Draft Rumors

As long as Brady is our qb, you can forget about us being a power running team. Outside of the Dillon year in 04, we only favored the run in 08 under Cassel. The offense under Cassel was balanced and pretty good by the end of the year, but as Brady came back in 09 it was immediately scrapped for the pass happy offense we have seen for the last decade.

i honestly thought we were going to be a run first team in Tom’s later years but it has been the complete opposite.

I get it that we have a need at OT but that would piss me off. Huge overpay. Just last year it was considered a win for cleveland to even get a 5th rounder for Erving. Now if we’re considering a day 3 pick for him that’s another story.

Plus we’d only have him for 1 season, 2 if you pick up the 5th year option over drafting OT at 31 with at least 4 years team control at a much cheaper price.

You’re right. He needs work. He went from bad to mediocre at KC. He lunges, has meh footwork and isn’t a read blocker. DS would have to remake him.

Cam Erving from the Chiefs?

For the #31, it seems like the Pats would be receiving a mid-round pick in addition to the player. Perhaps one of KC's two 4th rounders?

Given that KC traded a 5 for him just last year, I hope not.

Exactly. He plays with good effort but there’s a lot to be desired from a mechanics standpoint. Not sure how he tested at the combine but to me he gets overpowed a lot. He’s definitely a project which is kinda scary since he’s going on year 4.

Yeah. I was just offering a wilda$$ guess in response to the wilda$$ rumor that @Ochmed Jones thinks he heard on BSPN.

Devil's advocate arguments (for this extremely hypothetical trade)...

IF the Pats perceive their own LT situation as more desperate than even we do, AND they have Erving graded out significantly higher than any of the in-house LT candidates and higher than any of the OT prospects in this draft (at least in terms of being an immediate stater), then I could see some kind of trade happening.

At the moment, KC doesn't pick until #54 in the 2nd round. Perhaps their deal is actually trading their 2019 1st-rounder for the Pats 2018 #31 and throwing Erving in to sweeten the deal?

Erving is under contract for $1.72M in 2018 (fully-guaranteed, but cheap). His 5th-year option salary would be $9.63M and I don't see that happening at all. OTOH, he's now "struck out" with two teams, so he may be amenable to signing a much, much cheaper extension at the moment.

So ...

The Pats trade the #31 for KC's 2019 1st-rounder and acquire Erving in the process at $1.72M for 2018. Then they also draft an OT prospect somewhere along the line who they're confident they can develop into the 2019 starter (there may well not be much difference in potential between the OT prospects available at #31 and, later, at #63 - in the Pats view).

If Erving looks good (which is entirely possible given not only Scar's tutelage, but the potential difference in blocking schemes), then the Pats extend him, cheaply. If he's just barely adequate (or worse), maybe they extend him at backup money. If he faceplants, they're merely out the $1.72M "insurance premium".

IMO we are moving to a power running team

Based on what tangible evidence?

Anyway, most of the OL prospects the Pats have acquired over the years have been better run-blockers than pass-blockers when drafted. Scar's training and Brady's quick release have allowed them to do that.

Listening to ESPN radio and I think they said they thought New England had a trade worked out with a team - #31 for a current left tackle.

But they did not name the player or the team.

Good thing ESPN hasn't been known to speak out of its ass or anything.... ;)

Could happen of course, but they have as much credibility as Roger Goodell does to me.

He actually tested well at his Combine. He's almost identical to Croston, size-wise (6054/313), put up 30 reps (with 34" arms), and posted jumps and agility-drill numbers as good as Shaq Mason's.

Mechanics/footwork/technique may be fixable by Scar when no one else could.

EDIT: Corrected my typo on Erving's weight. It's 313 not 131.

Dyslexic typing fingers.

There are many who disagree with your assessment and think he'll go in the 2nd round.

Oh really? In regards to what, his arm strength? Show me any sequences on film that make you think he is capable of making nfl throws...

Let’s face it, you love him because he’s “smart” and acts like a “boy scout”

But have you seen his noodle arm in display?

Again, just speculating about an extremely vague rumor from BSPN.

As I suggested in an earlier post, it could be KC trading their 2019-1st for the Pats #31 and throwing in Erving to "sweeten" the deal, a la Jonathan Cooper from ARZ in the Chandler Jones trade.

I wouldn't put it past the numbskulls at BSPN to float this as the Pats trading the #31 for Erving.

When people said Lamar Jackson wasn't a fit (even tho he ran EP variations among many other pro reads) I brought up this up. Laulletta would most likely have to run a west coastish type O w/ a heavy ground game. He ran the rpo in college. Think Alex Smith. Even Raiders O from the past few years in terms of safe calculated shots down field.

Lauletta is a smart guy and extremely determined, I think they could mesh and meet somewhere in the middle

Alex Smith is a good comparison...except Smith is better than Lauletta. And even if Lauletta were to reach to to a smith level play....does anyone seriously think smith is good enough to win a Super Bowl?

Lauletta would never be good enough to win us a Super Bowl...he would be a complete game manager QB, who would need an elite D to win a Super Bowl..which we don’t have

My advice.go get the QBs who can win games by himself

With those numbers it has to be mechanics. I saw a play when he was with Cleveland where the DL basically blasted him all the way back to the rb who barely had time to receive the Handoff in a shotgun formation.

Speaking of the Pats trading for an OT ... this (rumor) just in ....

Yet another 1st-round OT from 2015 who hasn't done so well in the NFL. Drafted #9 overall.

My neighbor (originally from Mass and a pats fan) and I were talking this morning. He said he heard Brady and Gronk for all of Cleveland's picks? Does that count as an "official rumor"

I was just thinking the same thing, but not for an early/mid round pick. Even better if he’s cut.

No way Indy trades with NE...ever...unless it’s for a King’s ransom.

Peter King? I wouldn't give up a warm bucket of spit. Let'm rot in'is cell.
