Anecdotally in Italy people didn't take the lockdowns seriously at first, continuing to gather instead of staying home. Unfortunately, they have the worse results right now (800 more deaths in last 24 hours).

The US also did not take this seriously at first and to this day people continue to gather (we've seen beach goers, FL Gov refuses to close down beaches, etc.).

The US growth pattern is tracking those of Italy. I hope whatever is happening now is enough to arrest the peak and flatten the curve.

Italy reporting 800 deaths a day and still growing exponentially.

US is 7X the size of Italy by population and on the same path, just a week or two delayed.

There are posters in this thread who think it’s panicking to say the US might have a death total in the thousands, total.

Imagine if 200,000 US Citizens were rounded up, brought into a slaughterhouse, and executed. Is that a drop in the bucket too?

No, that would be an outrage. We don't care how many of us die as much as we care about who causes it. We make very little noise about the thousands of us that we kill in automobiles every year, but if some small group of foreigners kills a few hundred of us, we will spend a $$B in response.

So what's beginning to emerge is that, IF:
  • the lessons from the 2016 pandemic simulation were paid attention to
  • then infrastructure and supplies would have been put in place so that "flattening the curve" would have been the opposite of what we needed to do, then,
  • hygiene habits would have been all that was called for
  • corona would have joined flu and created an awful winter health season, but not a disaster
  • we wouldn't have had to close down the economy at all. In fact the build out of infrastructure and scaling up of supply inventories would have been a positive to the economy,
  • fewer people would have died in the long run, because this economic downturn, and extreme social distancing (like closing schools) will kill people, too, by the thousands.
The ability for executive teams to listen, to take in new data that may not fit their expectations and mental models, is SO important. That's the biggest failure of this POTUS and his senior leadership team ("Only the best people" is what he promised us). When they ignored the message from 2016, the train left the station, because the opportunity to avoid this mess has a multi-year tail.

Uh...I don't recall you EVER broaching this subject on these threads ANYWHERE since 2016. It's as if you never knew anything at all about this current situation. Now if you're playing the "hindsight is 20/20" game that's fine but just SAY IT up front...and that goes for all of you speaking in absolutes on either side of this pandemic firestorm. The title of this thread is "CORONAVIRUS DISCUSSION" not "I hate/love Trump!". The virus is NOT partisan.

It's equally damning to Trump under either interpretation. If he meant Dem/media hoax, the "hoax" in that case was the claims that this was a calamity when he felt it really wasn't. He was accusing them of being political, not real.

It turns out the claims of calamity were totally true. So by calling that a hoax, he was encouraging his followers to not treat this as a crisis, just to live your normal lives. He was the one being political.

Oh for the love... I'm done dealing with this nonsense. From this point forward, I'll just start adding names to the foreheads of this image because typing out responses is pointless.

I'm open to suggestions of the most worthy.

Too many people downplaying this virus don’t understand that word

The second Covid started ramping up, I told friends that in terms of affected people, it’ll be :
1. China
2. US

It’s very sad. But your country is very populous. And there is nothing to gain politically by testing/counting cases.

I really hope things turn around soon, but I fear that “soon” is more of a dream than reality.

I don’t understand the people at bars, at beaches...

Do you have a "it's just the flu" image?

They are going through formal trials. Both the FDA guy and Fauci have said so. They can't just start dispensing drugs because the President "feels" it will work or because he is "right" a lot.

This is such nonsense. This is just a distraction from where the focus needs to be: testing, supplies, beds, capacity of the hospital infrastructure.
They are dispensing them RIGHT NOW in many centers. These are safe drugs approved for other uses. They can be used off label with no approval. They are several small studies showing benefit. Doctors are free to read the literature and use them for other uses. Plaquenil was used for SARS, which is why it was turned to here. It is being widely used for severe COVID disease here as we speak. Is there a large trial - no. We don’t have time. But no doctor is going to withhold a treatment to a desperately ill patient that he thinks works - if the patient agrees.

And then they ignored the message from their second simulation last year, too.

The problem with looking at percentages right now is that our health system is still not completely overwhelmed...it's stressed. If it pushes past and we have to make decisions about which patients to treat, you'll see those death numbers go way up. That's why looking at Italy is so important. They've reached that point in Italy. That's why the "flatten the curve" movement is so critical. It's to try and keep the system from reaching that point because the more we do it, the more lives will be saved. That's just simple math.
The other option is to increase capacity with more beds and equipment which is apparently what they are trying to do. How long will this take is key but at least its happening.

We could never have enough capacity for a huge epidemic. We have less than 50,000 ventilators in the country. If we needed 200,000 for a once in a hundred year event, you think we are going to store 150,000 somewhere? Let alone the staff to operate them.

If you cannot see the false equivalency in your supposition than there is no helping you. You are trying to hard now.

Some interesting stuff going on at NYC airports. Hard to pin down exactly what but it looms like all departures are cancelled due to staffing shortages in the tower due to 2 controllers testing positive.

You referred to 200,000 people dying as a drop in the bucket. Walking that one back instead of doubling down is the better option.

I heard they are converting 75,000 Anesthesia machines to ventilators.
