Is gronk hurt bad?
He's not hurt at all.

That prick Florio, who's all things Gronkowski due to the fact that he's buddy-buddy with Gronk's agent, says he has sources telling him that the ankle injury is not serious and that Gronk is "fine."

Watching this game, I didnt really feel bad about the defense and wouldnt have even if they lost. They played most of the game with just edelman and amendola at WR ,no ridley, no cannon ,no dennard, a half okay talib and gutted out a win.Brady and BB just carrying this team to some extremely tough circumstances. Most teams wouldve folded with this type of injury bug but they continue to plug along. 13th consecutive season of winning record.

he was back in the game after getting shaken up so I doubt it..

We all know 2011 AFCCG. But if florio says he is fine, I guess he is. Will have to wait until the injury report.

How was Boyce today in the offense, missed the first 58:00 of the game.

Pats are still trying to find themselves on D. We saw today after a great game last week why Fletcher isn't in there consistently. We took Spikes out then put fletcher in and the very next play he got engulfed by a OL leaving a huge hole on the right for Tate to run through. Good news is we have time to get this right. If our Pass D can get healthy this really changes everything and i am not tooooo worried about the D come playoffs.

Offense played well against a very good on paper defense. How about Svitek holding his own all game for a good performance. He is our 4th OL and held up his end.

KT running great routes of PA and Edelman being used well. I actually though Texas covered gronk pretty well one on one with a CB today. Unfortunately for them he absolutely abused their LB's in coverage.

Another gritty win by this team. It looks in all likely hood we will be the 2-3 seed (hopefully 2). I am hoping the draw gets stacked against Denver in the Cold... fingers crossed.

Because that's the only way they've lost their 10 games this year, cheating by opponents. lol.

Yeah, the 2-9 Texans invented a defensive look neither Brady Or BB had ever seen before. Still working on that perpetual motion machine.

The Patriots got their first road win of the year in Houston on Sunday thanks to a 34-31 win over the Texans.

That's the caption on the front page of PatsFans.com, it should be changed. They won in Buffalo and Atlanta.

Houston started pretty much at 50 almost every first half drive.

Have to admit, that Jets call sticks in my craw. That call makes a huge difference in the AFC this year.

Mr. 9-11 has to earn his way to that game in the divisional round.

Fun fact #2: the current top-ranked run defenses in the NFL are NYJ and JAX.

Fun fact #1: it's been 5 years since a team with a run defense ranked in the top half of the league won the Superbowl.

IOW, this isn't the stat that's going to keep me awake at night.

Ravens were #8 in the NFL in Y/A last year and the Steelers were #1 in 2008. #9 won in 2007 and #1 won in 2005.

Y/A is yards per attempt, not yards allowed. Even with the passing rules we now have, top 10 run-stopping defenses have won half the SBs post-changes. Top 10 passing offenses (net y/a) have won 5 of 8.

Thoughts on the game:

- I’m surprised we played soft zone against them so much. We played Manning and his better receivers man all game, I thought we’d do the same against Keenum and his receivers. Dennard was only in 21 plays of the 90 plays against Denver. So having him out against Houston wasn’t really that big. Especially since Houston doesn’t have the number of dangerous receivers Denver rolls out with.

- We lost every single first down run on D. They at least gained 5-6 yards. And we were not playing nickel all game like we were against Denver.

- Our interior DL just isn’t strong enough to engage and shed blockers. They’re probably better off shooting the gaps and penetrating. At least they’ll have a chance. Mix it up at least with some stunts.

- Surprised Fletcher didn’t get more snaps on our base defense.

- Talib looks like he’s still bothered by that hip injury. He’s not as quick as he was.

- Arrington. SMH. He’s good for at least one bonehead play a game.

- Andre Carter played better. Looks like he’s getting his feet under him. By the time playoff comes around, it sure would be nice if he’s dialed in opposite Chandler. Chandler/Ninko/Carter would be the best pass rushers we’ve had since Colvin/McGinest/Vrabel.

- Hated our offensive game plan to start the game. Again we tried to grind it out and took the ball out of Brady’s hand, tyring to set up the pass with the run. We are just not that type of team as we showed again when we changed it up in the second half. Pass the stupid ball to set up the run. Let Brady do what he does best.We don’t have the offensive line to push teams off the LOS and dominate. We just don’t. Frustrating to see in the first half.

- Brady’s a rhythm QB. The more he passes, the better he is. Brady was unreal in the second half.

- Disappointing to see Ridley on the bench. Don’t kill his confidence even more.

- Bolden, is not the answer. Not sure if he’s injured, but he looks slower than what he showed earlier this year. Blount looked quicker which says a lot about how slow Bolden looked.

- Edelman is making the Amendola signing look foolish. Although I think Amendola could still be a big contributer.

- Thomkins looked good before he got hurt. Dobson looked good before he got hurt last week. If one of these guys are healthy in the playoffs, it will be the first time Brady will have a legit outside threat going into the playoffs since 07.

