Matt Patricia likely to take Lions or Giants HC job (UPDATE)

I think it’s a big mistake especially in the long run for a HC to come in and leave it to someone else to run the offense while they worry about the defense.

That’s not what a HC is. Being a lead coordinator puts to much of your responsibility in someone else’s hands. Matty P needs to implement HIS offense and HIS defense, not coach the defense and let someone else run half his team.

This is another reason belichick is do successful. While he coached the defensive side of the ball as an assistant he is in charge of everything as HC.
When Tom Brady suddenly became the QB in his second year, who coached him? Bill Belichick did.

I can remember joe gibbs back in the day coaching the redskins offense and letting richie pettibone coach the defense.

Agree. Sean Payton won a championship running the offense and had a great DC

Only coaches I know that abdicated all defensive responsibility are Billick and the Ravens and he kept Lewis to run things, Kubiak in DEN with Wade and McVay and Wade again.

Yea Gibbs was a Coryell guy who had no use for defense. Pettibon was there forever.

I was hoping he would stay. Wishful thinking. Like the science aspect. We will miss you genious. But come back home when you can. Home is always here.

Didn't Ditka do that as well in 1985 with Buddy Ryan? Or did he have some involvement?
Yes, that was Buddy Ryan’s defense full stop. Buddy predated Ditka in Chicago as DC by several years and the story goes that the defensive players (who made up a good chunk of the eventual ‘85 squad) basically demanded under threat of mutiny that Ryan be retained when Ditka was hired and they were very clearly O/D separated and battled openly the entire time they were together. It wasn’t how Ditka wanted/planned/organized the staff necessarily, it was just how it was. The D was Buddy’s.

But Gibbs hired pettibone. He was his guy.

If Matty P gets the job contingent on the lions telling him it’s cooters offense that’s a very bad way to walk in

Which gives rise to a fundamental question: is the vacant space in Landon Collins' head greater than the cap space he takes up?

Discuss among yourselves.

Giants will have some issues. They have so much money tied up to that defense. Beckham's gonna want 17 million a year and Collins over 10. They can cut eli but they won't save that much.

Abdicating offensive responsibility is even worse. Look at what happen to lovie smith in Tampa.

Actually if Matty p walks in there it is easy. He can control the controllables. He can work on a defense and easily upgrade the offense drafting a lead three down back. And draft on defense. It would be very easy for him to go there. More difficult in new York in my opinion.

He prefers the giants? I hope he doesn't go there.

Sounds like it given his family situation. If I am to believe the media idiots.

I do know this, the only emotion on a fundamental level shown by Bellicheck was when he did documentary visiting giants stadium. He almost cried. I have never seen him come close to that in any other setting.

You could see him mentoring that....

If you don't know what I am saying it was in one of the football life documentaries.

I think the poster was talking about Matty P preferring NYG not BB.

A good deal of what made BB the coach he is today was developed in NY. I don't think it's surprising he's emotional. But I think it's more like getting emotional seeing your childhood home. It might mean something to you, but you don't want to move back into your parent's basement.

Speak for yourself. Once you get past the bugs, there’s cheap beer and nudie mags, galore.

Even as someone who loves having my own home, I've never really gotten the "mother's basement!" line as an insult. It's basically

"You live with the person who loves you most in life, you have in-home help if you get sick, you have in-home help with pets/babysitting, your rent goes towards paying off your family's home (which theoretically means you're actually increasing your inheritance), you aren't sharing a building with a bunch of strangers (unlike those who live in apartments) and you probably get to save up more money than people who moved out of their family home, because the rent's probably cheaper. Ha Ha!"

I’m just doing some early AM wise cracking, but I hear what you’re saying. A person could be in a worse situation than living with loved ones, that’s for sure. I suppose our society has a stereotype where they imagine an overweight nerd playing video games all day, but if either my mom or my mother in law were to get ill, I’d surely want to move them in my home as opposed to an assisted living facility.

Unfortunately, I don’t even have warm beer and nudie mags in my own basement, as my wife threw out my mini fridge because she claimed that it was icing over in the back (I call bull crap). Getting even a small wedge of real kitchen fridge space is easier said than done. I’m currently “allowed” to keep around 4 beers in there, right next to the soy sauce and Hershey’s syrup.
