2018 FA . NE Day 4: recap // UPDATED

Just FYI..

For now Dola is exactly on the edge between 5th and 6th round comp pick. And still projected to be a fifth. Thats because the salary rank cutoff between those two picks is 270. Right now Dolas 6m APY are rank 261.

Compensatory Draft Picks Cancellation Chart | Over the Cap

So 9 more FAs with salaries higher than Dola and he will drop under that line.

I don't know if these numbers are determined dynamically (i.e., adding a new contract changes other ranks), or if they are static relative to 2017. If the latter, then no reason to worry. If the former, it's more likely. That said, there are playtime adjustments, so even if he drops below the line, he could rise above it.

I would strongly assume they are dynamic. FA is only running officially since yesterday. I guess that Nelson will push down Dola by a spot as soon as the Raiders deal is signed.

Some roster structure notes w re. to next signings:

People are dismissing today's visits of Casillas and esp. Woodhead, Cleveland . prying tirelessly for big money names (that should come to NE for a change of course) . but the fact of the matter is low end FA are important signings this year - esp. those who don't count against comp picks.

Current Pats team has 64 signed players which means 26 more to go.
If you look at the structure of the team here - 2018 FA . Day 2: recap + enter NE - you can see that this is relatively young and relatively expensive team. I don't think Pats want to bring another bunch of 2o+ rookies again to the minicamp while they will be already bringing some 30 players with 2 NFL seasons or less. I think it is imperative to get to the more standard structure of 90 roster with around 15 rookies and 10 more vets. Which means most of the vets have to be close to vet minimum signings. Bringing familiar players like that helps the balance and focus of the preseason process..

While official numbers aren't in yet, Miguel is estimating Burkhead's 2018 cap hit at around $2.3M - right in line with White and Gillislee.

Actually official numbers are in . I was sure i updated it..
Thanks. Let's go! Let's fill this baby with some juicy “jags“;)

Lets add a list of FA visits so far:

Thursday: LB Casillas, RB Woodhead, TE Cleveland
Friday: DE Clayborn, RB Hill, CB Breaux, OT Tobin
reported possible visit: TE Ebron

no deals yet . but if nothing else this list shows what positions Pats want to fill with vets.
starter: DE, OT (not Tobin Id guess; they are in on both Waddle and Fleming)
situational/rotational: LB, RB, TE
depth: CB, OT, RB

Coming together. LB time - to the draft!

@DL
Id say the chart is a bit more fluid at this positions. Let's say they'll play some sort of 3-3/4-2/5-1 hybrid fronts most of the time. The addition of Shelton Id guess puts/frees Brown back to more versatile DT/DE use and Guy as well with even more DE options. A. Butler is a very versatile option as well so we will see where his sophomore jump takes him. Lee looks like he could be playing on and off the line like Rivers.

@LB
When both HT and KVN were healthy we saw HT playing OLB/DE and KVN staying behind but Id agree it probably works better the other way. In any case they are both versatile and interchangable there. I hope Langi competes at both positions this TC. I thought they were forcing him a bit at on-line OLB (of course with sudden Ninko retirement, Rivers injury and Ealy woes that was also part of emergency solutions). If M.Flowers is lost as it seems . Langi should be in the mix there as off-line OLB situational option (and core ST). Grigsby will be interesting to monitor there as well (can he compete for M.Flowers part?)

Some notes on the signings / new roster structure:

Patriots have added 10 players in this FA so far (5 re-signed, 2 trades, 3 UFAs).
They addressed all positions except QB, LB, TE and S.
They added potential starters at DT, DE, CB, RB + core ST.
They added depth at WR, RB, OL(T).

They are still looking at some further veteran additions reportedly:
OT - starter/swing -- interest reported in Waddle, Fleming, Howard; possible big trade
LB - situational/ST (2-5M range), ST/depth (vet min) -- own: M.Flowers; visit: Casillas; interest: Worrilow
TE - #2,3 -- visit: Cleveland; rep. interest: Ebron
CB - starter/depth -- visit: Breaux

Other:
QB - developmental -- to be addressed at Draft
S/HYB/STAR - slow market/plenty good opt. left, can add vet or Draft
DL - depth - another vet for vet min deal

Questions:
Punt returner: Edelman, Cyrus Jones / Dorsett ?, McCarron ?
Kick returner: Burkhead ?

At 6'1"/220 (230?) and with pretty good measureables, I was thinking he might fit best in a MoF/SS role. He apparently played the Star role as a senior at Arizona.

4.51/40 .. 1.56/10yd .. 21 reps .. 36.5 vert/124 long .. 4.27 ss/6.90 3c

The bottom line for me, going into FA-Day4, is that the RBBC is now full, and the DL and CB additions have reduced the Pats significant/immediate needs to OT and LB, and moved them that much closer to being able to pursue a BPA approach in the Draft, and maybe even take a flyer on a prospect.

Roster-building is fascinating.

About the only interesting names left imo are Breaux, McPhee, Breeland, Curry, and maybe Jerell Freeman.
