Mayo negotiations + OC interviews next week

Mike Reiss hit another one. I’ll just note that Reiss posted this article on Sunday, and at the time the only public rumblings were about BOB and Kingsbury. Reiss is the most plugged in Patriots reporter in town. His “speculation“ is clearly based on discussions with people…. His miss so far is Klemm.
Who will Belichick consider as he begins search for Patriots' OC?

You guys are talking about how Bill only interview's guys he's connected to in some way. What is McArdell's connection? Not being a smart azz, I didn't there was one, which is why I am intrigued by the possibility. Not saying OMG he's the guy.
Played for Bill when he was CLE HC.

I would think a leadership role would be a top consideration. Which makes the decision to appoint Patricia/Judge even more baffling.
No, not really. Former HCs, both FoBs. Looking back, it was an abject failure. Hindsight is always 20/20, and there was plenty of people here who didn't love the decision then, but if it worked they would have been praised. It'll be interesting to see if it ends up being BoB, and it was him all along, and they just kept the seat warm.

One thing to consider with these "Bill is only interviewing guys he has connections to" posts, is that when you've been coaching in the league for almost 50 years, and you've had something like 50+ assistant coaches go on to other jobs in the NFL and college, there aren't going to be many people in the league that you can't play the Six Degrees of Separation game with.
There are plenty of young coaches that came up in different systems not connected with Bill, though I get your point.

??

Outside of Jonnu Smith's contract, the money was not bad at all. It's one bad contract.

Agholor's was not bad and only 2 years. You see average WRs getting 2x what Agholor did now. And Agholor came off a big season when he got that contract.

Bourne and Mills were signed at very low money comparatively.

Matthew Judon has been a hit.

The only thing holding Henry back has been the offensive coaching and some of the QB play.

It was not as bad as people make it.

Though the Jonnu Smith signing is horrendous.

All in all, you got an All-Pro level edge rusher, a starting CB and for 1 yr. your best WR, both at very short money.
Aside from Judon, this is all wrong and called out at the time. Every concern brought up at the time has been vindicated. Terrible FAcy. I'm sure Mr. Kraft agrees.

No hindsight. There were dozens of people predicting this would be a failure that were shouted down as negative nancies because Bill knows best and coaches can coach any position. If the reason they were picked was just to keep the seat warm, it makes it even worse.

Two WR coaches. I wonder why they don't interview Troy. Hmmm, not a good look for him.
Some of that is coaching experience at the NFL. For instance Jefferson has been a NFL WR coach for over 15 years. Troy has been coaching in the NFL for about 3.

Troy. Hmmm, not a good look for him.
Why?

Is there all kinds of media hubbub regarding Troy Brown and his desire for another role, more responsibilities, looking at other more responsibility jobs across the league? Is there any reason he can't be content in his current role, looking forward to next year?

Or is it just more "smear" tactics without any basis that's entirely circumstantial in nature? Tear the man down!

More mob/twitter mentality..."while we're guillotining Patricia and Judge, let's get Caley and Brown up there too..."

Not really, no, if BoB had an agreement in place once his commitment to Alabama ended. They didn't want to bring in someone who was going to be chitcanned after 1 year to bring in BoB after. Prop up a FoB or two and pay them peanuts, then get the guy they want anyway.

Agholor was a terrible deal. In 2 years he had 68 catches for 835 yards and 5 TDs. He had a $7 million cap hit in 2021 and almost $15 million in 2022. In two years he didnt even live up to his numbers from his "big season". No way around it, this was a terrible deal.

Bourne was actually looking like a steal until he apparently pissed in Patricia's Cheerios so Bill's little experiment bungled his (and many others) production this year. Mills got middle of the road money and was a middle of the road player so not a bad deal there. They could save $5 mill on the cap so they might release him and let him test the market.

Judon has definitely been a hit.

Henry outside of a month at the end of last season has been bad. For our $15 million cap hit this year we got 41 catches, 500 yards, and 2 TDs. Even though he is the better of our two overpaid tight ends he will likely be the one on the outs this offseason since cutting him saves $10.5 million on the cap (with $5 million in dead cap) while Jonnu will be a $17 million cap hit and would be a whopping $19 million in dead cap if he were cut. The tight end situation has been a disaster since Gronk left. Bill wasted a couple of third round picks on guys two guys who spent more time as healthy scratches than playing in actual games. Then a year later he spends money like a drunken sailor on shore leave to get the production at the position from non-existent to underwhelming. Lots of resources have been thrown at TE to still have a complete mess.

All in all the 2021 free agency class wasn't great. We got a great pass rusher, an average corner, a bad receiver who they like and a good receiver who they don't like and two bad tight ends.

Just heard on the radio. The Pats have requested permission to speak to Keenan McCardell of the Vikings for OC.
So far, all the OC candidates interviewed or scheduled for an interview have no play calling experience. BB doesn't need an OC who requires on the job training. Leftwich is interesting. Former NFL QB who could mentor Mac and/or Zap and has experience calling plays.

I take it you don't hang out in the Tom Brady forum :D

Bill O'Brien and Mac Jones working together. These two GOATs in charge of the offense in 2023 and beyond.

That's a lot of sugar coating. A massive amount of money that netted one impact player, a bunch of underperforming players and a 500 record.
