remember. 1 team drafted Brady and kept him. devoted An extra roster space toward having an extra QB
Again, had he gone undrafted, he would've signed with a team and eventually beat out the starting QB.

You don't know that. Belichick is like the only guy in the league who routinely lets undrafted guys or nobodies earn a starting job. Name me one other QB a 6th round pick or later, the last 20 years, out of a rotation of maybe 50 head coaches, who elevated a low pick or undrafted pick to become their starting QB.

Brady was a long shot without Belichick.

Marc Bulger and Tony Romo come to mind. I agree that in general Brady was a long shot though

Fair enough. So yea aside from having **** Vermeil or Bill Parcells as your coach no other QB without a high pedigree ever made it. And Romo waited 4 years to play. And neither of these guys won a ring. Without Belichick maybe Brady breaks through like Romo but the coach and rest of team aren't enough to be a champion.

BB is a great GM but he flops when he thinks to much during the draft. Sometimes it's better to draft the obvious need / player.

Malcolm Butler was working the fry station at Popeye's Chicken after college, when asked how many NFL teams called to inquire about him... he said only one.

BB has the best eye for talent in football. No GM is perfect because the draft is an imperfect process and because humans are unreliable. You're not frustrated at Bill's drafts, you're frustrated with the ephemeral nature of NFL careers and the crapshoot that is the draft. A career 300 hitter has had a great career, the draft is similar.

The average NFL career lasts 3 years... it's extraordinarily hard to make it. It's harder to make it after your body is wracked with injuries accumulated over years of college and high school, some guys no matter how talented are simply happy to get drafted and collect that first contract.

Chad Jackson was the most talented WR in his draft class, he didn't fail due to talent.

Here's Bill Walsh's first draft, what you'll find looking at his career drafts is he got one, sometimes two game changers a draft. Bill Belichick does about the same because that's about the best you can do, the glue guys make the difference. Nobody does it better... as good maybe, but not better.

Rd. Player
2 James Owens
3 Joe Montana HOF
5 Tom Seabron
5 Jerry Aldridge
6 Ruben Vaughan
7 Phil Francis
9 Steve Hamilton
10 Dwight Clark
10 Howard Ballage
11 Billy McBride

There was a RB taken a round prior to Montana, he was a bust. The only serviceable players here were Montana and Clark. Does Bill Walsh suck because of the busts or is he great due to his hits?

Here's Bill Walsh's 2nd draft class...

Rd. Player
1 Earl Cooper
1 Jim Stuckey
2 Keena Turner
3 Jim Miller
3 Craig Puki
4 Ricky Churchman
4 David Hodge
5 Ken Times
6 Herb Williams
8 Bobby Leopold
9 Dan Hartwig

Do any of these names jump off the page, can you recognize a single player?

Probably not because beyond Keena Turner, who became a role player, the entire draft class was a bust.

The notion that there is some GM out there who hits on all or the majority of their picks is horsesh-t. It doesn't happen, or maybe once in a blue moon.

Bill Walsh is considered The Godfather of the draft, the guy's methods are the ones most scouting programs are based off.

Thats a hypothetical conjecture. The point is. One team drafted him and kept him

And to answer the question, if Tom Brady went to one of the worst teams at that time like Arizona you never would have heard of him. If he was unlucky enough to play behind those horrid offensive line's he would have been shell shocked or paralyzed... what, is he fast or mobile all of a sudden? If he went to one of the better organizations he maybe would have won a ring... maybe two.

He was lucky to land in fertile soil in New England, Charlie Weis had rings on his fingers from the Giants and understood the system intimately. Tom grew into the superstar he became, he didn't exit college that way or he would have won the starting job at Michigan and been drafted much higher.

Mahomes was a great prospect, he's the best QB in the game because of Andy Reid. Reid had Alex Smith on the MVP doorstep and made Matt Moore look good last year, it's a TEAM sport.

Andrew Luck didn't fail because he lacked some X-factor, he got the living snot kicked out of him behind terrible O-Lines.

He's not perfect, but he's the best GM out there. He missed on Lamar Jackson big time.

Re-watching multiple Super Bowls during these days, and other key games, it's remarkable how many key plays are made by players other than Brady. Brady was the most important element of all these teams (except in 2001), but in every game there are super important plays made by other guys. Yes, Troy Brown, who was super-clutch, but also J. R. Redmond. Kevin Faulk.

Kyle Van Noy. Rodney Harrison. Trey Flowers. Chris Long. Edelman, obviously. Dont'A Hightower, obviously. But the list goes on and on and on. It's a team game. Belichick is great at putting together teams that win. They don't win every year. They win way way more often than any other team.

It's amazing. How he could do that while being such a terrible GM is even more amazing.

You were so close to a good post but the last sentence wrecked it. Josh McDaniels frankly sucks at drafting and he is the architect behind high pick Pats busts like Laurence Maroney, Chad Jackson, N'Keal Harry, and Sony Michel.

Josh may suck at drafting because he traded out of the first round then moved back up into the first round and took Tim Tebow. He has made no picks as a Patriot because BB is in charge.

Maroney was a good player until recurring shoulder injuries forced him avoid contact before eventually ending his career, he was a big reason 2007 was a dangerous offense.

N'Keal Harry assuming health and with a QB who doesn't have trust issues will be a much improved player this year.

Sony Michel has been a good player, he led the 2018 post season in rushing, TD's, YPC, and carried this team to a ring. The notion he is poor is garbage, the blocking in 2019 was atrocious.

Chad Jackson was a total F up as a person and player, he didn't care, he was happy to get his one contract and quit... he was the only true bust among this group.

He may have never gotten the opportunity. And if the opportunity can’t on a terrible team with a poor coaching staff, he may not have looked very good if he did get that shot.

Keena Turner was very good, not a role player. But otherwise great post.

the thing that stands out about Walsh’s drafting is that he made so many picks. Like bb he traded to acquire additional picks because in a game where the hit rate is low the guy with the most shots does best in the long run.

Yea you totally missed the part that these 4 whiffs are McDaniels' scouted and picked players. He's terrible at drafting.

The 25 worst draft picks in Ravens history: Kyle Boller, Dan Cody and a parade of wide receivers

I doubt very much that ravens fans nitpick Ozzie to death, despite a lot of misfires in the draft. Then again they also don't have the equivalent to the extreme Brady worshipers, who have sunk to new lows during the past 2-3 seasons, and offseasons, in defense of their God.

If defending the infallible Tommy Boy at all costs means that they must trash Belichick's success and aptitude as a GM, often with false assumptions, unrealistic expectations and fact-twisting, so be it. BB didn't do the seemingly impossible, creating a dynasty with a 20 year record of sustained excellence,
in the salary cap era, with unprecedented free agent movement, with teams regularly hiring away his coordinators, while consistently picking at the end of each round. It was all Brady.

Sony is a very good player.

N'Keal the jury is still out on because he was injured last year and their QB was disgruntled, I think he'll be very good this year assuming health, as will Sony again if blocking improves and he's healthy.

Maroney got injured, not sure how you predict that.

Chad Jackson was a bust, he had all the talent in the world and sucked anyway, didn't even show a hint of making it.

Josh McDaniels doesn't make draft picks, why are they his mistakes again when Bill has final say?

This is a ton of excuse making.

Yes BB has final say but he gives his assistants a ton of leeway to influence or give opinion
