Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

Did this really require a new thread?
What do you expect from a video game action hero...mr nathan drake.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

I thought it was Asante Samuel who missed the int?

I believe you are corect...my bad but point still remains.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

Like a breath of fresh air, similar to trading Maroney last year. Don't dislike them personally, but don't like the disappointing play.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

No. Every bad play in Patriots' history was now caused by Meriweather. Can you believe he threw that INT on the opeing drive against the Jets last year? That's when I thought I might hate him. But on last Saturday I knew for sure!

Sorry...I was mistaken about that and have admitted it.
I'm still glad he's gone.

Meriweather did, indeed, drop a pick in that final drive, just before the Samuel miss. It isn't as talked about since he had to jump forward a little bit, and it didn't hit him straight in the hands, but he could've ended the game right there.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

He was NOT good against the run.

The only time he didn't avoid contact was against a defenseless receiver or blowing up a smaller RB on a screen pass.

As a matter of fact, he was so terrible against the run that Belichick was having him play in the box much more often this training camp and preseason than he ever had before in his career. And no, I'm not happy that Meriweather is gone. Shades of Seymour. I only hope that Sergio Brown can fill in admirably in Meriweather's place.

I think Maroney's a good comparison. I expected alot out of both being first round picks, and felt they were okay starters while they were here but not what they should have been. Haven't missed Maroney one bit and don't think I will miss Merriweather.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

Until we see what his replacement does, it's silly to be glad that he's gone.

Yes he certainly did. In my opinion (not knocking his overall play here like many others) Meriweather's dropped pick was actually easier than Samuel's dropped pick, b/c Samuel was trying to keep his feet in bounds too.

Then again, I have tried very hard to suppress those memories, so I may be rehashing it incorrectly. I certainly do remember Meriweather's chance at the INT though.

I was anticipating the pick too, as I was envisioning Peyton tossing one up for Law or Harrison, as usual.

The sad reality though, was that it wasn't Peyton, and it sure wasn't Law or Harrison.

I'm just glad that BB is finally trying to do something about the pitiful pass defense of the last few years.

It's not just scheme and coaching. The talent of the players has a lot to do with it. After last season, I think BB finally gave up on the players that he had back there, and as a result Wilfork is now the longest tenured player on defense.

At this point, any changes to the pass defense and pass rush, are a good thing.

It couldn't get much worse than it has been, with all the underacheivers that have been on the defense in the past few years.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

He avoided contact. He played scared. The only time he'd lay a big hit was on a defenseless receiver.

Made mental mistakes. Blew coverages (Saints game anyone?). Couldn't shed a block to save his life. Had a poor attitude. Seemed more concerned with being the cool guy, rather than the hard working football guy. Seemed somewhat casual and nonchalant. I think BB didn't want that influence affecting the younger players like Chung, McCourty, Ras-I, etc.

I think he'll actually have a much better career in Chicago where he should be able to freelance. Discipline is #1 with Belichick, and Meriweather always seemed to lack it.

I couldn’t stand him, he was the Maroney of the Secondary, good riddance.

Pretty much. Also LOL @ your earthquake avatar.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

First rule of posting on patsfans.com:

If he has left the team he was always a piece of sh!t.

Except in the cases of those players who are declared to be pieces of sh!t while they are on the roster.

In those cases, proceed to rule #2 which states that once the player leaves there shall be much angst over how the team will survive at that position now that he's gone; questions as to why he was let go (especially when so-and-so is still on the roster); and this move will be added to a list of other debatable decisions that Belichick has made over his career and all will immediately be rehashed and questioned.

I was just kidding.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

yes.............

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

Meriweather was released for one simple reason. He got beat out by Brown and Barrett, both of whom had a better camp and preseason than Meriweather did. BB went with the better players.

Re: Anyone else glad that Meriweather is gone?

.....and they were not freelancing out there.. doing there own thing ....

I though Merriweather was the difference between having a so so secondary and having a good secondary last year. he hit people who came across the middle of the zone, and he was the only DB willing to lay a guy out for crossing the middle. He wasn't a good cover guy, and he wasn't a good scheme guy, but he made a big difference last season. We will see if they return to the worst secondary in the NFL this year or is there somebody else willing to hit people who dare to split the zone in the middle of the field.

Why won't anybody trade with us?

Meriweather is getting $3.25 for one year from the bears. He was going to get $1.65 million here.

By trading with us, the Bears could have saved $1.6M in cap space. You can get a pretty decent player with that money. Its probably worth a fifth round pick. Surely the Bears would be better off now if they had sent us a 7th round pick for Meriweather. They also could have been sure of getting their man, instead of having to risk free agency.

Why didn't this deal happen? Are some franchises simply scared of getting burned by trading with Bill Belichick?

nah...it's the compressed time period because of the strike...all the teams are being forced to cut players they otherwise would have traded for picks in a normal year, just to get their rosters set for the opener...that's why we're seeing all this vulturism...