- Edelman, Amendola, Thomkins/Dobson, Gronk, and Vereen, there really is no reason why we’re just not spreading people out, no huddling, and killing defenses to start the game.

Started off slow, but good character win overall.

Week 14 : The Cleveland Browns 1pm @ Gillette

I think patriots smoke Cleveland this week...

What do you guys think?

Great win. I'll take it.

IF we can find a way to stop the run we'll be tough to beat.

I'm ok with them being very good against the pass and poor against the run. If, you know, they actually can be very good against the pass.

If they're below average against the pass and the worst in the league against the run, then Brady better put up 38 points a game.

Have to admit, that Jets call sticks in my craw. That call makes a huge difference in the AFC this year.

The Pats really should be 10-2, and possibly 11-1. They should have won the Carolina game. If that obvious penalty is called, the Pats have one play from the one-yard line to win the game. It's not a lock that they score, of course, but it's better than a 50% chance.

They *could* have won the Jets game. If that penalty is not called, it's still overtime tied, and who knows.

But still, on principle….

Some nice breakdown from reiss today

Picked-up pieces from 3rd quarter review - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Picked-up pieces from 4th quarter review - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

1. What changed for the Patriots' offense in the third quarter? There were two things that stood out from their opening drive (5 plays, 78 yards, in just 2:19). They went empty on the first play with two receivers, one tight end, one fullback and one running back, spreading out the Texans' base defense. That simplified the picture for quarterback Tom Brady in terms of what the Texans were doing defensively (Danny Amendola for 16 yards was easy pickings with linebacker Darryl Sharpton in coverage). Then, on the next three plays, they tilted the field by aligning multiple receivers to one side while attacking the opposite side in the passing game with either tight end Rob Gronkowski or running back Shane Vereen. This, from our viewpoint, allowed them to exploit the Texans' linebackers and safeties in coverage with two of their best players -- Gronkowski and Vereen.

2. That theme continued on the next drive. There were multiple empty formations out of two-back sets to exploit the Texans' base defense and make them cover the width of the field. Then, on Vereen's 9-yard touchdown catch, the Patriots tilted the field to the right side with receiver Julian Edelman, tight end Matthew Mulligan and Amendola, and brought Gronkowski up the seam off the left side of the line on the "open" side of the field. That drew significant attention from the Texans' defense in the end zone (3 players), leaving Vereen unaccounted for in the left flat for the catch and easy walk-in for the score.

3. Those looked like two of the Patriots' main halftime adjustments -- empty formations out of two-back sets and creating more of an "open" side of the field and attacking it.

6. Bill Belichick called an uncharacteristic early-in-the-half timeout when the Texans' offense faced a third-and-1 with 12 minutes remaining in the quarter. The Patriots had sent in their short-yardage defense, with linebackers Dane Fletcher and Jamie Collins replacing defensive backs Logan Ryan and Duron Harmon, but there was one problem -- the Texans had a three-receiver set on the field. Perhaps sensing they were vulnerable to the big play with just two players in the secondary, Belichick must have felt it was important to get the right personnel on the field. But after the timeout, the Texans went with a two-receiver package, and so the Patriots countered in their base 3-4 and defensive end Joe Vellano made an excellent play to drive right tackle Derek Newton into the backfield and stop Ben Tate for no gain to force the punt. That was one of the "game within the game" type situations.

3. Why don't cornerbacks turn back for the ball? We've heard that question asked often in recent years and one reason why was illustrated on DeAndre Hopkins' 66-yard catch against cornerback Kyle Arrington (13:09 remaining). Arrington looked back, lost track of Hopkins, and was beaten for the big play. Arrington had been called upon in place of Logan Ryan as the cornerback opposite Aqib Talib for that drive, but didn't play again on the final two drives as he was replaced by Marquice Cole. Arrington has been playing through a groin injury.

On the last play before Gostkowski's final FG, Brady was locked in on Gronk, even though he had Vereen open.

Gronk had CB Brandon Harris on him, while Vereen had Keo on him. Keo was a good 2 yards away from Vereen when he made his break, while Gronk was blanketed.

Should have thrown to Vereen.

Either that or the throw to Gronk should have been high and outside so that the DB would have no chance to knock it away and only Gronk could have gotten his huge mitts on it. Yes it would have been a tight window, pinpoint throw, but this is Brady we're talking about here. We expect those types of throws from him, especially at critical moments.

Vereen's been dropping routine passes while Gronk's making off balance shoestring catches knowing he's going to get hit, so I don't consider choosing Gronk over Vereen to be any kind of issue, whatsoever.

Vereen's been dropping the over the shoulder variety though. This wouldn't have been one of those. It would have been the same route and catch that he caught on just the previous play.

3rd/2 from Houston's 35, with < 3-1/2 mins left in the 4th Qtr, should've been a run.

And just like the awful play call from inside Carolina's 10 late in the 4th Qtr there,
the correct call should've been either a stretch handoff, pitchout or draw to Vereen
so that he could use his speed & elusiveness to gain the edge & outrun his pursuit.
