Post-Game: Patriots vs. New Orleans

Overall for the first preseason game without the first line players in the game we did well.

I'd love to see JG go a full quarter in the pre-season with a full rotation of Edelman, Lewis, Amendola, Hogan, Gronk and Bennett. He and Bennett looked like they were on the same page. Hogan looked great in camp when I was there last week, and that was after he dinged his shoulder. Maybe next Thursday.

At the moment I see only 4 potential PS guys who might be claimed off waivers:
Derby, J.Jones, KGH and Karras (half of the league suffering @OL)
So Id rather have them on 53.

I thought he did too.

My main issue with him was that on a few of his runs he ran laterally and not towards the line, made a cut and took the yards. On a couple of runs the line got blown off the ball. On two of his runs he didn't trust the opening off the guard and center and took it outside. If he took it to the middle, he would have made the 3rd and 1 and on the other he would have made about 3 yards but instead was a no gainer.

I don't know if because he thinks that hes lighter he can be quicker to the outside off the tackle but he is not. Fears needs to beat that into him.

If he can pretend he is Antowain Smith for a year I will be satisfied.
I saw it differently. I saw Blount running to the hole and when there was no hole there he stutter stepped and cut back. You can't criticize the RB when the hole is plugged. He would get criticized by the coachjng staff if he just ran into a hole that isn't there because fans complain about "dancing running backs".

I know it's pre-season, but there are a lot of people who weren't able to watch the game because we were out of market.

Looks like our defense showed up in a big way. 2 Defensive TDs.. One on an interception by Collins. The other by Trey Flowers on a fumble recovery.

Looking at the play-by-play, things started slow.. The Running game seemed to get going in the 2nd half.. How much of it was Gaffney and how much of it was just bad play by the New Orleans D?

Sucks to hear about Mitchell.

NFL.com had a great video of the White run.. busted open by Mason and Stork on the screen. Sure looked to me like White was in based on the video..

So, what was the good and what was the bad?
Stork and Shaq deserve mention but so does Cam Fleming, For all the ****, he gets here it should be mentioned how big that hole it was for Tyler Gaffney, You could drive a moving van into that hole, So Kudos to Cam Fleming as well as Shaq Mason too!

I remember on draft day the commentators opined that Seattle was going to be really upset with the KGH pick, as they were ready to pick him.

Yeah, he likely wouldn't clear waivers.

QB - still a lot of work to be done. Its true JG didnt have any of the weapons beside Bennett before Mitchell came in and not even 2 sec time from OL but that doesnt make it right taking some horrible decisions. Turning into RB instead of at least sliding was just irresponsible and BB was red on the screen. Id personally kick JGs ass if he did that to me.

RB - Id like to meet in person the reporters from TC saying Blount looks “nimble“. What is the opposite of nimble then? White and Bolden fighting good for their roster spots. Ignoring the TD (which will be good for his self confidence) Gaffney went for it every time with no hesitation, reasonably good vision. Id like to see him more in the first parts of the game. Im sorry for the kid but Iosefa doesnt belong. Develin will be really important if we want to run with this guys.

WR - maybe its a fierce competition but apart from Mitchell im not impressed and I guess it will be easy to bring anyone to PS. Dobson playing hide and seek is just sad.

TE - Bennett is a swiss knife. I hope as durable as well. Derby looks great. Hope to see him against 1st's.

OL - Thuney was the only one deserving of Patriot uniform out there. For the moment I would by all means keep Karras. At least he can stand up to guys. Solder and Andrews looked like new additions to our OL misery.

DL - Expected a bit more pushing the line from DT's but a very solid group of 5 (including Kuhn & Valentine)

DE - finnaly a positive surprise by all McC, Long and the man of the match Flowers. Trading CJ looks like the least of our problems. Also liked the schemes. This D could be spectacular to watch.

LB - to me JC and DH are simply the best LB duet in NFL. What a privilege to watch them together. But the biggest positive surprise of the day in my eyes goes to Humber. LB and ST. I just dont see this guy cut. KGH looking small but feisty, always where the action is, sometimes naive and out of position, but a joy to watch. There just should be a place for him and it looks the coaches think so as well. Another positive surprise was Elandon Roberts, very solid 2nd half.

