Aaron Rodgers to retire next week? UPDATE: Not Retiring

Discount Double Dork...every single one of you that argued with me years ago about this narcissistic little Lord Fauntleroy and how you wanted him over Brady...every one of you need to superglue your mouths shut."did you SEE that pass he threw way down field as he jumped in the air on that broken play?? BRADY CAN'T DO THAT!!! Shut up Joker, Aaron is the NEW style taking over the league!!! Way better than Tom!!". You azzclowns know who you are. ES&FO

Basically Rodgers has engineered it that the Packers either trade him where he wants to go before the 2022 season, or he walks in 2023 and they get nothing. In that sense he "won" but...

This is a win for GB IMO. This is being spun as they conceded but they got Rodgers back for this year which was always the goal and gave him NO money. That is huge. They also voided the final year of his deal and saved money against the cap. They also agreed to just review things next off-season with the power to trade Rodgers if he still wants to go. This means they will get picks for him and perhaps a haul as Rodgers will be motivated to play well to get a mega deal from his new team. He will be turning 39 next year as well so perfect time to move to Love who will have another season to develop.

Honestly, this was a home run by GB mgmt.

It is weird/funny that Rodgers basically forced the Packers to set up a scenario that the Packers themselves should have wanted all along - not being committed long term to an aging diva quarterback with an ever-shifting set of grievances and demands.

All the Packers players refer to “changes” that must be made about “the way the Packers do things” with zero specifics. All just a dog and pony show for Rodgers.

I wonder who they'll blame this year for when he once again fails to get to a Super Bowl.

It wasn’t his fault in 2014 when his defense and special teams forced 5 turnovers and he could only put up 22 points.

It wasn’t his fault in 2015 when he could only put up 13 points until the final few seconds of the game before two fluke Hail Mary’s.

It wasn’t his fault in 2016 when he fell behind 31-0 before finally scoring in the 3rd quarter. Those garbage time touchdown passes of 1, 2, and 3 yards sure made his stat line look good though.

It wasn’t his fault in 2019 when he fell behind 27-0 before finally scoring in the 3rd quarter.

We all know about 2020.

It was great to watch the Rodgers crew on Twitter take on the cause of Chris Paul this year, declaring Paul has always been let down by his teammates, since they always try to warp the sports world to fit their narrative. In the end: same exact thing. A supremely talented player who plays so little in the biggest games.

Bedsore didn't teach Brady a damn thing you incredibly idiotic revisionist hysteric. I was THERE at camp every day WITH a press pass you absolute MORON. NOTHING...and I mean NO THING could be farther from the truth.
Prisoners dillema here.
I SO want to make a post that has Joker exploding and calling me a Moron, etc. but I also don't want Ian banning me. What to do?

Florio tries analysis, gets it wrong as he so often does:

...Once the restructured deal between the Packers and Rodgers becomes official, the Packers get their franchise quarterback. Rodgers gets (checks notes) the 2023 season of his current deal removed.

That’s it. That’s all he’s getting that he wasn’t already entitled to receive...

What did Aaron Rodgers really get from the Packers? - ProFootballTalk

What Florio missed is that it's not just the 2023 season that Rodgers got. It's also the elimination of the Ability of the Packers to use the Franchise tag. In other words, whether it's after this year or next, Rodgers is going to be in position to cash in on at least one more big deal, and to have options about where he plays, as long as his play doesn't go into the toilet. Had the Packers not caved, they'd have been able to control Rodgers on a year-to-year basis until after the 2025 season, which is the year Rodgers turns 43.

In 2018, they gave him a huuuuuge amount of cash upfront. I can’t find the thread from 2018, but I called it one of the worst contracts in NFL history. Why? He had no leverage, and the amount of front-loaded money set the table for another huge dispute. He received $147M in cash within six months of signing.

With two years remaining on his previous contract, according to multiple reports Rodgers will receive $67 million by the end of 2018 and more than $80 million by March next year

Now here we are. Green Bay gave up that much cash as a big risk. What did they get in return? If he’s still playing at a high level, they can choose to keep him and have him retire with the team and his salary is likely to be a bargain by then. EXCEPT that was never going to happen…the team has always given him over the top hero worship and kissed his ass. They spun the contract as a lifetime deal; it wasn’t. Now the deal has become a mockery.

I wish I could find that thread.

Imagine what will happen in GB if the Bucs and Brady beat GB and Rodgers in the playoffs again this year. Will he go full 'Favre-mode'?

I don't believe GB ever wanted him that long especially after this fiasco of an off-season with his non-stop drama. Remember he had tanked the final season with McCarthy to get him fired and then whined about LaFleur's system not giving him enough freedom at the line of scrimmage. This is what led them to drafting Love after LaFleur's first season.

They were planning on moving on from Rodgers either next year or the year after anyways which is why Rodgers was throwing such a hissing fit this off-season. He wanted to be able to pick his team like Brady did except Brady fulfilled his contract and became a UFA. Now Rodgers is stuck because he has to show up and play and play well this year so he can get traded to the team he wants with GBs blessing of course. If he doesn't, he probably ends up playing in 2022 as well and then after that he will be an UFA.

Honestly, this was played perfected by the GB FO. They got him back this year with NO money. They are actually saving map against the cap by voiding his final season. And then they get to have Love sit and learn for another season and then get a haul of draft picks for Rodgers in March. Win-Win-Win.

Whether or not they wanted him that long isn't relative to the issue I was discussing. However, in that vein, this new deal will make it much harder for the Packers to trade Rodgers to a place of the team's choosing, with full value coming back in return.

My money is on Rodgers not actually playing anywhere else. He'd like to win another Super Bowl, sure, for his legacy. The next best thing is blaming the Packers for the team's failures, which fans and the media have been willing to do, parroting a narrative that ignores the obvious counter argument. The worst case scenario is him going somewhere and failing, potentially avalanching his legacy.

This is is pretty similar to his problems as a QB; he's too risk-averse when the situation calls for risk, and he's okay settling for his consolation prize of being the victim of an incompetent squad.

Such a good point, your last sentence. Him caving here is just like when he did not run for the TD on third down in the NFCCG. He just likes the attention, the drama but he is fine to just go with the flow and make sure he blames everyone else.

It is very relative as if they wanted him all the way to age 42 then they just got hosed. But when they drafted Love, they told everyone they were ready to move on well before that point. That is what triggered this whole off-season fiasco with Rodgers. He hated that he signed a deal that basically gave GB the power to move him next year at very little cost to the org. They planned it that way. So of course they have no issue voiding the final season. They just wanted him for this year and potentially next.

The trade value will be completely dependent on how he plays this year. If he turtles like he did the final season with McCarthy then they are not getting a haul and on the flip he also probably ends up on a crappy team. It behooves him to play his tail off so he gets to go where he wants as if he has another great season, teams will give the Packers whatever they want for him just like they were prepared to do this off-season. But a verbal agreement is pretty much a joke. Several GMs have come out and said that today. GB can very well make him play next year too just like they have for this year.

It's not relevant. Read my post, and the article the post is about, again.

OT: Rodgers to retire next week?

No offense to you, but you having some "What if" thoughts doesn't mean that Florio's writeup was accurate.
