* Ye Olde 2013 Mock Draft Thread!! *

So your approach is to replace them with not 1 but 4 rookies? Curious approach, and not a very likely one.

The fact is, the Pats had THE solution in for a visit just over a year ago and let him get away. Dashon Goldson. The Pats made him an offer according to Reiss, but he preferred to re-sign with San Francisco for a 1 year $2M deal:

Revisiting Goldson pursuit - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Hindsight is always 20-20, and I'm not blaming the Pats for not having a crystal ball and realizing that Goldson would become a Pro Bowler and one of the best FSs in the NFL and making him an offer he couldn't refuse. But in retrospect, he was EXACTLY what our secondary needed, just like Red Bryant was EXACTLY what our DL needed. 2 guys who both very nearly signed with the Pats as FAs, and both chose to remain with their former teams.

Goldson, like basically that entire 49ers defense, played out of his mind last year. Those 6 interceptions look good, but he had far too many "Meriweather moments" for me to think Pats fans would be happy with him. Just look at the playoff game that they lost to the Giants. Goldson ran into his own teammate twice, both times forcing his teammate to drop an easy interception, and once knocking him out of the game. He's way off pace to match those 6 picks last year, and the one pick he has right now is 90% Stafford being terrible and 10% making a nice catch.

The real loss that you mentioned is Weddle. Early in the 2011 offseason, my mock consisted of trading both Meriweather and Sanders and signing Weddle. He's not as flashy as Goldson, but would be way better for what the Pats want to do on defense.

One problem with your approach is it assumes the Pats will hit on the "right" prospects. But we took Brandon Meriweather over Eric Weddle in 2007, we took Darius Butler in 2009 and passed on Lardarius Webb (#88 overall; he was a Box favorite that year IIRC), we took Terrance Wheatley over Terrell Thomas in 2008, and we passed on Richard Sherman in 2011 (I was a huge Sherman fan, and he was one of my day 3 binkies).

We have three rookies in the secondary right now, I'm not saying draft for and start them

Goldson might make it to FA this year but the 7.5 to tag him again is still a good deal.

Your opinion of him is irrational. Is he dating your daughter?

He's a top 10 safety. I would absolutely be happy with him.

If I did want a coverage safety with ballhawking skills who could play in space, I'd pray that the Honey Badger declares and send him a complimentary box of weed.

Tip the police off too. So, he gets busted and his draft stock falls even further. I want a veteran safety. Just sooooooooooooo frustrated with the way our db's are playing. Drafting a solution seems like we're just banging our head against the wall. I feel very leery of spending capital on a money pit.

It seems as though we're incapable of drafting a decent DB, might as well hire them in free agency and draft what we're good at.

There is a safety in Buffalo and a corner in Philly there need new contracts - If BB for once used real FA money and get those we would be instant upgraded big time.

There's a safety in Baltimore and a corner in NY too I wouldn't say no too. More likely, he just raids another teams' special teams for an average corner and safety.

Ed Reed is good, but i think i would take Byrd cause of the age. Both are huge ballhawks. Reed got few years left compared to Byrd. Plus i doubt Reed leaves Ravens. The cornerback you talk about wont be FA before next year right?

No, he'll be franchised I'd think. BB absolutely loves Ed Reed. I'm sure you're right, I doubt he'd play for another team, most likely will retire if they don't try to re-sign him. But if the Ravens decide to move on and Ed Reed is ready to play a little longer....? I suspect, unless the money is ridiculous, BB would move heaven and earth to sign him. Imagine the boost of leadership our secondary would get.

Edit: Actually I think you are right and that Revis' contract is up at end of 2013-14 season. My bad.

Right now, 6 games in, the most glaring weakness is again the pass defense. It’s fine for the base defense to be geared for stopping the run, but it doesn’t work well for protecting a lead when opposition has to throw. We’ve seen it against Baltimore, Seattle, and almost Denver. Baltimore and Seattle both overcame thirteen point deficits because the defense couldn’t stop the pass. The only other weakness is the offensive line. It’s still a pretty good unit but it’s the weakest for the Pats in years. I pick up 3 Oregon Duck offensive linemen. There is too much value to pass up. The OL scheme is the same as the Pats and they also run a full speed no huddle offense. I also pick up two full backs to help with the 3rd or 4th and shorts. The Pats have had trouble running against those types of downs since Koppen went down.

Trade Patrick Chung for a 3rd.

1. Trade for a high 2nd & 4th

2a. Dion Jordan, DE Oregon

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a prospect as long, athletic, and good at everything involved in stopping the pass. He bends the edge and goes around tackles so effortlessly. He’s the answer to mismatch TEs in coverage. He’s not bad against the run because he’s great at disengaging blockers, but at 6’6” 250 he’s not yet strong enough to start at DE. I think he can have an Aldon Smith type of rookie year. Comes in as a rookie, only plays in the nickel, and still has a huge impact. By the time he’s a sophomore he should easily have acquired the weight to play DE full time. Special teamer.

