ICYMI: Patriots Name Five Team Captains For 2021 Season
Greg M. Cooper - USA TODAY Sports
On Wednesday, the New England Patriots announced their five team captains heading into the 2021 season following an annual vote by the players.
The five veterans chosen for this season are as followed:
-C David Andrews
-LB Dont’a Hightower
-S Devin McCourty
-WR/ST Matthew Slater
-RB James White
The list of players is far from surprising as all five have been named captains previously, with four also earning the honor last season. Linebacker Dont’a Hightower was a captain in 2019 before opting out in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns.
2021 marks the 11th straight season both Matthew Slater and Devin McCourty have been named team captains.
“We’ve been very fortunate,” Head Coach Bill Belichick said earlier this week in regards to the captain selections. “We’ve had a lot of good leaders on the team. Captains are certainly a part of that, but there’s a lot of other leadership that comes on the team in addition to whoever the captains are.”
