AJ, Doubs and Hollins are ahead of him. They are prioritizing Williams at X over him.

That makes Boutte the WR5. If they play Pop ahead of him he is WR6.

As the roster is currently constituted, he is a 5-10 snap player here.

If two of the aforementioned are injured, he'll play more.

Since that is unlikely, that is why he was traded.

Glad Boutte is going to an organization that is likely to appreciate him. Clearly deserves better than he’s been treated here over his tenure starting with Belichick. Dude did nothing but work his ass off and become a legit receiver in this league.

not mentioned yet, at least from what I can tell, is that perhaps the Pats did try to extend Boutte before signing Doubs, and Boutte did not agree to their terms, preferring to bet on himself in his walk year to have a big year. Therefore, the player asked to be traded because they could not make a deal, and the team signed Doubs because they could not make a deal

Pierce got a huge bag because he was much higher volume, but look at the other players in that range. Their volume isnt that much higher.

The weird thing is that you're saying downfield throwing/catches that are contested... well, you can't rely on it.

And I'm saying that Boutte has shown the repeated and consistent ability to do well in these situations relative to the league.

In fact, for years we were chasing this type of player, for throws to the boundary, and now we had one.

To me this is death by metrics. This is why I mentioned Jakobi. If you go back to the Smith-Schuster thread, the vast majority preferred him because he got more separation than Jakobi and had a lot more YAC.

Sometimes you have to just appreciate good receiving skills and forget about the metrics.

Didn't BB Traded for DeVante Parker for that very reason *contested balls*. How many times did the CB come down with it instead of 6'3 DeVante? Parker was very ineffective even at his height. Boutte plays Bigger than his Statue: I am sure Boutte will get many opportunities with Stroud.

It basically takes a position they were think in and make it less of a need. They have WR depth. I would like to have seen a better draft pick, but I don't have a ***** about the player in return. Fills a need.

The Pats told Boutte and his agent what they thought when they traded a first for AJ Brown and paid Doubs.

If your agent and the team aren’t discussing a new contract when you don’t have anymore guaranteed money, then there’s nothing left to say.

Either way, I don't think the trade surprised anybody.

See I didn't see his, Wolf's, or Vrabes' press conference on it. I saw it reported in the sports media but not sourced... sort of "sources say" stuff. Again, I'm not shocked and I doubt Boutte is. I'm still not 100% sure who wanted the divorce, but what's important at this point is we don't have to somehow pay him alimony

It’s not what the player perceives his skill level is… they all think they’re great. It’s snaps. Boutte was a starter and played among the most snaps on the team the last two years. He thinks he should be starting now… NE disagreed.

More like, might have thought he could work in with the existing group. Doubs and Brown have been there a while. The point isn't that he'd be a no. 1 or 2 WR., but that he'd be a no. 3 receiver. this year, for no. 3 money. And WRs get hurt.

I made all the arguments against keeping him a couple months ago, including this one. If we need any of last year's big contributors, it's Pop, who's a slot guy. So there's that.

It's absolutely legit to call into question the trade value the team received in exchange for Boutte -- Or Boutte's contract., if you like.

We got bupkes, based on the knowns. I am assuming that our side sees some value in Reed. That value is an unknown to me. It does not show up in his resume to date. It might show up in our team's evaluation of him.

But your argument seems to be that we did fine even if Reed sucks.

Did I miss it, or did you make an argument asserting his value in the trade?

Or was the argument that the value part was the 7th rounder in 2028?

At ground, is that your argument?

Do you think Reed's good but we don't know it?

Do you think that a 7th round pick in 2028 is good compensation?

Or do you think we accepted very low value perceiving ourselves to be over a barrel?

I worry about him in HOU. Hes coming in late. He does have some experience in the WC offense but Stroud sucks. He won't start but should get the snaps he deserves as their WR3.

It helps to think that we get 3 cost-contained years of Reed for a 1 year rental of a guy who was going to be our #4 receiver. Plus we get a flyer on a 7th round special teamer in 2 years.

So... nothing to get all hyped up about in a positive way, but nothing to make you say that we got robbed, either.

The best you could get? I'd guess, yes, since signs point to him being on the block for the past several months.

We’ll see. It’s not like Boutte was coming along under good QBs himself. Until Maye he was working to develop under some of the worst QB play in the league.

Stroud’s better than Mac, Zappe, Brissett or whoever the hell else was throwing him the ball during that stretch. If Stroud gets the ball in his vicinity Boutte can make plays.

Drake Maye, one of the best players in the league, trusted Boutte and went to him in key situations over Pop or Hollins or whichever other WR not named Diggs. I think people here are very much underrating the connection between a QB-WR.

Last season it genuinely felt like Drake didn’t quite trust Pop Douglas enough to make him a higher volume target. I’ll be interested to see if/how that changes this season.
