I can't see him accepting less than $12.5M for 2020, for a total of $22M/2 years.

I mention this because so many of us have posted how easy it would be to sign some restructures to secure more cap room. Personally, I like the example that I gave. It keeps the McCourty's together through 2020, and gives us $3M of cap room this years.

I guess the question is in 2020 at 33 years old, what will his FA market be? Does he want to be here at a potentially a discounted rate?

Devin is getting 13.435M this year. 3.935 is already handed out. Frankly he isn't worth his cap number at this point. Then again it's unlikely in this market they find a better option for 9.5M (the amount that would be freed up if he was cut).

I guess they just need to swallow it unless he wanted to extend which I hope they do. I like the player and his leadership. I wouldn't mind eating a little dead money in year 2 or 3 (if it comes to that) to knock his cap hit down 5-6M this year. They really need the space and his presence is good here.

I doubt the Pats do anything that adds money to his current deal. What they CAN do is to do some kind of extension (since his brother is signed to another year) and gain some cap room THIS year at the expense of a bigger hit down the road.

I think I remember @Miguel speculating on a realistic deal that saves the Pats around $5MM on this year's cap.

In the end, with the additions of Bolden, Simon, and McCourty, the Pats are going to have to SOMETHING with their existing contracts in order to have ANY impact in FA down the road.