2b. Move back a few spots into the early third and pick up a 6th

3a. *Matt Elam, S Florida

Intelligent, fast, physical, high motor hit stick. He’s good against the pass and the run, but I like him a little more against the pass. Plays well around the LOS and as a slot corner in man and zone. Good special teamer. High character, leader, NFL bloodlines, you know, all things Belichick likes.

3b. Ezekiel Ansah, DE BYU

An interesting mix of JPP and JJ Watt. I usually hate older players but this one is worth it. He plays anything from nose tackle to OLB in BYU’s 3-4. He’s raw, plays a little too high, but has freakish size and athleticism. He can move inside on passing downs.

3c. *Da’Rick Rogers, WR Tennessee Tech

Probably the best value at WR in the draft as a former first round prospect. Big, fast, and smart - he’s this years Hernandez. I think his value is only going to continue to drop so the end of the third seems right.

4a. Trade for a 6th and 2014 4th

4b. Rashard Hall, S Clemson

I love this guy’s nose for the football. It doesn’t matter what kind of play or where the play goes, Hall is involved in it. Excellent play recognition and a definite playmaker. Plays FS at Clemson and is often the single high safety. Until Bill drafted Tavon Wilson all the safeties were thick, hard hitting, run stoppers. Hall can stop the run, and is listed at 210 pounds, but he looks thin IMO. Special teamer.

6a. Zach Boren, FB OSU - He has some blocking skills, some receiving skills, is a captain, and plays for Meyer. He just seems like a future Patriot and he’ll help run the ball when the defense knows it’s coming, like late in the game when trying to run out the clock.

6b. Quinton Dial, DT Alabama

This guy is good. He’s a big, long pass rusher with 5-tech size, but Saban moves him all around the D line.

7. Blaize Foltz, OG TCU

Big upside guard prospect with prototypical size. He might out bench Marcus Cannon. Powerhouse freak.

UDFA:

MarQueis Gray, QB Minnesota

He’s improved exponentially as a passer this season, but he’s also been hurt for most of the season. He reminds me a lot of RG3, and Ryan Tannehill. Physically he’s like a bigger but slower RG3, but he’s followed a Tannehill-like career path. They both started as WRs but moved to QB after two seasons. As passers they were both raw but showed lots of potential and improvement.

Taimi Tutogi, FB/TE Arizona

He’s a 6’1” 260 pound wrecking ball with light feet, good hands, and world class versatility. Not only is he a FB and TE, but he also played DL at Arizona. Special teamer.

Carson York, OG Oregon - Could have been a top 100 if not for the knee injury. He broke a knee cap (not that serious.)

Kyle Long, OT Oregon - A raw, but big, athletic tackle with upside and NFL bloodlines. He’s second string LT to a 275 lbs RS freshman, but I liked what I saw from him at ASU. He played a lot and didn’t look like a UDFA to me.

Ryan Clanton, OG Oregon - He’s unlisted at CBS, but I like him more than Nick Cody - his listed teammate that plays RG to Clanton’s LG. He’s a better pass blocker than run blocker.

That would be one heck of a draft. Jordan in the 2nd, Elam, Ansah and Rogers in the 3rd. Doesn't seem very likely to me, but I'd jump at it. Also hard to imagine trading Patrick Chung for a 3rd when he's a FA after this year. But points for the players picked. Nice work.

Everyone is drafted higher than their ranking at CBS except Rogers which I addressed, and all the trades are slight losses on the value chart.

Chung is a little optimistic. I originally had him worth a 4th and 5th in a tag and trade, but lazily changed it to a 3rd to pick up Rogers.

Thanks for the input.

Fair enough. I like essentially exchaning Chung for Elam - Elam is a playmaker. I never know whether to mock at this time of year based on current "rankings" or projections. I like the fact that your mock is heavy on lineman and coverage players.

I go with current rankings and project players that have special circumstances. Like Ansah is 75 spots early because he came out of nowhere and Rogers is 20 spots late because dismissed players never go as high as people think.

Very nice effort on the mock. Still not fully on the Jordan bandwagon but Jordan, Elam, ANSAH, Rogers would be a very nice mock. Bit concerned about the lack of a top notch interior offensive lineman but there's always next year I suppose.

Trade Patrick Chung for a third round draft pick?

You be lucky to get a ham sandwich and bag of potato chips for Patrick Chung!

If the Pats could pull it off I would like to see us trade Arrington, Gregory, and 1st and 3rd round picks for Eric Weddle. The Patriots would never do it, but I would love to see it. SD gets a player that knows and plays reasonably well in their system and a slot corner and picks. The Patriots would be able to shore up the secondary with a sure thing. Wilson and Weddle at S, Dennard and McCourty at CB would fix most of our problems in the secondary. It's 100% wishful thinking that would never happen, but I think that trade is fair for both sides.

Wouldn't work for multiple reasons. The main one is probably that the Chargers would have almost $8M in dead money from trading Weddle.

Mackenzie, what do you think of DJ Swearinger and Devonte Holloman?
