The O-Line’s performance against Atlanta in SB

I have a different take.
I'm not so sure Atlantas scheme worked as I am that early in the game players made plays.
It's not like our offense was inept. We moved the ball fine but just had inevitable bad play to short circuit drives.

If Blount doesn't fumble, the OL holds up in 2 3rd down sacks, and Brady and reads the coverage right on the pick 6 and hit so a wide open Edelman coming out of the bunch instead of forcing in to an expected to be open amendola this is close game maybe even patriots are up at half time.
What changed was the the patriots eliminated bad drive killing plays and couldn't be stopped.
Following up my last post, if Brady had read that properly, the INT would have instead went for a big gain if not for 6. Edelman broke wide open on that play.

By play design and defensive appearance amendola should be the target.
One time Brady didn't have the answers before the test.

We won the SB. We couldn't do any more than win the SB

If you want to assess players as to how they will play in 2017 and going forward, how they will fit together, what strengths will overcome what weaknesses that is fine.

But rehashing the play in the SB, calling it embarrassing, unacceptable etc is ludicrous. Every player played well enough to win the SB because we win the SB. There is nothing to critique about that game.

Yes, but I think it's fair game to call out a player if you think their performance last year will carry over into 2017. No team is perfect.

I think their running back unit is going to be much better this season and that will really help the overall performance of their OL. The times their OL struggled most was when they couldn't get their results being game going, and adding Gillislee and Burkhead and a fully healthy Dion Lewis and much improved James White is going to force defenses to play them straight up, and that always favors the OL..

IMHO one problem in the last few years is that if Blount was in, the defense knew the play was likely a run, and if White was in, the defense knew it was likely a pass, and that lack of deception really aided the defense, particularly for good defenses like Atlanta or Houston.

This year I am excited over the possibility that this year we will have running backs that can be effective in either run or pass, so that there is no "tipping off" whether it is a run or pass play. From what I have read, both Gillislee and Burkhead are versatile at running, catching passes, and pass blocking. James White seems to have improved his running, and he is already effective the passing game. And, if Lewis is fully healed, perhaps he can be a weapon in both the running game and passing game also (although I hope they keep him on a strict pitch count so he is healthy for the post-season).

I've been expecting the Patriots to emphasize the running game more for years now, I hope this coming year is the year when the offense is even more devastating because of deception on whether a run or a pass play is coming. When you add the speed of Cooks, watch out! :)

Agree completely, and it became really obvious whennBlount would or would not be effective, and when he wasn't defenses knew they were going to throw all day, and they teed off as a result.

Gillislee doesn't have much film on him catching out of the backfield but the Pats have definitely been working on it. That would be an amazing new offensive dynamic for the exact reason you mentioned.

Very true. Quinn threw a huge curve ball at them and it worked for two quarters. Lots of pressure and new looks. Thankfully they figured it out in the end.

Can't say I'm disappointed with the first half because without it we not be able to discuss the Greatest Comeback in NFL history. Watching mediots and their ilk forced to admit that Brady is the GOAT afterwards was well worth the one half of suffering.

BTW: Great football based posting from you Kontra. Thanks. Have enjoyed reading your perspective. Wish you would do it more or have I not been paying attention?

I'm trying to get back into in-season mode. There's not really any point to breaking down X's and O's during the offseason unless the football talk really pulls me in. You'll see more X's and O's type posts as we get into the season. In the offseason, I'm more interested in making poop jokes. Thanks for the compliment, though, man. Looking forward to your film breakdowns too.

So I assume y'all's training diet must be heavy on raw onions......
....gotta get those tear ducts whipped into shape.

Did you mean to quote my post, nanceyboy?

You should watch more of him, then. He was a second year player that began to grow into his role. Comparing him to Reggie White is extreme hyperbole. He also two gaps quite a bit in Atlanta's defense so expecting him to be a sack machine during the regular season is disingenuous at best.

I just noticed it was different o-lineman failing on critical plays. Mason getting pushed back into Brady hurt on the play action fake. Edelman was coming open. Then on that 3rd and long after the sack and imcompletion Grady Jarret stunted and when all they way around and Cannon was too late to pick him up. Either Cannon needed to react quicker to it, or Andrews, Mason and Cannon need to do a better job working together. It caused Brady to move off his spot when Amendola was open for close to a 1st down.(would have been one I think)

Just a few plays I remember from the 1st half.

Shaq Mason was actually the player with which I was most upset. He struggled and in some key moments. Stunting seems to be something that Scar-coached lines still seem to struggle with a bit. That would be the only thing I worry about.

But alas, we won the SB and as long as Scar is at the helm, I really don't feel overly concerned. A healthy team and good OL play puts the Pats in great shape to repeat.

are you new here ? :D

Haha, I don't mind discussing certain players' performances like andrews or mason, but you know it's bad when some folks are criticizing Brady's reading a particular play in a game they won.

They have white and lewis to catch out of the backfield.

All OLs struggle against well executed and timed stunts. The Patriots are no exception. When you're playing Atlanta, the defense with the most speed in the NFL from the defensive front to the safety group, it's that much more effective.
