This Patriots team is easily the worst in two decades and I’m not sure how they’re going to improve.

maybe they draft a QB for the future, maybe Stidham is a stud. But it’s just as likely Brian Hoyer is the QB of a lackluster offense and an aging defense will continue to decline

My question is do BB and McDaniels actually have a workable plan to make the team competitive this year OR are they flying by the seat of their pants hoping they get lucky in the draft and just believe they are entitled to 1-2 crap years as part of a once every 20 year rebuild.

Its hard to see the plan, we will find out this weekend if they substantially improve their team or not (on paper)

Thought the plan last year with the addition of Cajuste, Froholdt and Harris heralded the beginning of a transition to a more ground based offense to take the pressure off of an older Brady.. but that did not work out all that well.

My guess is that Thuney moves on and we will see another 2nd or 3rd draft pick..

The Pats are rebuilding, whether or not they will be as competitive as in the past remains to be seen. .

This was a trade proposed in a mock by Dolphins beat writer Armando Salguero from the Miami Herald.

Patriots trade 1(23) + OG Joe Thuney to Miami for 1(26) + 2(37) + 3(70)
So we move back 3 spots in the first round and pick up a high 2nd and high 3rd round pick for Thuney. I would have thought this was an overpayment by Miami (values Thuney as a late 1st round pick) but if they were to offer it I would jump all over it. This kind of return could help accelerate a rebuild but I doubt we get close to this kind of offer.

I want them to sign him. They can push his cap hit out, they have plenty of money next year.

I would bite Miami's hand off if that Salguero offer was accurate. I'm sure Bill would too.

The absolute MAX the Pats get for Thuney will be a third rounder. Think about the Jamie Collins trade, where BB basically sent him to Cleveland for the same comp pick he would have gotten them if he played and left a year later.

I was shocked that they franchised him, but I guess they knew they were already going to lose Brady and everyone else. Imagine if I told you two years ago that the Pats would trade Brady and Gronk and get back only a late 3rd and early 4th rd picks.

I voted for a draft day trade. I think they love Thuney but they aren’t going to pay that much $$ for their guards. I won’t be surprised if they take a LT and move Wynn inside.

If you assign Thuney the value of a late 2nd round pick, they could potentially deal Thuney, 23 and one of their late 3rds to get into the 11-13 range. I'd do it for one of the big 4 OTs (move Wynn to LG or RT, if Cannon is cut or struggles again early in the season and Cajuste is not ready) or if Brown somehow drops out of the top 10.

Thuney and 23 alone could get get them into the 14-16 range, for Kinlaw.

It isn't clear whether any of the OT's would be ready to start. Also, I suspect that Belichick is fine with Wynn at LT, and with Cajuste as the swing OT. We could keep Newhouse as our 4th OT, draft one late, or trade for a vet backup.

I'd rather draft Ruiz who is the best IOL in the draft, and a future pro-bowl center. He can immediately start at LG, and also be our backup center if Andrews has health issues.

OT: Wynn, Cannon, Cajuste, ??? (Newhouse/Cunningham for now)
OG: Ruiz, Mason, Froholdt, Eluemunor
OC: Andrews, (Ferentz if we carry 10 OL's)

In addition to Andrews insurance (which is very necessary), I like the idea of having Froholdt and Cajuste as #1 backups, pushing the others for starting roles. Competition makes the line better.

Miami would never go for that but I'd do it even for 26, 37 and a swap of their 3rd round picks (which is a more reasonable trade).

I'm thinking he gets traded the closer we get to draft night. I hope I'm wrong and something gets worked out.

Agree. I think that'll be the ultimate end-state.

I'm sure they've already made calls & received them. I'm assuming they already have a pretty good feel for his trade market.

Love me some Thuney. But bracing for both (1) a draft day trade and (2) the ensuing whining on here about how BB got fleeced and his GM-ing is « costing NE »....

It's a forgone conclusion.

Everyone thinks they can do better in a trade than BB.

With the exception of the 40 yard dash and the standing jump, BB > me on all football levels.

trade thuney, draft OT josh jones in round 1, move wynn to LG.

When in reality they’re closer to Bill O’Brien than BB in terms of trading.

Typically the patriots plan is to field the best team they can before the season and improve every game during the season. They also try to avoid sacrificing the future for the present.

last year was kind of an anomaly, in that they didn’t really improve as the season went along and they signed contracts that pushed a lot of dead cap money into this year.

The plan will still be to have a better team game 16 than they do in game one. Just because you can’t envision how they do that doesn’t mean it won’t happen.

Belichick is probably the best coach ever, it’s pretty wild that so many can have watched the Patriots for so long then think the Pats will be terrible without any discernible plan.

i expect Thuney to be traded because Bill would rather get value for him now than sign him to an extension that could hurt the team long term.
