Very very late thread about CBS broadcast of Super Bowl

Jimnance.

Nope, not his brother. I just used to watch the wide world of sports in the seventies. He would also do football games and my dad hated him for always insulting everyone in some way but i thought it was hillarious. He had no mercy and would just verbally shread teams, coaches and especially muhammed ali...i guess he really hated him.

I couldn't stand either Cosell or Ali. To me they were both blowhards and were the originators of trash talk in their respective professions.

I suppose I got spoiled with all of the broadcasting talent and respectable sports stars that I grew up with in the 60's and I wasn't ready for that kind of nonsense.

I know saying nice things about Dan Fouts is verboten on this board for some reason, but he would have been wildly entertaining in that 4th quarter.

I don't really care either way with Fouts, but it does seem that he gets upset when the Pats do well. If he were doing that 4th quarter he might have been the whole time.

For me, TV play-by-play is pretty sterile. IMO: the best teams are McDonough and Gruden. I like Michaels but Collinsworth is a prick. Collinsworth does his homework, and I probably learn way more from him than anyone, but SB49 was unforgivable!

I like Nance but Sims is a blabbermouth. I usually just mute him. Buck is ok, but Aikmen is monotone. Best color guy for me was John Lynch.

On the other hand, the RADIO broadcast from Westwood One with Harlan and Eisiason are excellent. Play the Westwood One audio (from your computer) with the muted video broadcast from your TV.

Attached are two radio links for your enjoyment:

Westwood One SB49 (excellent audio)

Westwood One SB51 (crappy audio)

Can anyone provide a better SB51 Westwood One link for the entire broadcast?

Yep.. Jimnance is right. That was great stuff back then. Remember the guy who would sing " turn out the lights, the party is over" ?

Trash talking owns.

I am usually very close to the front of the line for the "Joe Buck sucks" brigade, but I thought he did a really good job in the Super Bowl. I wish I had recorded the whole game (superstition) so I could re-hear it, but what I do have recorded (from the Edelman catch on) he is really great. Excited but letting what we're seeing speak for itself.

Had Collingsworth be doing the game, we'd have been hearing about the Falcons 3rd down holding penalty for the entire overtime.

I'd rank Madden 2nd all time,after cosell/ Meredith/Gifford.
Madden was a joke near the end of his career(e.g. 2001 SB lol). But in his prime he was one of the best,- better than anyone who's come after him.
Damn auto-correct put down "Hollingsworth", I usually catch those "corrections". You're right about Madden's last year or two, he seemed almost like a caricature of himself.

Honestly, I have no complaints.

In fact, I still get chills when I hear Buck say 'This is a tie game!" when the ref announces the two point attempt was against Atlanta (and thus would be declined).

The reaction after the Edelman catch was great too.

I'm just glad they didn't talk about deflategate during critical fourth quarter drives like what happened in SB 49.

If the complaint is that they should have 'home announcers' then I would agree with that (but that's a story for another day).

Don't know why this just occurred to me, but does anyone agree that Aikman and his sidekick were practically comatose during the 4th quarter. Such a blah reaction to an unbelievable 20 minutes of football. I know Collingsworth isn't a favorite around here but imagine if NBC did the game. He would have freaked out and at least been in tune with the magnitude of the comeback, and his enthusiasm would have driven the viewer tension even higher. Aikman has the personality of wallpaper.

Do you want Phil SImms?!?! This is how you get Phil Simms.

Can't stand Michaels anymore. His calls get sloppier every season, like he could give a crap. Liked it when Tirico replaced him a few games this year. Collinsworth is knowledgeable but I agree his SB49 performance was horrific. Talking about the Wells Report like it was the 9/11 commission during 3rd and 14 was unforgivably bad.
I've actually noticed this too. Michaels is 72 now and clearly at the tail-end of his career. He feels like he's just mailing it in anymore. I don't necessarily think he's "bad", but he used to be superb and now he just feels kind of... lazy and a little unprepared.

They could have been announcing in Chinese for all I cared about them.
With the amount of background noise I had during my viewing I thought they were speaking Chinese or some other unknown language!

With all due respect, when I saw it wasn't Nantz and Collingsworth I was THRILLED. They RUINED the last Superbowl, culminating with their shock and rage at the Butler Int, where all they did was rag on the playcall, and in the last few minutes when it seemed the Pats were going to win, Collingsworth immediatedly segued into a long boring nasty trope about Deflategate blah blah blah.

I actually had to turn the volume OFF THE GAME and felt pretty robbed of, at the bare minimum, a neutral call. I would have even preferred Pat Summeralsl sleep walking thru the Patriots game winning first Superbowl. The kick is good. Oh no shyte really?

Collingsworth and Nantz to me is as bad a that moron Dan Fouts, and as insipid as Phil Simms.

But how do I really feel....

I have never ever read a post that I have agreed more with.

We listened to Eye -an (Ian) Eagle do quite a few broadcasts this year along with Fouts and I believe he was decent. Did the call. Raised his enthusiasm at the appropriate time. Dealt with Fouts and his mediocrity. I know he'll never get the big game because that is a birthright of Nance. I would think though that there should be some articulate newer ex- QB's out there ready to begin a career. Dare I say perhaps even an African American ( oh my ). By the way, in a side rant. Except for the eye candy that they present for the camera, side line reporters are basically useless and from their vantage points, can hardly see the game unfold. Get that Red head delight on the Pats Cheerleaders. She couldn' t do worse and could always be counted upon to be "cheerful" even when reporting an injury.

imo it made it even better. the were excited during exciting plays, and kept their opinions to themselves.

ill take that over the knob gobbling that happens with CBS and NBC
