All that being said I agree that Flowers would be the more impactful signing.
I feel the exact same way about him.Brown kind of scares me because he feels like one of those guys who might half ass things once he gets paid.
Left Tackle is a highly sought after position. If Solder could garner $15m a year last year, with a rising cap in 2019 Brown can likely expect a team to pony up a similar amount. Even if they don't someone will offer somewhere in the $12m+ range. I just don't see how we can offer that - especially as we drafted an OT in the first round last year who we aren't going to leave on the bench.
The only middle way is to trade/cut Cannon and re-sign Brown at about $12m.
By all accounts, Browns was very happy here in NE. Yes, he is going to get some big time offers, and at 25, he would be nuts to not take them. But unlike many NFL guys, who come into their first shot at FA, he has been on more than one team, so he does know that your experience varies greatly from team to team, so he might be willing to take slightly less to stay in NE. But if someone gives him a Solderlike contract, he would be crazy not to take it.
Bottomline is that either way this would be a great trade for the Pats, they trade the #95 pick for Brown and pick #143 (Ju'wan Bentley). If Brown leaves the Pats will most likely get around pick #99 back as a 2020 com pick.
Half assing is not his issue, dude does not believe in film study. He just thinks his technique and coaching is sufficient for any any opponents. I am surprised he did well under BB. His mantra is that opponents should rather watch him to beat him. It is a strange mindset for a Patriots player.Brown kind of scares me because he feels like one of those guys who might half ass things once he gets paid.
Assuming that Wynn is slated to play tackle, it makes sense to let brown walk and pick up a borderline starter/backup tackle for minimal money.
Brown is going to hit the jackpot in free agency - good for him, but not good for the Pats.
