The Patriots reached the midweek point of the second week of training camp, but unlike the first two days, intensity took a step back as the players reverted to shells and shorts with no padding. For most of the morning session, 11-on-11 drills were the primary focus despite the no contact.
“We’ll be in shells and try to clean up a few things from the last couple of days that need to be worked out and get back at it,” Belichick explained at his morning press conference. When asked what he wanted to work through, Belichick replied, “Everything. Just a lot of communication, techniques, adjustments.”
Absent from practice were tight Dalton Keene and cornerback Malcolm Butler.
On offense, quarterback Mac Jones bounced back after struggles to begin the week. He completed 15/17 passes, beginning with 12 in a row. Bailey Zappe went 19/25 on the day.
Kristian Wilkerson hauled in a 30-yard pass from Zappe despite tight coverage from Shaun Wade down the sideline. He had a team-high six receptions across both 7-on-7s and 11-on-11s. Jakobi Meyers also put together a solid morning, logging four receptions on four targets. The offense also attempted to run a few trick plays with the two quarterbacks, but they were unsuccessful.
As for the defense, Jalen Mills and Adrian Phillips, each recorded pass breakups and Terrance Mitchell hauled in an interception.
Lastly, the special teams unit worked on punts with Marcus Jones, Myles Bryant, and Tre Nixon as returners.
