    It's simple....we can't afford anyone else that could be better. Yeah it's unusual to not have better competition at QB....but this is a very unusual year. We knew we would have cap issues when Brady left. I'm open-minded about the future with Stidham. Why not?

    My point is that if you go back to five games into his season, people were calling to bench Cassel and start O'Connell (or sign/trade for another QB).

    What Belichick needs to know is not just what he is at the beginning of the season, but if he's capable of growing the way Cassel did.

    He did go 11-5 in 08 and didnt make the playoffs which is extremely, extremely rare. However, your right, he did have quite the team from the year before.

    Fans root for tanking. Players and coaches never try to tank.

    People don't know what tanking is, do they?

    No team ever tries to lose. Players don't miss tackles or passes. Coaches don't say the stayed at a holiday inn and call the statue of liberty play or flea-flickers for fun. GMs however might make moves geared towards the future but sometimes that's needed depending on the player/contracts etc...

    That's really all tanking is. Trading good players for picks that might not sign. Playing youth instead of steady vets to see what/if you have anything. That's not trying to lose.

    I think going 8-8, staying mediocre is much worse. Some teams literally just want to be good enough to get their fans back. That's torture and completely unnecessary in today's game. It's a 2-3 year league.

    Bill would/could never even think about throwing an entire year. I'm very excited for Stid. I really am. He's more than capable and I think he has a small chance to be a good starter. Really excited about his mobility and arm talent. Both more than legit.

    If not they'll always be a more than a few QB's to choose from. There are 4-5 QB's I really, really like besides Lawrence. These next two classes have a lot of prospects that have potential. After that it looks like a drop from what I've seen from the young guys. Few and far between rn there.

    Funny how you rate the ability of a QB just based on the round he was picked in the Draft...
    I would have loved to read your comments about this skinny, non-athletic 6th round guy who took an additional 4th QB-spot in 2000, I think some people on this board would have gone nuts and would want to chase BB out of town...

    I am not negative on Stidham and I don't expect him to be 2007 Brady, what I do expect is a progress until end of the season, whether they end up in the POs or not, I want to see them develop and improve.
    If this can be seen, Stidham might evolve as the new guy, else the chances that Patriots draft a QB next season is reasonable.

    Tanking is a no-go in the patriots building under the rule of BB!

    There is a large correlation that the round does increase the likelihood of success. The vast majority of starters at any given time are 1st to mid 2nd round.

    As far as tanking, no team sets out to tank. They play the first part of the season and then evaluate their playoff chances. If you are in 1-5, 2-4 situation after the first 1/3rd of the season, you basically are talking about winning out to make the playoffs and it’s statistically an abberation at that point. At that point you start planning for next season and make decisions based off that.

    Stidham is not worth living and dying on. He could have been another Etling and never done anything it we kept Brady. As far as I’m concerned, he’s just the guy who happened to be here when Brady was gone. Give him some games but the idea should be win fast or lose fast.

    Someone else said it here but the worst thing an NFL team can do is be around .500

    It forces you to stick with things that aren’t working because the fanbase has the illusion that it’s just a few pieces. With the cap space we will have next year, this year is pivotal and could be the thing that sets us up for a decade or the beginning of a long run of mediocre. Sometimes it’s better to rip off the bandaid

    They couldn't tank if they tried. Hoyer could get them to 500, Stidham is presumably much better.

    Assuming health they have the best defensive backfield in the NFL, one of the best O-Lines in the AFC, one of deepest RB rooms in the league.

    Unless they have a nuclear meltdown of injuries and young players failing simultaneously, they won't be close to the worst team in the league... and there's no way to make this happen organically. The coaching alone will win them 4-6 games.

    No offense, but just a dumb premise. Trying to tank guarantees you nothing. Root for the Bengals to suck again. They have their QB and the Pat's have all the draft capital in the world, they could trade the house for the #1 pick.

    So, let's not have an backups and let's count on Stidham to take to us the playoffs because 20 YEARS AGO Belichick chose to keep Brady. Personally, I would have not have kept Bishop on the squad. And just BTW, Belichick waiting until the 6th to draft Brady.
    =======
    Please understand, the draft is about expected value. If late rounders are just as likely to be great, we should just trade our top picks. [WASH used to do that] The reality is that, for any team, their top picks are more likely to be successful than there lower picks. There are lots of stats. You can check the percentage for success of various positions at various draft choices.
    ======
    QUARTERBACKS
    Most top QB's are drafted in the top 10. There are percentages after that. Even if a team is great at picking quarterbacks, they might be able to get late first round value in the 2nd, or 2nd round value in the 3rd, or 3rd round value in the 4th. The point is that even 2nd round value is unlikely to developing a top quarterback. That is why it is usually good policy too have a backup with potential.

    Surely you're not comparing the college accomplishments & pro potential of Stid to those of Montana, Elway & Rodgers, right?

    If Hoyer starts games during 2020 ahead of a healthy Stid, then nothing will be guaranteed in 2021 for him here, except the 3rd year of his rookie contract...

    My take is, evaluate at the trade deadline: if we're competitive in games & in the division, then stay the course and see what what help is available to continue; if we're non-competitive, then trade the geezers for picks and play the kids, the W-L record will take care of itself...

    I knew you were itching to reply to my post! I haven't compared anything because Stidham hasn't had enough reps to warrant one. And I am not fond of your evaluate deadline take. For example LOL...Joe Montana was 2-6 his first 2 years (Stidham hasnt had 2 years in the league yet)...them the facts. Do you think Walsh was glad he stuck with him instead of bail at the trade deadline? Sometimes...it works out.
