    Resign both.
Or tag Brown and if you can't work out a long term deal a team will easily cough up a second for him.

I want this Oline to stay intact.
That's the reason we got the Superbowl.
The defensive line is the reason we won the Superbowl.
You resign Flowers I have no issue giving him 12 to 13 mill in this market.
    You can reign Shelton cheap.
You let Malcolm Brown chase his money.
You can find another Malcom Brown in the draft I don't think you can easily find another Flowers or Trent Brown.

Just a thought that occurred to me. If I'm not mistaken, the trend is that you put your most athletic OT on the left side to face the opposition's best pass rusher, and your road grader on the right side. So why not dump the contract of Cannon and Waddle to help pay for a close to market price for Brown. Get the uber-athletic Wynn ready to play LT, and move Brown to his old familiar spot at RT and develop your depth from the young guys and a top 6 draft pick.

Though I think it is more likely that the Pats see better see the flaws in Brown's game than we do and will let him take the big money elsewhere and hope that Wynn can be an upgrade in potential, and focus on paying Flowers something at least CLOSE to what he deserves. Most of the stuff I've seen has him being the 2nd best FA edge rusher available.

Because that is exactly the opposite of how BB has been operating. We are pretty much never top heavy and dump the middle class to afford the high end players.

    1. Marcus Cannon has been to 5 Superbowls and has 3 rings. An underrated story is whether Cannon is an underappreciated HOF caliber player.

    2. I thought Trent Brown was known as a LT. He came in with a rep as an elite pass protector and so-so run blocker, so a LT not RT.

    3. Would prefer they splurge to keep Trent Brown and Trey Flowers. Let Wynn battle with Thuney at LG and also to keep strong overall depth.

With an old Brady, a key will be an elite and deep OLine that both protects Brady but also is great at run blocking for RBs

I'm fine with Brown playing RT.

However, Cannon is well worth his $7.5M of new money (and $5M cap savings) to be the swing OT. Belichick may even carry Waddle as a 4th OT; his money will be minimal.

However, I can see signing Brown and trading Cannon. This would necessitate signing a top backup OT. Belichick has considered this important for a long time. I suspect that cost would be in the $5-$7.5M range, the same as Cannon; so I wouldn't do it.

Cannon's deal runs through 2021, and he gets about $6m per season. That's a very reasonable deal, though he's had injury and sickness issues. Thuney's deal runs through 2019. He'll then be demanding a pay raise. Wynn's deal runs through 2021.

So, the team is in a flexible enough economic position to do something like:

    1. Sign Brown to a deal.
    2. Use Wynn's 2019 season as an evaluation for both he and Thuney.
    3. Use 2020 as the year to decide on whether to bring Thuney back or plug Wynn in at guard.
    4. If the decision is to bring Thuney back, then the team could, assuming he worked at the position, move Wynn to tackle, full time, and either pay Cannon his reasonable salary or move on from him and look for a cheaper rotational/backup OT.

But, again, it would all come down to whether or not the two sides (Brown/Patriots) could find common ground for a contract.

Flaw in your argument right there. Championship teams don't leave things to "hope." If we lose Brown, it will be because we brought in another veteran to take over the LT position. NWIH Wynn breaks camp this year anywhere other than the bench. He'll get some snaps but he's gotta prove he's healthy before you can rely on him for anything at all.

I agree with all comments but one.

I believe that Cannon is worth $6M a year for 2020-2021 as a swing tackle. If a guard is injured for a few games, Wynn can move to guard and Cannon can play RT. The point is that a 6th starting OL is worth $6M a year.

I’m not sure that’s necessarily the case. Who is going to give up a second rounder to then have to pay him a major contract? That’s normally the kind of talk reserved for a top tier player, and I’m not as sure that Trent Brown is there just yet.

No one's giving up a 2nd rounder for brown. That's ludicrous.
Trent was our 5th best ol this year.
He played even decent for maybe 4 games all year, including playoffs.
You don't break the bank for that, especially considering the issues he brought with him.
But he played well in the playoffs, he's still young,he's a mountain and if he can continue his postseason play all year, he'd be a damn good lt.
Flowers is more valuable for 2 reasons: 1. He's a much better player
    2. Pats are strong on the ol and have a potential stud waiting the wings to take over lt.
If the price is right, keep him.
If some foolish team throws big $ at him...See ya.

Are we even sure that Brown is a better right tackle than Cannon?

No. Out of the 5 starting OL Brown was 5th to me.

    Fair enough.

The Pats had him rated at tackle. He played tackle at camp and in the preseason. Draftniks had him as a guard.

I’d welcome Brown back. I’m just skeptical on some of these market valuations of him considering the state of OL play across the league. He’s the #1 available OL in FA on numerous sites. I think we can confidently say BB & co. won’t pay Brown 14+ mil per year although I could be proven wrong.

Mike Reiss thinks Flowers, Gost will be back. Undecided on Gronk, as for Trent, Malcom Brown and Hogan he is leaning towards leaving.

He's not. I get that we're homers here and there's nothing wrong with that, but Marcus Cannon is nowhere near a HOF caliber player.

Re: Brown, he played himself out of a contract we can afford, which is good because that play was a big part of the reason why we won the Super Bowl. Looks like Belichick will have to work some more magic this offseason and conjure up another starter-caliber LT somewhere.

I could see signing Brown, and cutting Cannon and moving Wynn to RT until he looks ready for LT

But why would we cut Cannon who is a bargain starting RT at 6M/yr, and who is a 3-time Superbowl winner and been to 5 Superbowls.
