Same deal as usual folks. Stay on topic and keep your whining and *****ing outside of this thread. This is about X&O and pure football discussion and not about hot takes or a place to vent. That is what the Postgame Thread is for.

I created the thread early to add the snap counts and have a place where people can post the usual analysis tweets as they pop up.

Snaps (for future reference):

Good to see Cannon getting to the point where he is taking the majority of snaps at tackle. If this continues he should be close to 100% snap count next week.

Good for Cannon, not happy with the progression on Rivers. Can he not set the edge?

JCJ getting snaps was big, he did look like he was thinking more than playing but that’s to be expected.

I mentioned in regard to the first game, either in the game thread or post-game that this offense lacked an identity, and I think that's rearing its ugly head again, and especially last night. New parts, new roles, etc.

That being said, I'm not going to start sweating until after game 5. The return of Edelman and hopefully the integration of Gordon will shift the mismatches back into our favor, big time.

Last night, all you had to do was double Gronk between the numbers, bracket either Dorsett or Hogan, and the offense was shut down, just like that.

Didn't help that McD uncharacteristically called a crappy game. IIRC only one screen pass the entire game. Screen passes and quick outs would have defeated the aggressive D line Detroit was bringing against us.

Also, I don't think we should rule out the psychological effect of a superbowl hangover. This is the 2nd sloppy, flat game in a row we've seen from this team. They came out just flat. No pep, no energy.

Numbers show Shelton is the biggest culprit on the dline. Non existent pressure up the middle as well as failing at the main thing we brought him in as, a run stuffer.

And...

One run stuff on the season for Shelton is not getting it done.

The LB coverage stats are weird.

I don't quite understand how the raw stats mesh with how our LBs are supposedly being exploited in coverage by QBs. It looks like 80 total yards no TDs and 2 INTs against HT, KVN, Bentley and Roberts which actually is borderline good compared to last year.

That is unless Howe is somehow not attributing coverages correctly. Would be interesting to know how many first downs each has given up.

When watching games I notice that our LB'ers are in a shallow zone and the QB is going over their heads between the LB and the DB. Or the QB is targeting a guy running across the formation who is being trailed by a DB. So, I'd say Howe isn't attributing coverages exactly correct (i.e. zones vs. man responsibilities).

Is there a possibility that the OL is tipping the play to the opponents defense?

Some Lazar stuff is getting out..

Hightower actually sheds his block perfectly in time to get to the RB. But somehow then does not. I don't know if the camera angle is making him appear closer to the RB than he was in reality.

I mean this is the kind of evening it was. Mason who is an elite run blocker gets blown up by Dunkin RJF on a big third down.

We can talk about missing talent and draft picks all we want but if players can't even get their fundamentals correct then none of this stuff matters.

Garbage like this is just inexcusable. Again this has nothing to do with talent. The entire discussion whether we enough talent or not is completely pointless if we can't get basic things like this right.

I mean are you kidding me ? How does Jones get those 11 additional yards after the catch ?

What the hell ?

Just got outta work & about to look at whats out there & jotted a few things down but said this last

This isn't rocket science. Those complaining about the creativity or play call calling are missing the point to say the least. From play calling to route running its going to effect the team. In regards to route running people also need to understand that coaches don't go into a game saying we're going to run these routes to beat these defenders. Defenders have strengths & weaknesses but NE in particular attack space from different formations.

We're missing those paper cuts that keep the chains moving, can beat press & set tempo. 11 will help but we need Gordon to be that big body along the sidelines.

As for the OL I'm not worried about pp as much as the run blocking. Its been poor anyway you look at it.

DL is another story. Teams have been controlling the A-B gap way too easy. At times their effectively doubling one our DT's & peeling off to get to a LB. Teams are having their way on the los & getting to the 2nd level. Last night we were either too slow(DT) or too small (LB's) to get off our blocks in other words.

A lot of this is being coached up by Patricia, knowing exactly what the weaknesses are on our O-line, and what they are good and not good at handling. Mason is done once he's lost his leverage.

This clip is just... gross.

Wow, this was worse than I thought...can't blame Sony on this one.

It seems we played an awful lot of 3 lbs with only 3 DL
I think we always have trouble when we go small, like the infamous 4 safety d.
I’d be interested to see how much of the run d struggle was from 3-3 vs 4-2.
I also think nickel base is much harder when you don’t have a db out there like Chung who can impact the run d. None of the other safeties do.

You don’t coach “beat the crap out of your man straight up one in one”
