Duke understanding he has big job ahead early..

Rookie Duke Dawson feels like little brother in starting defensive backfield

“The film room is your classroom, I’m always in there studying film. Even when I’m in my hotel room, I’m always in there looking at stuff. The little things that I did wrong, I try to improve coming out the next day. From seeing myself in the spring to now, I see a big improvement. Studying film, I feel comfortable making calls and communicating with everyone. I’m just starting to feel like myself.”

Thanks to everyone who posts in these threads with TC updates! Nice to get observations coming in fast both from people in attendance as well as the armchair QBs.

Glad we didn't bomb another 2nd on a DB

leftovers from Blogservations:

Another wake up call not to sleep on Keionta Davis!
--Bill Belichick spent some time talking one-on-one with defensive lineman Keionta Davis during the pre-practice team installation work. Davis spent his rookie season on NFI, but has been getting reserve reps on the defensive line and may be a name to keep an eye on. The 6-4, 280-pounder certainly looks the part of a guy with an NFL future based purely on his build.

--Will Tye had a nice one-handed catch working with the quarterbacks against air early in practice. The returning practice squader has caught the ball well so far this summer.

Pacing the Patterson WR hype..
--Eric Rowe put the clamps on Cordarrelle Patterson who continues to struggle to create separation on his routes. The newcomer has caught the ball very well, including a one-handed grab for a completion against Jason McCourty, but he rarely seems to open up much space between himself and the coverage.

--Jason McCourty got verbal praise and a high-five from O’Shea after putting the clamps on Devin Lucien as he tried to get off the line. O’Shea congratulated Ryan Lewis for a similar effort later. You don’t see assistant coaches show such open praise for opposing players too often in practice.

2-minute drill sub D:
--During a two-minute or end-of-game segment the sub defense had Deatrich Wise, Adam Butler, Trey Flowers and Clayborn from left to right on the line with Van Noy and Hightower at linebacker. The secondary included Gilmore, Rowe and Dawson at corner with McCourty and Harmon at safety. Some other sub looks had Chung swapped in for Dawson in a three-safety package that’s been common the last couple seasons.

Andrews quietly having a strong camp. His contract is up there for bargain of NFL..
--The offensive and defensive lineman did their own one-on-one battles. One of the more notable takeaways from the action was undersized center David Andrews holding his own in two matchups with oversized defensive tackle Danny Shelton.
--Isaiah Wynn was beaten by a good bull rush from Clayborn.

--Brady connected with Jacob Hollister crossing the field early on in the very competitive seven-on-seven session. The second-year tight end continues to catch the ball very well and looks smooth and comfortable in his route running.

Tommy celebrating last day of 40
--Brady did pushups after the one-on-ones, not something you see too often from the 41-year-old.

INJ NEWS: Theaker might be back sooner than he thought..
--Ulrick John stayed down on one knee after one rep, seemingly grabbing at his lower leg or foot. But he continued to practice. Backup lineman Jason King spent time in the middle of the field with the medical staff late in practice. It appeared that they were looking at his left knee. He did not return to action.

More @ Day 7 Blogservations: Role reversal fun in Foxborough

Yeah, good point. Belichick did a nice job of playing to his strengths and helping to mask his weaknesses upon his return, which is one of the reasons why he’s succeeded in his role.

Unfortunately, none of the previous talk about playing CB (well), returning punts, or running gadget plays ever really panned out. I don’t think he ended up being quite as speedy and shifty as initially advertised.

Interestingly, the pre-draft measureables for Chung, Richards and Pleasant are nearly identical across the board. The differences are:
--- Pleasant's 10yd split is significantly slower than the other two (1.68 v 1.56/1.58)
--- Richards' bench reps are significantly lower than the other two (13 v. 22/25)
--- Richards' 3-cone is significantly faster (6.74 v 7.11/7.12)

Then why does Richards look the slowest?

That looks legit!

Being able to kick Flowers back inside and having High at LB and the pass rush should actually give teams fear again.

from Callahan:

  • Speaking of Dorsett, he also saved two passes over the middle that initially appeared well-defended: first cutting in front of Jason McCourty and later securing a low throw with Eric Rowe draped all over his back. When he managed a clean release Thursday, Dorsett typically found success.
  • Trailing in coverage, backup safety Damarius Travis knocked the ball away from Gronkowski after the tight end had secured a seam-route reception in 11-on-11 work.

  • McCarron worked extensively with the first-team offense, even in occasional two-receiver sets with Chris Hogan. There was some good (sharp routes, a couple Brady targets) and bad (one drop and getting yelled at by Brady on a separate play), just as you'd expect from a young player. For now, McCarron holds as high-quality an opportunity he could've asked for at the start of camp, considering the injured wideouts around him and the edge he appears to have over fellow youngster Braxton Berrios.

Don't like hearing this:

  • Something doesn't appear to be quite right with linebacker Dont'a Hightower, who has been a participant at every practice. Seems a tad slow.

Then why does Richards look the slowest?

Slow processing speed and terrible angles makes his playing speed far slower. Which is unfortunate because BB supposedly drafted him as high as he did because of his high football IQ.

So another good player Bill isn’t going to pay?

We are barely a week into camp and some people here have already anointed Brown an elite LT even though he has not played a single meaningful snap yet.

And whats even more crazy you guys are also already calling out the front office for not resigning that player even though it needs two to dance and a player in his position would be a moron to not try to make a gigantic contract in FA in 6 months. He has zero incentives to sign something now unless it is crazy money. Take out an insurance against serious injuries and then just wait it out.

And finally the team just drafted what they think will be a longterm LT a few months ago in the middle of the first round.

Your criticism is absurd.

Not ideal for sure, but I think we've been a bit spoiled by how Edelman has supposedly looked. I think it's normal for a player to look a bit slow coming back from an injury the next year. What Edelman is doing is the exception.
