Clay Ford bought the team on November 22, 1963 (really), ownership has pretty much been dictating decisions to their front office and coaches, regardless who their GM was (which is why I have some sympathy even for Matt Millen).

The NFL continues to reward mediocrity, in the absence of quarterbacks who can lead a team to and win the Superbowl..

Stafford 51 W's and 61 L's..(including playoffs)
Stafford 181 TD's and 108 int's...(inc. playoffs)

Compare to #12 208 W's and 61 L's...(including playoffs)
#12.. 519 TD's and 183 Int's... (inc. playoffs)

This is the equivalent of giving Al Horford $30m a year. He hasn't won anything. Hes not really in the discussion of best at his position but he's good enough and the market was right for him to cash in.

Like a government employee who gets hazard pay working in Afghanistan, Stafford too requires additional dollars to compel him to stay in Detroit

Reminds me of this one.

Kind of puts into perspective how desperate most teams are for a decent QB. I still think we could have gotten a pretty good haul for JG before he started stinking up the joint in preseason.
