Ryan Fitzpatrick --> Texans.. Guess no to Mallet

Mallett will have to wait until he is a FA for a chance to play somewhere.

I don't understand what everyone sees in Mallet? Every year he gets trade rumours, every year they are shot down by Bill, every time I see him play I see a cannon arm and some decent accuracy but poor decisions.

But I must admit, I was excited about the prospect of him going to Houston. Did anyone else read about the rumours of Mallett -> Houston, Houston's 2nd -> Carolina, Steve Smith -> New England?

"Mallet for #33!" has been the unofficial battle-cry of the mock draft thread since Gil Brandt first whimsically speculated about it like a month ago.

It is also the likely lowest transition tag level that Mallett will command in 2015. Thus a subsequent 3rd round compensation pick when lost, or Pats price if kept after next season.

May I suggest reviewing

as I am not sure that you know the difference between a RFA and a UFA or realize that Mallett will be an UFA after this year.

In order for the Pats to get a 3rd comp pick in 2016 he would have to sign a contract in 2015 that averages at least 7, maybe 8 million a year.

Very doubtful that someone signs him to anything that expensive in my opinion, which is likely your point.

I think he could be looking at something in the range of 1/2 of that, at best; particularly after some of the deals we've seen for guys like Cassel, Vick, Schaub, etc.

The only thing we really know about Mallett is that he'll almost certainly be somewhere else in 2015, where he'll be in a position to compete for more playing time. I think some are really overrating his opportunities and potential to be an NFL starter judging by many of the comments I've been seeing.

You would be paying that price, if BB were as dumb as the Draftnik posters here, who would trade Mallett for another draft pick.

They NEVER include replacing him with another body. It seem the going price for a realistic, backup QB is around $4-5 million a year now, judging by the Cassell and Fitzpatrick deals.

It is also the likely lowest transition tag level that Mallett will command in 2015. Thus a subsequent 3rd round compensation pick when lost, or Pats price if kept after next season.

BB gets to keep $4 million in CAP for 2014 paying Mallett under a
$ million. Essentially the same CAP "savings" that a renegotiated Wilfork deal might achieve, with no fuss.

I think guys like Fitzpatrick, Vick, Cassel, Schaub, etc aren't good examples of the typical "backup QB" position--by any stretch.

They are all basically journeyman vets who have the capacity to start in a pinch at any given time, due to the uncertainty of their teams QB1 situations. They are also falling in the range of 2.5 to 5 million dollars per year, with Cassel at the highest end--since he's almost guaranteed to be starting at least some of the games, if not most in 2014 over Ponder.

Even in a worst case scenario, they may offer QB1(b) status, and "push" the guy in front of them like Geno Smith, Christian Ponder, etc to either do better, or ride the bench for a handful of games.

If we're looking at the truer definition of backup QB positions, we're looking at salaries much lower than these examples, and I'm not as sure as some that I'd include Ryan Mallett in this grouping as of yet.

To me, Mallett is a really odd kind of case in some ways when trying to predict what could happen to him, at least aside from the fact that he'll almost surely go somewhere else where he'll have better odds/opportunities to compete for more playing time. Other than that, we really have no idea if he's a QB1 or a QB3-4. It's very much up in the air.

For what it's worth, I do agree with your thought that it's better to keep him for the 2014 season at the price he commands; but I highly doubt Belichick would be replacing him with anything of a backup who'd be much more expensive.

Ryan Mallett is worth a second round pick if a team trades a second round pick to us for him.

Re: The Law of PatsFans Forum

Which won't happen. Seriously, give up getting anything of value for Mallett. If they get a 6th for him I'd take it.

We are so blessed to have people like you who know absolutely everything despite having nothing to base that knowledge off of.

Re: The Law of PatsFans Forum

There is no way Ryan Mallet makes the team next year.

......and within 4 hours on a Saturday afternoon, a Mod will stumble onto thine own thread and mergest such with existing Mallet thread.

So it is written....so it shall be. Amen.

Lol hilarious. Wish the draft was in April ugh. Can't wait another month. When does the NFL release the schedule? Pats better play broncos week 5 or after

How about fans that go watch him in camp and the pre season? How about ex-football players that have seen him and talked to players and coaches on the team about Mallett - they all certainly have something to say - and it's almost all uniformly not good when it comes to Mallett.

He's big, lumbering, appears slow to make his reads, has god awful footwork, but has that potent arm. Sometimes a sow's ear is a sow's ear.

And yet Bill Belichick doesn't seem to be worried about Mallett or his inevitable departure.

Any God who thinks Mallet could be traded for a second round pick, is certainly a fallible God.

Not that I disagree, but Rich Hill the editor at Pats Pulpit reported that he was told by two people that the Patriots have turned down second round picks for him in the past.

Per two individuals that I greatly respect, the Patriots have turned down offers of a second round pick for back-up quarterback Ryan Mallett. Twice.

I wonder where these rumors came from, and what the motivation behind them was.

There are links in there. The two people are Ethan Hammerman and Justis Mosqueda. I've had enough interaction with Ethan to believe that he's trustworthy, but for the sake of your argument, Andy has made it clear that he doesn't believe a word out of either of them.

I asked Ethan when did the Broncos made their trade offer. He never responded. Make of it what you will. For myself, I have my doubts about the veracity of those reports.
