The Patriots Should Not Trade Jimmy Garoppolo This Offseason

Russ Goldman

There has been much talk on social media, and in the press regarding the potential for the Patriots to trade Jimmy Garoppolo now, because his value could be very high with several teams potentially needing a quarterback. I understand the talk regarding th

Nope. With a weak QB draft class you have to trade him this year. You get virtually nothing for letting him walk at the end of the year. He does you no good sitting on the bench when he could potentially get you a first or at least a high second and another pick.

This is the absolute best time to trade Jimmy G. The market is weak and his value is high.

It's also never been more important for this franchise to have strong depth at the quarterback position. Our franchise star and all time greatest QB is aging and doesn't have a lot left to prove. He could be gone in any given year depending on how things go.

Just saying, trading Garroppolo right now is not a slam dunk. You are sacrificing a depth option that with only just a little bit of bad luck at the wrong time could be the key to saving the season next year.

It is a tough call. At some point Brady will be done. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest it will be in the next 12 months.
This whole idea though, of keeping him in case, then tagging and trading is being glossed over without recognizing the problems.
1) He has more value today than he will under the tag. A team getting him now can see what he does in 17, with the option of tagging him. He is very unproven, and if he sits another year on the bench are you really excited to trade for a guy with a 20mill salary who played 6 quarters in 4 years?
2) What if something happens to Brady in 2017? Then you have Jimmy G on his last year of his contract, ready to hold you hostage in negotiations. Doesn't sound like a Patriot scenario, and it could lead to him walking any way.
3) This could be an important year to load up on picks. We will probably have more roster turnover than we have had in many years, with all of the free agents we have, and the cap space. If the talk is true that we could get a mid to high first rounder, BB could probably parlay that into 3 picks in the top 100, to go with 4 we already have. That is a huge infusion of talent, for cheap, to balance out the high price we will pay to keep our own, and/or sign FAs.
4) Given #3, as of the first day of the 2018 season, will we have enough cap space to absorb the 20+ mill franchise tender we need to give him to turn around and trade him?

Maybe and maybe not. I don't feel a need to trade him for peanuts but with decent value sure. It depends of course how much you believe in Brady to play into his 40s.

Favre had a very good season at 40 years old
Moon had a pretty good season at 41 years old.

We will see. Those are the only 2 examples I found of QBs playing well at that age. Maybe he breaks the mold.

Spot on!
Our starting QB has failed to show his durability year after year so we need a durable #2 JAG who can be relied on to start game after game.

You are sacrificing a depth option

Basically it's about gambling Brady's health for 1 season vs. a high draft pick. And we're assuming Jacoby won't make a leap that puts him near Jimmy's talent level. Which is a fair assumption but an assumption nonetheless.

Because I can't imagine Jimmy G will be happy to be franchised or franchised into a new contract where he sits behind Brady for 2-3 more years.

Meh. One thing is clear, if they do trade Garoppolo, it's going to be because they're not afraid of Brady's age impacting the outcome of the next 2 season. From my perspective we're kind of in uncharted territory with this guy, no one's ever been this healthy this old. Makes it hard to really know what to do.

It's not hard. You trade Jimmy and suffer through more years of Tom Brady. It sucks being a Pats fan.

Something worth pointing out. 2018 should be a draft class loaded with QB talent not unlike the class Jimmy came out of.

If the Pats do decide to move on from Jimmy that class gives up a good chance to pick a guy to be our next QB and since we will pick him when Brady is 41 he will be there till Brady is 45 or 46 depending if it is round 1 or 2.

...and with TB wanting to play another five years, you can't expect JG to wait that long.

As long as he's sure of the time frame, of course.

If he wins his 6th next season, it may be much easier to give in to Gisele's desires regarding retirement. In other words, winning 3/4 yrs and a 6th SB may soften his stance a bit.

LOL, the article is largely echoing Eric RATgini: Jimmy G won't be traded

No one needs insurance till they need insurance.

Or it might make him want 7 even more! :D

keep him...if hes great, you dont trade a great QB for anything.

In general I'd agree, but as long as Brady remains effective next year, we'd lost Jimmy at the end of next season regardless. It's reasonable to argue that a high-quality backup is worth a round or two lower draft stock (Jimmy would, on the open market, at least secure a third round comp pick) when you're going to be a Super Bowl favorite, but there's really no way that Jimmy turns into the Patriots long-term QB without Brady crashing hard.

I wonder how much Jimmy G support is actually Jimmy G support and how much is fear of Brady's age.

So you can still bring in a veteran QB as a backup to Brady if they think Jacoby still needs to be developed more.. I'm sure once the pre-season roles around, they'll have a better idea of how much Jacoby has progressed and to what extent they could rely on him to come in and play a game or 2 in a bad situation..

I don't think its worth passing on the opportunity to cash in on Jimmy's trade value right now just for 1 year of insurance.. the picks we get could help this team for the next 5+ years to maximize the end of Brady's career... We still have a talented, young QB that they're developing behind him as a potential long term answer, so a veteran QB is a much cheaper insurance policy for 1 year than missing out on a potential mid 1st round pick + some other picks thrown in i'm sure (or a player)

Yea that's true, its very possible that he has a change of heart at some point during an off-season, where maybe he wants to spend more time with his kids while they're still young

You just never know.. but I think its a pretty safe bet that he'll be playing for at least another 2 years.. that means Brisset has 2 more years to develop as a potential future prospect.. and apparently next year's draft has a lot of good prospects as well, so they can double dip

That 1st round pick + others we get for Jimmy could get a premium player at another position of need (ie; C, RB, TE, LB, S, T, DL)
