The Steelers just laid out big money for Bell and Brown, I seriously doubt they are going to throw big money and their first for Butler.
Have the steelers ever spent big on a corner?

That was not a report it was a guess.

There really isn't a lot to worry about. How many 1st round RFAs have ever been signed away?
Why sign a guy who costs you your first round pick if you can just sign the next best guy and give up nothing?
Butler isn't that much better that he is worth more money and a #1.
But if you think he is wait a year and sign him so you keep your 1.

If you have a pick in the high 20s, what's the difference between that an Butler? Also, the screw the Pats aspect is very underrated.

You improve your team, and hurt them.

I am sure Bill would like to keep Butler but would be fine with getting five years of a #1 pick over one year of Butler before he becomes a UFA. Most likely, though, he won't get an offer sheet to sign.

You are kidding right?
You want to pay 15 mill a year and give up your pick when you can sign someone else and keep your puck?
That is why it's never done. It's crazy.

And no teams aren't out to make bad decisions in order to screw the pats.

I actually think he gets extended.

The real danger of letting him in the RFA market is he will know what he can expect next year so resigning him during the season will be harder.

Hopefully it works out but we can win with him and we can win without him.

Remember Curtis Martin? Jets didn't want to screw the Pats did they?

I don't know about 15 mil but butler has never seen big money before so he can settle for 12 to 13 million.

No. parcells wanted the player. Turned out to be a good move.
He put in a poison pill to make sure the offer couldn't be matched becuz he wanted the player not becuz he wanted to screw the pats.

If the Pats lose Butler, then his replacement is working at Popeye's somewhere and has no idea what he is about to experience.

Why would he settle for less than he can get. 15 mill is roughly the tag number so anyone thinking he is worth pissing away a first for would have to think he is worth top 5 corner money.

So some team ponies up decent money, but not top of the market (because of the 1st-rounder involved) and the Pats simply match the offer.

If somebody goes crazy for Butler and hits at 15-16 aav, it would almost certainly be a team with a good pick (that's why they have good picks, lol).

I am hoping butler stays with the pats but drafting a corner's a must in this draft.

This is the worst part of the year for me as a pats fan. No, it's not what the pats may or may not do, it's reading all of the doom and gloom posts about what might or might not happen. If 5 Super Bowl wins isn't enough to stand behind these guys, nothing ever will for some people.

Yo so just FYI, Parcells was not a great GM and loved overpaying for former players. Source: David Meggett.

Exception that proves the rule, being the point.

The Rams are supposedly in talks with multiple teams interested in franchise player Trumaine Johnson who just got tagged at 17M...One of the teams being Cleveland. If he is traded a haul of draft picks are expected.

While the situation is a little different, giving up a first for Butler and signing him to 14m a year is basically the same thing. Top corners are premium pieces.

I would imagine if you look deeper, that most of the increase is going to the top 5 or so players per team, or 150 or so in the league.
The other side is the franchise tag number which has escalated a ton. I will try to find that.

Except that not applicable when an organization places greater emphasis on quality depth and situational football.

Harmon has made big plays also.

It doesn't matter because the DB talent is so deep this year.

What helps Harmon is the fact the last several years have been terrible for safeties.

Lol. Cleveland. Johnson didn't even have that much of a good year. He struggled at times.
