A point I made yesterday about the position is that we have to figure out something. A rotation, pairings etc bc it's the strength of the defense & we're not getting anything up the middle. Bortles was able to step up w/out consequence yesterday.

Absolutely. The lack of an interior rush is more costly than whatever happens on the edges. I'd start with moving HT to the edge and Flowers inside. But then again thats a kneejerk idea so most probably not the most insightful.

Watch the D line in those clips. Nink talks about it all the time. Win your 1 on 1 battles. In all those clips, I see our D lineman getting stonewalled at the line of scrimmage. None of them showing anything that would resemble an athletic pass rushing move to beat his man. No pressure = easy day for the QB. Time to think about going after speed and athleticsm on the D line instead of sheer mass and size. The game is faster now, we need speed.

And none of our interior D lineman have been able to win 1 on 1 battles enough to be double teamed...we really miss that interior D lineman who can take up 2 blockers at once.

Malcolm Brown just hasn’t developed into the player I thought he would be

I wonder how many of the geniuses in the GDT realized that Waddle wrecked that play when they complained about the playcall.

That fraction of a second Dorsett lost by having to run around Waddle is another potential TD because CP was in position for downfield blocking.

That play was DOA. The Jaguars defender sat and diagnosed that play perfectly, didn't overpursue and was right where he needed to be. The only thing that would have saved the play is if whoever was tight right ( I think Hogan, but can't tell) had chipped the Jaguar defender on the way out and given some running room.

Really excited about Sony - I appreciated his second efforts.
In general, considering they were in the game until mid 4th - that is much better than I thought it would go based on the first half into the 3rd. Let's hope this is the requisite early season "bad loss".

How about we take an over/under bet on the number of games before Hightower makes a significant play. We'll set it at 6.5.

He was the slowest guy on the field yesterday. It was painful to watch.

Yep. But like I said last week and this week again. I will give players until the end of week 4 before starting to get concerned about things like players losing steps ect.

September remains an extension of the preseason for me where many players still getting used to game speed and work on their conditioning.

I rewatched the game and it wasn't as bad I thought it would be. Little things that just really added up. Edge pressure was decent and I expect to be better with Flowers but there was absolutely zero push from the interior. Absolutely none. I'm starting to have serious problems with Adam Butler. He serves no purpose. Half the time he is on the ground and he is a pass rush specialist that rarely sniffs the qb. This wasn't an especially bad game for him but this is the type of game we will have in the future and some sort of push up the gut from anyone is necessary.

Missed tackles was big in this one starting with Bentley's massive whiff. Two yard dump offs to backs went for big gains even when defenders were in great position to make a quick tackle.

We all know Rowe had a rough outing, but the second biggest culprit imo was Van Noy. It is hard to realize at first because he seems to have the necessary speed but many big plays happened because Bortles seemed to attack the zones he was covering. Van Noy was also late in covering the back. These are the type of plays that Jamie Collins shined at and would come up with timely interceptions.

The Jags final td score was horrible in all sorts of ways. No one even covered the guy. Jags were also illegally blocking downfield on Gilmore. Maybe the heat is the reason why no one had any fight in them to get the receiver down. idk.

If I was in charge, I would like to see how a game would play out if Rowe, Van Noy, and Butler rode the bench. I would also drop our defensive ends into the coverage more often. I think it would dissuade quarterbacks from constantly throwing to backs and those long developing crossing plays we struggle with.

Maybe it's because I live here, but I didn't think it was as hot as the pre-game temps were said to be. There were storms right outside of the stadium and there was pretty significant cloud cover for most of the game. Then again, I wasn't on the field running full speed either.

This one is easy, I think. Butler got blocked inside and Clayborn got blocked outside. Though he does good work, Lazar might be overthinking this.

The more snippets of film I see the more I am convinced that Jacksonville just won most of the battles on Sunday.

I bet you were sweating just being in the stands, which probably wasn't hard on your body, but when you throw strenuous physical activity and wearing equipment into the equation, I'd imagine that things get lopsided pretty quick.

Actually, I wasn't. I was pretty comfortable. I've been to games down here where my shirt was completely drenched in sweat. Enough so that you could wring it out after the game. This wasn't one of them. Rain drops actually fell from the sky throughout long parts of that game.

He is correct. Bentley is the spy and bites too hard and overcommits to the weakside. You can see him try to reverse direction but it's too late.

That's odd. I guess the team must have just not shown up to play.