CB - like with WR's not too impressed. Most of them looked small and lost. Only both Jones's looked good to me. Biggers and D.Roberts (unfortunately) I just dont see.

S - Richards still struggles with his athletic (dis)abilities but I love his football intelligence. I really liked the moment when after Leblanc's interception he ran between him and NO receiver so that he doesn't touch him and urged (pushed) him to run for gain (the play was stopped but i like his awareness).

So for the moment our two big weaknesses from last year promise more suffering for us and JG.
What I really want him to learn by next week is to throw the ball away and himself on the ground.
What does Dobson playing hide and seek mean?

The defensive line is pretty good, but the defensive backs need to step up their game big time, I don't want us to have to score a boat load of points to keep up. Flowers seems to be promising, he is quick on the feet and very strong.

Jimmy G, only first pre season game, hope he starts getting better by getting rid of the ball quickly.

It looked like Brisett looked much more comfortable than Gimmy in the pocket, and boy that kid has an arm! Obviously he is a 2 year project at least but don't be surprised if he ends up challenging for the QB position when TB retires. He reminds me of a Cam Newton.

Our O-line has ways to go, as of right now they just can't run block at all, they gotta improve drastically, the good thing is we are only on week own of the pre season, plenty of time to address this area.

Outside of Hightower and Collins we are very light on LB and the skill level has a huge drop off, McLellin needs much more improvement.

Lastly Bennett is gonna be a monster, the guy is very quick, quicker than what I've seen in Chicago. If he an TB get on the same page we are going to be in for a treat with two tight end plays.

With Mitchell out and the rest of WRs hiding I expect he gets Hogan vs Bears.
JG dearly missed someone in the slot yesterday. Its not that easy to replace Edelman ...

Dobson was unimpressive. A guy with his size and speed should show up a lot more than he does. Disappointed that he struggles to get open when the pads are on.
Didn't he catch 3-4 passes in a half?
What are you expecting?

it wasn't a great block by Fleming, he actually whiffs on #63 Tapp. luckily Derby was able to knock him to the ground.

I was impressed with JG's performance although he got no TDs, he also threw no INTs. He also threw for 168 yards in one half which projects out to over 300 yards for game. Picked up some first downs. I'd say not bad at all and should give us more confidence for those 4 games.
Also was impressed with the Mitchell kid. Good luck with the injury. Was shocked to hear he be bacck in about 4 weeks.
Our defense looked awesome at times. But NO still scored 22 points. Still overall had a decent night.

A couple of quick outs and something over the middle...meh, with the other JAG receivers out there, he should garner more looks.

Derby has to make the roster he was my binkie.
Would like to see Bolden get a chance at more carries he looked quicker.
Would like to see Foster in a game situation.
Would like to see Deandre Carter and Lucien more next outing.
Would like to see more of a pressure package I expect we will come week 1.
I want Roberts to make this team being he is the tallest corner.
Besides Jordan Richards being smart and savy and im sure a good kid he doesnt look like he has the range to chase anyone down or the ball skills to hawk the secondary would rather Leblanc take his roster spot damn the draft slotting.
I didnt notice Vareen which I guess was a good thing.
My feed froze alot so it was difficult to evalaute properly to be fair.

it was a completion.

right foot down:

left foot down:

Ok, so he had both feet in. But like I said, didn't our guy have a very similar play last year with both feet in and they still called it incomplete? I swear we did.

The commentary on Brisett by the fans remind me of the commentary on Cassell's competition in 2008, Everyone thought he outplayed Casell and would make the team over Cassell. If you watched closely he never read the Defense, threw the ball to his first receiver, whether open or not, and narrowly and luckily avoided a couple of picks. He was cut and no one picked him up. Jacoby might be a QB in two or three years but not now. Cassell went 11-5.

What does Dobson playing hide and seek mean?

I didn't see Dobson getting open much, especially in the 1st q. When Mitchell came in it was another game.
After that there were some remarks that Dobson took BB's comment about staying healthy too literally and I couldn't help but agreeing.

In any case this might be his last chance (and its a very big and lucky chance with everybody injured) so he needs to show up much more.

Dobson has all the tools would be sick to see him come to form in another uni.
