ESPN is making me hate Brees

It was a blowout it was going to go on too long anyway.

All the more reason not to add a superfluous ceremony smack in the middle of it. Let the the people interested in that watch for 8 extra minutes after the game. Don't make people interested in the game wait through it.

But this isn't new to the NFL, or sports in general. I was there at Texas Stadium back in 2002 when Emmitt Smith broke the all time rushing record. It happened while picking up a 1st down in the middle of a drive, and the game stopped just like last night.

If Brady had broken it (and probably will eventually), he would have trotted to the sidelines, gotten some handshakes, thanked the guys for about twenty seconds, POSSIBLY acknowledged the crowd with a wave, then sat down on the bench to study the defensive scheme from the previous drive. Don’t even deny it - you know that’s what he would have done.

It has more to do with the saccharine emotional triumph from Brees, with him crying in joy and bringing his kids into a rather absurd celebration. That coupled with passing yards being essentially an irrelevant stat made it quite silly. It did suggest to many what’s has been thought for a long time, that the Saints and Brees have really, really cared about this value-less record, perhaps even more than actually winning games. I remember not long ago Vinny Testaverde was 4th all-time in passing yards. All it means is you throw a lot of passes. Just to illustrate how irrelevant it is to skill and actually tends to favor quarterbacks who make more mistakes who get blown out more to get empty passing yards, Brees will almost certainly be surpassed by guys like Matt Stafford and Matt Ryan.

It's a big record. In the NFL all-time pantheon of quarterbacks, Brees has thrown for the most yards and is close to throwing for the most TDs. That's why the NFL chooses to have a stoppage in play to commemorate them. Your ire needs to be taken up with them. Brees and his family were simply rightfully excited about this and merely took advantage of what the NFL was willing to do for them. Furthermore, being excited about an individual passing record =/= Brees and Payton caring more about individual records than winning. That's a false equivalence.

Anybody who found themselves grinding their teeth at a HOF QB who had nothing handed to him--who overcame his physical limitations and reached the top via intelligence, leadership and an unbelievable work ethic--because of the extended media love-fest for him...has just experienced the rest of the country's feelings toward Tom Brady for the past dozen years straight. It must be pretty galling from the outside! Good to be on the inside, then.

Yeah, it's borne out of jealousy. This board tends to get fanatical when another QB besides Brady gets any kind of accolades. Relax, people. Most people know Brady is the GOAT.

If we're talking passing yards, let's consider TOTAL passing yards and include playoffs...
Those totals are:

1) Peyton Manning 71940 reg season- 7339 playoffs—total 79279
2) Brett Favre ------71838 reg season-5855 playoffs---total 77693
3) Tom Brady-----67418 reg season—10226 playoffs- total 77644
4) Drew Brees-----72103 reg season—4209 playoffs-total 76112
Brady should pass Favre this week and hopefully pass Peyton in another 6 weeks to be the total passing yards leader
Doesn't this stat render the Brees one meaningless? I don't mean that he shouldn't be recognized for his accomplishments (maybe with a quick in-game nod and in earnest in the locker room after the game), but I admit I was confused when they started pumping this issue at the start of the game, as I thought Brady was closing in on the "most yards" in the NFL stat. In reality, Brees has the most regular season yards of any QB (a fact that was not mentioned [at least that I heard] in all the adulation). Yawn. There are three QBs that have more total yards than him and he ain't even close to catching one of them.

The record will stand for five years at absolute most and probably not that long. That’s why it isn’t really a big record. Agree to disagree.

As I said earlier in the thread, I hope Brees wins an MVP award and is worthy of an all-time great ranking. The passing yards stat is incredibly lame though. Consider there was barely a blurb when Brady broke Super Bowl and playoff passing yardage.

Just watched the highlights.

Lol.

So lame.

I don’t think Brady ever has or ever will accept a silly in-game celebration over a personal milestone.
Brady will celebrate with family, intimate friends (Magic Hands), Jim Gray, and the Facebook camera crew

Nor should there be, since reg season + playoffs (correctly) isn't an official record.

The NFL sure made a big deal when Fivehead “won” his 200th game to surpass Favre for most wins all-time, his last one in SB50. When it’s a media darling, playoff and regular season are recognized to for the narrative.

It’s just amazing that Brady has almost DOUBLE the Super Bowl and playoff passing yards and touchdowns of any other QB, and it makes it laughable that Brees gets a certificate and Cal Ripken like ceremony. Brady didn’t care, nor did the Patriots, and rightfully so. They may have made an announcement, but they certainly would never do a victory lap for hero worshipping. It seems to be in poor taste and Brady is too much of a team player to want that.

I’m not “insecure” or jealous. I like Brees. Brady’s status as GOAT is cemented. I just find the whole thing kind of bizarre and pathetic in regards to how emotional Brees was. It seemed like his entire career was for that moment when he passed a somewhat random marker of passing yards (which happens to have little correlation to winning.). I don’t recall seeing a player so emotional outside of winning a title or announcing retirement/final game. Most passing yards? Really? Lol.

Brees is a great QB but if you let me start a franchise with a 23 year old Brady/Peyton/Rodgers/Brees, Brees would be 4th pick.

You can't be top 5 all time when you're 4th best in your own era.

Brees has had 4 sub .500 seasons out of 5 between 2012-2016, the reason people like Brees so much is he barely has a rivalry with anyone so there's no animosity against him nationally.

I would much rather have Brees than Peyton Manning. Brees wasn't a playoff choker and played at an elite level on his Super Bowl run. Peyton was carried to both of his rings and played like garbage on both of his Super Bowl runs. He gagged against Brees's saints and the Seahawks.

Peyton played on loaded teams almost his entire career, and all he was able to do was set the records for total playoff losses and 0-1 playoff series. Brees was stuck on some pretty bad Chargers and Saints teams and was far more clutch.

To me, Peyton's legacy is effectively dead now that he doesn't have the passing record. Literally his only claim to fame is regular season volume passing, with the fig leaf of rings he got while playing below replacement level.

The NFL itself? Or the media (esp the nextwork televising the game)?

It is, it's how he gets society and fans to turn a blind eye to him sexually assaulting a trainer in University.

And going on to try to ruin her career on top of that.

And using his wife as a drug mule. "Allegedly."

Here is why Drew Brees is better than Peyton Manning: in 1 Super Bowl he threw for almost as many touchdowns as Peyton Manning did in all 4 of his.

it's at least a two man job... maybe even three.

I could say something fancy with words like eclipsing and pinnacle and blah blah blah.

But instead, who cares? He became the leading passer of all time, the NFL took 8 minutes for his family to celebrate a lifetime achievement with their father and husband.

Lighten up Francis.
