Where in the base do you project him? On the outside or creating controversy on the inside and many "trade spikes" threads on pats fans.com :D

OLB. Thats his best spot.

Really like the Bequette pick. I just wish they would have taken a safety people have heard of.

Well, The highlite film on Bequette was interesting. He absolutely destroyed him some QBs. Great motor. Like someone said itll be tough to get those results against NFL tackles. But he will also get bigger stronger and hopefully develope some pass rush moves and tech. There is potential there. Im rooting for this guy. He wants to kill everything on the field.

For what it's worth a few draft guys including Nawrocki had Tavon Wilson #9 after George Illoka from Boise who a few people here liked.

The Patriots drafted a position in dire need. Whilst I'm not overly thrilled, I don't know enough about Wilson to make an informed comment on the decision. I'll be interested to hear BB's press conference.

If you glean any insight from that, please let us know. :D;)

"Uh ... well ... showed good leadership and performed competitively against the opposition in a strong conference ... Was a team captain ... Is smart and versatile ... Was the best player at that spot which we felt can help our football team ... We had him rated highly regardless of what the other "experts" might think ... :blahblah: :yawn2: ... "

The second round picks are graded at nfl.com, and it's instructive to see TAYvon's rating of 48. The picks before and after are in the 84 range.

They rated the pick of Derek Wolfe very poorly also.
But, newsflash, their "ratings" don't mean sh!t.

They certainly aren't sold on this tremendous reach. Maybe the scouting dept. of the Patriots has unearthed a guy absolutely no one else could see.

Unlikely but possible.

You mean a guy who has 2 All-Big Ten Honorable mentions, was a year team captain, 3 year starter and played in 48 of 50 potential games in his college career?

This is the 48th player taken? A guy who the coaches in his own league don't award as even an honorary all big ten player, even though he had been a long-time starter? things aren't adding up here.

The arrogance of Belichick is really coming through.

Well, I agree that taking the kid at 48 was a stretch, but calling BB arrogant for it is just you being arrogant with the idea that you might know more than him. Last I looked, you don't work for any NFL team and you can't even get correct whether a guy got Honorable Mentions despite his name being there in black and white.

Hey, did you miss the Jarvis Green reference? :p

The funny thing is I actually noticed that and tried to come up with a good non-white comp for Bequette! I wanted a big, sturdily built DE who isn't a super fast or fluid athlete but succeeds with power and play recognition. Who am I missing?

Chandler Jones hopefully.

you left out competitive

OLB. Thats his best spot.

Yea me too, there are questions about his agility and ability to change direction out there however.

Best thing about this process is, we always find out sooner or later who the real players are regardless of the endless analysis.

Joe Adams is still available at WR...Doubt he will be available for us in the 5th though.

I got out of BB what I was hoping for; "he has some versatility". ;)

One of his best strengths in many reports his his strength, power and ability to set the edge. Another is good zone coverage knowledge. Pass rush skills are really the biggest unknown because he didn't do it a lot in college.
In our base 34, we don't really need both OLBs to be great pass rushers.
One is going to be the 4th rusher, and it could go anywhere from 50/50 to one of them 100% of the time. Ideally 50/50 is harder to defend, but historically, BB has been fine anywhere along that scale.
I see Hightower as a solid, allaround versatile OLB who won't be the guy who rushes all the time, and not even a 50/50, and a guy who play LB in the sub, not DE.
Of course there is a lot of work to do for him to carve out his role, but thats what I see now.
If Jones develops into the other OLB, they actually complement each other very well.

Joe Adams is still available at WR...Doubt he will be available for us in the 5th though.

There's some serious WR's out there:

Joe Adams
Marvin Jones
Chris Givens
Greg Childs
Jarius Wright
Nick Toon
Juron Criner
Tommy Streeter

I like people throwing around the word arrogance in regard to Belichick like it's a bad thing. Like when he cleaned house when he got here getting rid of dead weight on our roster that Carol never had the nuts to do? Letting guys like Law, Eaton and Milloy, Martin, Branch and a plethora of other receivers go so we didn't strap the team down with ridiculous contracts? Choosing to go with Brady over Bledsoe? I'll take his arrogance over fan favorite coaches any day.

I am totally confused over this Travin Wilson draft pick.
Why in the world did we feel we needed to draft him #45.
If they wanted him, he would have probably been available in the
5th round.

There have been 5 safteys drafted so far.

Mark Baron drafted #7 had a ESPN Scouts rating of 95
Harrison Smith drafted #29 had a ESPN Scouts rating of 89
Travon Wilson drafted #45 had a ESPN scouts rating of 32
Brandon Taylor drafted #73 had a ESPN Scouts rating of 78
Brandon Harden drafted #79 had a ESPN Scouts rating of 62

Deaderick and Fanene are LDEs in the 43.

The DTs are
Wilfork = stud
Love = shouldn't be a starter
Pryor = can't get on the field, or do anything when he does
Brace = total enigma who could be gone

It doesnt get any thinner.

You really should learn the team better, Andy.

Deaderick played LDE last year out of team need. But he's also 300+ lbs and better served as a DT in the 4-3. Not LDE. That's where he plays in the 3-4, btw. Those positions are different.. Significantly.

Where do you get that Fanene is a LDE for the Pats in the 3-4? He's more of a pass rusher than a run stopper. In fact, for the Bengals, he was a 3rd down interior pass rush specialist. So, my pointing out that he'll be used there shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. You being contrarian about it just makes you look foolish.

Why shouldn't Love be a starter? Because you say so? That and $5 will get me a Venti at Starbucks..

BTW, I never mentioned Brace.

As for Pryor, I mentioned him because of the position he played in the one year he was fully healthy. I would think that someone as smart as you could have figured that out..

It's TAVON Wilson, not TRAVON Wilson.. And who cares what ESPN's rankins were.

I have to say, while I'm O.K. with this pick and the first two, the Travon Wilson pick is so horrible, it ruined this draft for me. I keep reading, 'trust BB, he knows DBs better than us', but his history on drafting DBs actually makes me feel it's less likely that he knows more than everybody else in drafting Wilson. I'm also reading 'how do you know there were any takers to trade back with that pick', but if GB took our later 2nd Rd pick for a 3rd and a 5th, they would have taken this one for it. I'd have rather gotten two picks for the first 2nd Rd pick, and BB could have very likely drafted this undrafted free agent type safety in the 3rd Round, and still have had the second 2nd round pick.

Sorry to look at the glass as half empty, but you draft a 2nd Round pick in hopes of big things from the guy, and how many here can realistically say we will hit with Travon Wilson? I highly doubt it, which means BB yet again didn't hit on a 2nd Rd pick. Amazing! I'm very bummed, and again should be feeling good about adding 4 defensive players. It could be a very good draft, but it could have been absolutely great, and it won't be now.

Final Point: I've seen several comments online that, 'well they hit on Mankins and Vollmer when most didn't agree with the picks. The difference to me is after those picks we all did some digging and it gave us alot to be happy and hopeful about. I'm trying to dig on this guy and keep finding empty pages. Really Bill, you honestly couldn't take a chance on getting some value picks and getting this guy later? Is he really such a can't miss, that you HAD to draft him this high in the 2nd round?

Agreed....

I've spent the last 40 minutes watching the youtube video's of Illinois games. I have come to the conclusion that Wilson is either so good, teams stayed away from him, or he's that bad.....I can't recall him making one single play

Very dissapointed with this pick (especially in that spot)
