Player Signing Patriots are signing Patrick Chung

Seems like ever since Rodney has been gone Bill has been searching for a reliable replacement.

Tank Williams, Chung, Ighedibo, Wilson and now Chung again.

If the role is so important maybe its time to spend another high draft pick instead of using cut rate options that are extremely limited at this point.

This was always the frustration with Chung though. He had hits like that in him, but they were too few and far between. His physicality was a big tease because he was often too late to the play to make that kind of impact.

In all seriousness, I'm not that upset by the signing unless I see some weird contract numbers. If he can be cut in camp without penalty, then this is nothing but competition for Tavon's spot as "Special teamer who's a Safety in name only".

He hits hard, but he doesn't have the body for it so he ends up being injured a lot. More importantly, though, he's a solid F-minus in coverage.

Well I understand the general disappointment but we can't have pro bowlers in the bottom of the barrel of our depth chart.

If you think he was a 2nd round pick (#34) it's ok to cry a little bit, but forget that, as a 3rd string player I'm ok with this signing, knows the system, knows the environment, can intercept a pass here and there. For a vet min, I'd rather go with him than Gregory's 2 mi. Maybe he can make the 5th year leap.

Of course, Danieal Manning would be a much better signing.

Chung was below average in coverage but strong against the run and played well in the box. If the plan is for him to start at SS, I believe the coverage ability of our corners and McCourty will more than make up for the coverage deficient Chung

Also will note that because Chung was a cut, he does not count as a qualifying free agent for compensatory pick purposes. So far the Pats have signed LaFell and Browner. They have lost Fletcher, Blount, Spikes, and Talib. That means currently they have 3rd and ~7th round compensatory picks in play.

Good signing. Cover 1/3 gives him a role he's decent at, he's cheap, has experience, and he doesn't affect the compensatory pick sweepstakes.

Pats signed a guy who knows the system to compete for a spot at the bottom of the roster. Sure it's surprising, but it's not a big deal. The Pats will likely bring in worse players than Chung to fill out the 90 man roster, and the others don't know the system.

I agree that, as long as he's getting negligible guaranteed money (and I assume that's the case), it's not the end of the world or anything. I'll never be comfortable with him lined up at safety, though.

I can only assume that, given the other additions (Revis, basically), they see a role for him he hasn't really been used in much before, if at all. It's interesting because it suggests they're really looking to do some creative things on defense again. Whether Chung is the guy who helps them in that pursuit remains an open question, of course.

I don't think his role, if he sticks, is going to be that of a safety but more as a sub package hybrid LB/S. I think he'll be used in the box and will get to play downhill which he's good at. I think\hope this also means they'll be drafting somebody for this exact role to compete with him. Shazier, Mosley, Van Noy, Christian Jones and others could fill that role.

As ripatsfans said above thread - he is OK in the run game, and we now have a safety who can cover a lot of range in McCourty. So there's that. It's a legitimate thought.

But, let's look at it this way: he's better than Wilson & Ebner. He's 3rd on the depth chart right now.

He's decent but overrated against the run. And saying that he's better than two late round prospect special teammers isn't saying much at all. He's an absolute waste of a roster spot that literally all of the forum has bad mouthed since last offseason and hopefully he's cut after camp.
