Shank: "...cruise ship mentality took hold with the Patriots and their fans"

I've read enough of Shaughnessy's columns to conclude that he enjoys tweaking Pats fans and getting under their skin. I don't think he goes so far as to write what he doesn't believe, but I also think that his tongue is pretty close to his cheek in a lot of what he says.

He probably comes to this Forum for amusement and is no doubt reading this thread to see how many took his bait.

A sports journalist friend, whose opinion I respect, knew him pretty well and always spoke well of him. Dan is not a jerk, but just another guy trying to get clicks...at which he seems to have amply succeeded in this case.

In general, I've made it a personal practice not to read his stuff ever since I figured out his game. I suggest that you should do the same if he bothers you.

Why's Shank bashing cruise ships......the last place on earth where he can find Eastern European hairstylists still in-tune with the Irish jerry curl.
PS....we all know the true root of his anger

I had to read it for fun.

He is claiming that the team and its fans are complacent, had easy rides to the Super Bowl and didn't earn their success the good ole fashion way.

Typical belittling, righteous, hack piece by a washed-up has-been of a writer who is trying to stay relevant by being a contrarian....and sucking badly at it.

How could he be a "has been"?

Don't you need to be a "been" first?

My name is Dan.

I hate sports, but write about them for a living.

I hate the teams, players coaches, and owners.

I especially hate the fans which is ironic because they are my "customers." For some reason that defies all logic and reason, enough of them have continued to lap up the pathetic drivel I've been pumping out for decades to allow me to do this for a living.

It's a pretty good gig enough though I have to deal with a lot of people and things I despise. But I'll do anything for a buck, particularly if it allows me to make the people I can't stand miserable.

Kraft wouldn't give his child a job.

That is all.

Catnip for PatsFans......just stumbled across this website with the mission...... "We read him so you don't have to."

Dan Shaughnessy Watch

**** the CHB and his incessant need to rain on our collective parade. His act is old and so transparent its laughable.

Yeesh, I'd be mad too if I looked like that

Don't read the Globe, haven't for years, same goes for the Herald. These guys are simply muckrakers with nothing to offer and their sole purpose is to piss off New England sports fans. It's pathetic really that anyone makes a living trying to anger other people. . must be a sucky life.

Misery loves company

What an insulting article to the players and coaches of past Pats SB winning teams. This guy is a f***ing joke.

The Pats have had some incredibly difficult roads to the SB.... this guy is so proud of himself for coining the term "tomato can" that he uses it whenever possible, even when it doesn't apply.. there are no tomato can playoff teams lol

There are 32 teams, they all have to go thru the regular season gauntlet and then survive the playoffs and face off against the opposing conferences best team for the right to be Champion... last year they had to come back twice from 14 pts down to a Ravens team that was 2 years removed from winning the SB and a perennial playoff contender.. then they had to beat the NFLs beloved Colts/Luck, who had just beat the Broncos (who were in the SB prior year) lead by Manning.. then had to beat the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks, who statistically had one of the greatest defenses since the 85 bears, and they had to come back from a 10 pt deficit in the 4th quarter to do it

Talk about a total piece of s*** that likes hearing his own voice and intentionally tries to insult an entire fan base and a team of players and coaches that have battled and consistently been the best team in the NFL over 15 years, accomplishing the greatest football run ever in history

This guy needs someone to meet him out in the parking lott after class and kick the snot out of him. . Disrespectful douchebag!

Of course he is but it's a by-product of the Boston Globe culture and brand.... Maybe if the Globe started to write more thought-provoking pieces and not these moronic hack-jobs, and hire credible journalists who spend more than 10 minutes thinking about a story (this means you Shank, Ryan and Trollin) and not just this run-of-the-mill, 1/2 ass contrarian, trollistic essay pieces they just might get some respect around here.

I miss the Globe of the 1980's, really do. The Sunday sports pages brought an hour of true joy.

Dan Shaughnessy is upset because he's no longer part of the Boston/New England sports story.

He's in hiding now due to his fear of being beat up by mobs of Patriots fans....where are you now Dan?

1980's fall Sundays

Big family breakfast spent reading the paper together (I got the sports section first)
Church
Yard work/play
Football on TV
Sunday dinner

Good times...

Talk about tomato cans, i don't see any difference when it comes to journalism, or lack there of.

This guy is so ****ing Boston it hurts. I mean I was just looking at this pic and the 180054Giant jingle started playing from somewhere deep below the earth and summoned forth a crack in the earth's crust from which poured several stocky white dudes in Bruins shirts sporting bald heads, goatees and Dropkick Murphy's tattoos along with several drunk, profanity spewing girls named Amber or Megan wearing halter tops that show off their c-sections scars.

When you are the best team or right up there with the best team(s) you will usually be better than your opponent. Not the Patriots fault and it doesn't make the teams they are playing unworthy of being there.

IMO the Pats have only lucked out and played a significantly worse team in these cases .

2005 - Jax (div)
2012 - Denver (div)
2013 - Hou (div)
2014 - Indy (div)
2015 - Indy (AFCCG)

So maybe 5 times in 29 games (in the Brady/BB era) they played a team i felt like they were clearly 2 weight classes above. It is more uncommon than common for them to get an easy opponent in the final 8 or later.

Also is 5/29 overly lucky? Every year there is almost always at least 1 or 2 team in the final 8 that probably are big time underdogs that don' have the talent to justify them being there. So really I would say the Pats hit an unlucky streak early and are now getting back to par.

KC is no tomato can though. They are pretty good.
I think it's interesting that of 31 other teams, a very select few beat the Brady Pats in the playoffs:

Baltimore
NY teams
Denver/Manning teams

That's it.
